A broad review, useful to most,
This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
This will be a useful guide for all but the most technically proficient reader. It extends the Nikon User Guide with technical explanations, color photographs, an up-to-date coverage of lens/accessories, and general photography tips in the context of camera controls. Some coverage, such as concert photography and portrait posing, is weighted to the author's interests. I found it a useful review after reading the Nikon guide and using the camera for several months; there are lots of camera features to remember. And, the book is more up-to-date than the Nikon guide. The book would also be a better first read than the Nikon guide for someone technically minded who wants a broader balanced introduction. There are a few editing errors, but they are easily overlooked.

Good D700 tips & More,
By
This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
A well written explanation of the many functions of the camera. And serves as a good supplement to the Nikon Users Manual. In addition to the function explanations I found both the authors tips very useful and the additional general information about how the sensors work, lighting, and the authors tips on the various lenses worth the read.
I tried to put one of the tips to work and found the "how to" incomplete so I e-mailed the author and was quite surprised to get a prompt reply with the solution. Worth the initial read and I have referred back the the Field Guide more than I have to the Nikon users manual. Well worth the $$.

Good camera walk through and general photo considerations,
By Johan (Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
The first half of the book gives you a good walk through of the D700. The majority of the following half is more general photo oriented and could basically be read regardless of what Nikon camera you own. I did not expect about half the book to cover topics not specific to the D700, yet everything is worthwhile reading.
Being the first camera field guide I have read and not much to compare with, I can only recommend this book. It has a good overview of the camera features and it will definitely be handy in the future whenever there is a feature I want use but did not try out at first.

Great Guide for the D700,
By
This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
Now I'm not much for manuals but when it comes to cameras like the D700 you can't help but put your time in reading yours to really get the most out of your camera. The problem is the manual it comes with is just not user friendly and can be rather confusing. With the D700 Digital Field Guide you won't have this problem. The book is really awesome. Gives great clear advice on how you your D700 they way you want to but also offers the reasons behind why you might want to use a particular setting. For example, I found it very helpful when trying to figure out what color space I should set my camera to. Not only did it tell me all my options but explained which settings would be best for certain situation etc. I found this a very valuable book and would totally recommend it for anyone trying to get to know their camera!

Good - a bit basic,

Like all the other books in this series, the D700 Digital Field Guide is a good general overview of the camera, and explains the features well - but it is quite basic. This volume has a very good discussion of lenses, which is the book's forte -- few of the other current D700 manuals take the time to discuss the pros and cons of both Nikkor as well as 3rd party full-frame lenses as well as this. This is recommended, but you probably won't be referring back to it after an initial reading.

Wish there are more tips than just general knowledge,

This review is from: Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
I like the layout of this book, it provides a good overview of D700 as well as some additional knowledge about digital photography in general which is great. However, I am also looking for some in depth tips and recommendation about the practical use of the D700 (custom settings, pros and cons on different examples and settings), but found myself a bit disapponted about that. If you are looking for how D700 setting works, this is a good book for reference, but if you are looking for more practical examples, you may be a bit disappointed. I had to buy a Japanese professional photographer guides on the D700 as a supplemental (it also compare D700 settings to D3 and D300) from Taiwan and use along side with this book and got most of information I need about D700 this way.

Folks,
I added this to my photo book & guide library and found that it serves me better when kept in my camera bag. The Nikon D700 is complex, I am somewhat new to this type of camera & photography and need to have at my fingertips a quick, no nonsense field guide!! This is it and I believe the best one going for me. A must have, in the field for us wanta-bees needing help and guidance. Guide, "Well Done!" Good Shooting Folks :-) V/R KMW

Because there is no interaction it is impossible to teach everything in a book. That said, this is a very good start in understanding the 700. All the basics are covered. It is not rich in opinion which is good, but does does suggest the correct amount of alternatives. It is easy to read, well laid out and illustrated. It's a good book to start with, then use the camera.Use it for an initial reference, study & it will make you conversant.

I think that the book is great! I purchased the author's digital field guide for the D90 and found it very helpful. Purchasing this book was a no-brainer. I really like how the author basically makes the sense of a manual that is at times difficult and quite boring. There are pictures from cover to cover and lots of tips that go beyond the basic functions of the camera. Happy Reading!Nikon D700 Digital Field Guide

Better than the Nikon Manual,

While, perhaps, not as extensive as the manual, this is MUCH easier to read, refer to, and SEE illustrations, and more "real speak" than the official Nikon manual. I bought this (cheaply on Amazon) to determine if I really want to upgrade to the D700. As of now I do, but am awaiting the ?successor to the D700, still not announced nearly 18 months+ from the introduction of the D700. Today is 10-18-09. I certainly recommend this series of books to supplement, if not replace, the official manual. I also bought the book for the Nikon D200 after buying the camera. I also recommend any books on photography by Scott Kelby.
