I like the book and it is very good for a Nikon novice or for your first Nikon dSLR. I felt the book gives a very good overview, but I was not happy with the overall depth. Specifically, I had some trouble setting the camera to a single point focus with continuous tracking for shooting high school football. I had to read the section on tracking focus several times to finally figure out how to do it. It does provide a very good overview, however

Though I am not a novice photographer I have used many "Dummies" books for other topics (Programming for instance) and like the way they are laid out, and enjoy the style of the authors they choose. I fully enjoyed "Nikon D90 for Dummies" written by Julie Adair King, the author of this book. Her style is humorous without being campy, friendly but down to business.

I guess that's a good thing, because this book is in many ways, that same book. In fact many chapters are word for word the very same with a few small changes. Worse, the more advanced features that I purchased this new camera for are glossed over or simply not discussed at all. This is a beginners book, perhaps "my bad" for purchasing a dummies book for an advanced camera.

Here's my take: the 'Dummies' books lead you by the hand step by step through some very complicated subjects. This is a very good thing. But if you purchased an advanced camera like the D7100 you should be a more advanced photographer. If you need to be taken by the hand, then you probably purchased more camera than you needed or can make good use of.

In short, a fairly good book, easy to read, too simplistic for an advanced camera. You would be better served by another book.

Julie Adair King is an effective author in helping me through new photographic challenges. As an amateur enthusiast, I appreciate the help being expressed in simple terms. I can learn my new camera(s') capabilities without having to go for a post-graduate degree in optics, mechanics or the philosophy of image making.

I came to the Nikon D7100 from the Nikon D40x. This book has helped me to navigate the menus which are far more complex than those of the D40x. I am having a great time learning the functionality of my new camera with the help of this book. I highly recommend it.
