Review summary from DPReview

Nikon D5200 24.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR
DPReview Silver Award May 2013
Overall the D5200 is perfectly pleasant and capable little SLR, which is nice to use, delivers great results and offers a specification that wouldn't have looked out of place on a top-end SLR only a few years ago.

Conclusion

The Nikon D5200 is a solid performer that delivers excellent image quality and impressive high-ISO performance, along with an articulated screen and a control interface that's appropriate for users stepping up to a DSLR.

Reasons to buy

  • Excellent image quality in both JPEG and Raw files
  • 39-point AF array covers a good proportion of the scene
  • Good video features with microphone socket
  • Auto ISO selection can be linked to lens focal length

Things to consider

  • Slow AF in Live View and video modes
  • Movie quality a little disappointing (especially in 60i mode)
  • Limited aperture control in Live View and movie modes
  • Relatively small continuous shooting buffer

Suggested for

Users who demand the utmost in image detail at low ISO values and videographers who can make use of uncompressed video footage.

Not suggested for

Photographers who work primarily in live view and videographers who want high quality 60i output.

This camera had been superb so far. I've taken a couple hundred with the 18-55 mm kit lens and the quality is very good. Of course the point of a DSLR is interchangeable lens and after a week I went and bought the 55-200 mm zoom lens and now I'm having even now fun m the vari-angle LCD is also a plus on this plus the auto focus is great.

Love, love, love this camera. It takes amazing pictures and video. If you are an amateur photographer like I am and want a little more than the D3000 series has to offer but still want to shoot video (something the D7000 is lacking) then you can't do much better than this camera. I will recommend something above the kit lens along with this camera. The kit lens takes good pictures but I also bought the 50mm f1.8G and that lens with this camera takes great pictures.

So far, I think this is a fabulous camera for the price. I haven't had a chance to use it a great deal, but so far, I am very impressed and the battery life is very very good, which is a major improvement from the little cameras I've had in the past.

I have had this camera for a couple of months now, and I have really enjoyed using it. It makes learning manual mode a breeze as it shows you on screen exactly what the camera is doing (mostly useful for checking aperture settings), and the vari-angle LCD is helpful for shooting video or images from awkward angles (the only problem is that AF is incredibly slow in Live View mode). It works well in low-light conditions, and the 24.1 megapixels are really nice to have if you plan on doing any sort of cropping, blowing up, or printing of your images. I don't know a lot about how well it performs in auto mode or programmed auto mode, as I've only used it in aperture priority and manual modes, and manual mode is well worth learning to use if you are going to buy this camera. Having 39 AF points is wonderful, and the overall image quality is exactly what I have come to expect from Nikon (fantastic, that is). The display is handy and all the information you need is laid out nicely on the screen; the menu, however, is not altogether very easy to navigate, but it is not impossible to figure out nd if you are familiar with Nikon's menu layout (which is pretty much the same even on their point-and-shoot cameras, give and take a few things), then this really isn't a big deal.
It is a very lightweight camera, but it is worth noting that it might not hold up well if dropped, and it is not weather-sealed either, so taking it out in anything other than very light rain could potentially damage it, but this is not a total deal-breaker, especially not for beginners (like myself) just starting out in photography.I've heard a lot of people complain about the size of the grip; for me, it is not problem, but I have very small hands, and I can definitely see how this could be a problem for someone with larger hands.

I did a lot of research for this camera. Now that I have it I know I made the right choice. So light, yet packed with so many options for great photos.

It's a great camera for someone like myself that really wants to get into photography. Its a camera for beginners but want to get the hang of DSLR cameras. I have bin using it for the bast few weeks, and its incredible, the 24.1MP really shows. Must buy if your trying to get into photography, and want to keep it under $800.... great price, aslo the 18- 55m lens is amazing, going to upgrade soon, but its amazing. Works like a charm.

I love the camera but the charger for the batter just died. I've only used it for 2 months and now the dead charger has me wondering about the quality of the product I just got. I've tried checking into getting a factory replacement but keep hitting dead ends. I hope I can get this resolved be for XMas which is one of the reasons why I bought this 800 dollar camera. Now it's just a paper weight.
