5.0 out of 5 stars A must have
A great simple, straight to the point, easy to understand book covers all the basics. Although the camera comes with a printed manual (yes, actual paper and not electronic), this book does a great job covering all the basics and where to find them in your camera. It also discusses which settings are more important to play with and which can be left to run on Auto (the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version lacks color pictures and images
The paperback version of this book easily rates 5 stars. It is a great book that I've come to rely on.
The Kindle version is another story.

None of the color images from the paper edition are reproduced in color (loaded on my ipad and PC BTW). I find this odd for 3 reasons:

1-The little 'for dummies' tip icons and such are in color...

This review is from: Nikon D5000 For Dummies (Paperback)
A great simple, straight to the point, easy to understand book covers all the basics. Although the camera comes with a printed manual (yes, actual paper and not electronic), this book does a great job covering all the basics and where to find them in your camera. It also discusses which settings are more important to play with and which can be left to run on Auto (the camera has 1645 possible controls so this information is invaluable). Covers the basics for artistic creation as well. Between this book to learn to operate the camera and the Ken Rockwell site ([...]) is all you need to cover all the basics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dummy Book, March 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon D5000 For Dummies (Paperback)
I knew nothing about digital photography before buying a Nikon 5000 and this Dummy book has been a great help. It explains the camera in simple terms plus helped me learn how to transfer photos from the camera to my computer and even how to reduce the file's size so that I could email photos. It's well worth the money if you want to learn about the camera and digital photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect guide, July 26, 2010

Love this book - it give me the answers I need, quickly and in easy terms. I am just starting out as a "photographer" after using a point and shoot for about a year. The D5000 was a big jump and investment. This book is clear, easy to follow and has great tips from beginning to end. Just sit down with your camera, go through page by page and have patience. Beautiful shots are just around the corner...learning how to get 'em is easier than ever now.

I found the book to be very clear on what to do for a given situation. It also let's you know what you should not do. That at times can be better information...

5.0 out of 5 stars good intro to d5000 for newbies, June 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon D5000 For Dummies (Paperback)
I've been using a 35mm rangefinder film camera for over 40 years and finally bought my first digital camera (and first SLR), the Nikon D5000. I needed a book that would not make any assumptions about what I knew or didn't know. I bought King's Dummies book and Thomas's Field Guide. King's book is far superior: It lays out what you need to know in layers, beginning with the absolute basics, is well-organized, and never assumes that you know more about photography than you do. Thomas's book is poorly organized, the first half (on the D5000 in particular) is little more than a glorified user manual, with lists of what each button does but little or no explanation of why you'd want to use them, and the second half is a general intro to photography. Worse, Thomas's book is obviously a bad cut-and-paste from other books he's written, because it has false information about the D5000 (it has no LCD window on the top, for instance, though Thomas claims that it does).

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version lacks color pictures and images, April 26, 2011

The paperback version of this book easily rates 5 stars. It is a great book that I've come to rely on.
The Kindle version is another story.

None of the color images from the paper edition are reproduced in color (loaded on my ipad and PC BTW). I find this odd for 3 reasons:

1-The little 'for dummies' tip icons and such are in color.

2-This creates an enormous disconnect on any text dealing with color-related camera issues or techniques.

3-The Kindle version costs more than the print version.

So, instead of having this book as a handy reference on my ipad or PC, I still use the trusty paperback version.

This book has helped me to learn how to use my nikon camera. It's my first "real" camera and learning how to use it was confusing me. I wanted to learn how to use more than 1 or 2 functions and this book has made it easier to learn! I recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Concise, Great Primer for Beginner to Intermediate Digital Photographer, January 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon D5000 For Dummies (Paperback)
This is an excellent learning and reference guide for the Nikon D5000 owner. The content covers every aspect, and some nuances, of the Nikon D5000. Some basic understanding of photography helps with the syntax, however, Julie Adair King does an excellent job of keeping it simple for the average photo-hobbiest. When raising the level of "techno-speak" to clarify the capabilities of the D5000, she keeps the reader experience level relevant by suggesting or recommending respective D5000 feature settings based on her own experiences.

The overall format and layout of the subject matter makes it a great reference book. It is easy to find specific topics or subjects when referring back to refresh or to re-enforce learning. The print and color picture quality is also excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect book for beginners, November 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon D5000 For Dummies (Paperback)
I purchased this book after buying the Nikon d5000 kit with a 18-55mm lens. The book is giving a simple and well explained overview on how to use the camera best. It is also written for exactly this camera-lens-combination. But it not only shows you how to use the Nikon it also explains a lot of details around the camera, transferring pictures to the computer, what picture size to use,... A must have for every beginner!

At first glance of the owner's manual to this camera it can be overwhelming for the beginner photographer to grasp. This book breaks down a lot of the technical jargon from the owner's manual and makes it easier to understand. It is a must have if this is your first SLR camera!
