This is the third Nikon Digital Field Guide I've bought (the D300 was the first), and all of them have been great!

I bought a D5000 for my fiancé and the D5000 Digital Field Guide right along with it. When I bought my D300, I realized how helpful the books are to get you over the learning curve. Being a relative beginner to photography, my fiancé really appreciated this book and is taking some incredible pictures because of it.

One of the things I like about this series is that the author goes over all of the buttons and menus in fine detail, explaining exactly what each one does and gives examples of when you might need to use specific functions (and when NOT to use them). The user manual is so technical and hard to read; my fiancé uses this book exclusively.

A cool section of note is the Real World Applications section. With each type of photography, you get tips on how to get your photos to look professional, which is excellent for hobbyists and beginners.

I've been very happy with this series and highly recommend this book.

I am a Scout/Sniper serving in Afghanistan and I purchased this book along with my Nikon D5000 a few months ago. This guide has truly been a god send for me over here. I don't have access to any other resourses but thankfully this guide tells it all. Being a beginer to photography this guide breaks down all of the functions and buttons of the camera. It then progressivly teaches you how to use the camera in a crawl, walk, run fashion, from all of Nikons automatic settings to the manual settings. I knew pretty much zero about photography and with this book alone I have been able to figure it out on my own. The book doesn't stop with the camera it goes far beyond that. It includes full color pictures for reference and the author explains how he achieved most of the images included in the book. The guide also includes information on purchasing a wide variety of other products to complement your D5000. Tripods, speed lights, lenses, and many more products are included and explained in the pages of this excellent guide. Not only does J. Dennis Thomas teach you all about the D5000 he does it in a professional and interesting way. I would suggest this product to anyone who is planning or has purchased a D5000. It is the ultimate guide for this camera.

Being a middle school journalism teacher, I have to learn each new camera we get quickly so I can teach my students how to use it effectively. The Digital Field Guides are perfect for this.

The D5000 Digital Field Guide allowed me to learn the ins and outs as well as some cool tricks without having to spend months with the camera. This guide is easy to read and very informative. It's also quite compact so I can stick it in the camera bag in case anyone has a question while we're out on a photo excursion.

The author does a great job of getting right to the point while being informative as well. I love the Digital Field Guides, they take all of the work out of learning a new camera.

This review is for the Nikon D5000 Digital Field Guide. I received my copy in excellent condition and immediately began to read it. I was impressed with the layout and quality. By first appearance it is like a textbook you would see in school or college. The more you read it the more you see that the information has been carefully researched and thoroughly written. This book was designed to explain the basics of how to use the D5000 beyond your camera's manual and be something you take with you out in the field. This book accomplishes that and more. The book covers everything you could want to know about the D5000 and also has information on lighting and other topics in photography. This is handy for people new to photography and for refreshing the memory of old pros. As a photographer, I can say I highly recommend this book...whether you have a D5000 or you don't! After my experiance with this book, I plan to look into other books in the series! Easy to read and understand...what else could you want in a guide book?

The digital guide for the Nikon D5000 is the first photography book that I have ever bought. I am new to digital SLR's and I have found the digital guide very informative and the instructions easy to understand. I have learnt quite a lot about my Nikon D5000 in the one month that I have owned it thanks to the digital guide.
I have found the section on D-movie most interesting and communicated with the author seeking clarification about the right lens for video. The information that he generously provided helped me understand certain aspects of manual operation and will help me shoot good HD video.
I would recommend this book for any D5000 newbie. The book also has all the technical information about the camera for avid photographers.
I am very happy that I bought the Nikon D5000 digital field guide.

I have to agree with the reviewer of October 15, I also don't understand the praise of the first reviews here.
I bought this book because I am new to DSLR photography and realized that I need to understand how the camera works in order to be able to get the most out of it.
I was expecting to get a more practical, hands-on approach from this field-guide than I could get by reading the manual. Unfortunately this is not the case, this guide is nothing much more than the manual in color. Okay, there are also some general chapters on photography, but you can buy tons of other books dealing with these topics and this is not something which I need if I buy a guide to a specific camera. In some cases I even found the manual more helpful than this book.

This is a must have accessory for the Nikon D5000. It is a very user-friendly guide and helps one to understand the camera right out of the box.

This book is like a hot cup of coffee--you just cannot put it down, and because of the full color images you can read it with or without your camera for reference. It is wonderful to use as an accompaniment to the user's manual.

I'm always recommending it to my friends and classmates. I had my copy coil bound and plastic coated so I can use it in the field and the classroom. It fits nicely in my camera bag.

This was a great investment and addition to my photography library. Even if you don't have a D5000, the book is full of useful information that can be applied to any photography setting.

I have always been told I had an eye for photography, but never had the equipment to put it to the test. I recently decided to take the leap into a digital SLR. The Nikon D5000 seemed like the perfect fit for me and the package I purchased came with two dvd's and a Nikon photography class book, in addition to the Nikon standard manual. I also decided to purcahse a guide to help me learn the ins-and-outs of my new camera. Initially I was planning to buy the "dummies" guide, but when online i noticed the digital field guide. While the dvd's were informative, the digital field guide was the most valuable of all my learning tools, especially because i am able to take it with me in the field.

This guide goes everywhere my camera goes. I would suggest it to anyone with a Nikon D5000. The Nikon D5000 Field Guide is the best guide you can find for this camera.

once a canon user now a avid Nikon user, this handy little field guide is all you need! its chock full of great references and very easy to understand. great buy for anyone who wants to get familiar with the more technical side of the digital camera.
