I love this, but don't expect the same results you would get with a top of the line film scanner. You'll have to work a little harder yourself to get the light right. It works great with a light table, or overcast daylight. Sunlight works for dark negatives or slides. Just remember, the color of the light you use will make a difference in the copy. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nikon Slide Copy Adapter, February 1, 2001
This review is from: Nikon ES-E28 Slide Copy Adapter for Coolpix Cameras (Electronics)
The Slide Copy Adapter (ES-E28)is shaped like a 35mm lens, but slightly larger. One end screws onto the Coolpix lens (despite Amazon's Editorial Review, I do not require a step-down ring for my Coolpix 950), the other end is a frosted plastic sheet that allows light to pass thorugh. There's a slot in the side of the Adapter where you insert a plastic holder for slides or negatives. These come with the adapter.

Amazon and many other websites have shown a boxlike device in the past few months. I don't know what this box is, but it looks nothing like my slide copy adapter (note model # above).

Once you've inserted the slides in the holder, and put it the slide holder in the adapter, you crop the image as desired using zoom and press the shutter. The instructions come with prefered camera settings for best results. For best use, you need a light box to backlight the slide evenly. It may work outside, but I haven't tried that as it's a little cold in Chicago in February.

It works well, but I wish there were covers on each end for storage. The frosted plastic could easily scratch or break in a camera bag and the opposite end is open, which allows dirt inside the adapter after a time. I'm getting a cloth lens bag for mine.

If you get one of these, I'd recommend a AC Adapter also.

If you use this outside point the lens straight up toward the sky (away from the sun), find a white wall, or hang a white sheet, paper, or card to aim at, and be aware of where your shadow is falling, otherwise you may get some unwanted shadowy background, or muddied color in the copy. I use this with a Coolpix 950 and have had spectacular results with black and white copy negs and good results with both color negs and slides.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok....but, February 18, 2002

I bought this outfit with the hopes of copying slides and stills with my coolpix 995. I can say that it does a fair job if you get an even light behind the lens. If not...forget about it. Then I saw the quality of a coolpix scanner, scanned image. I am now saving for the scanner.
My advice is if you are looking for a easy cheap way to transfer negative and get decent quality this is the ticket.
If you on the otherhand are going to take the time to scan lots of your precious memories you may want to purchase a higher end scanner.

3.0 out of 5 stars DOESN"T WORK WITH ALL COOLPIX CAMERAS, October 13, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon ES-E28 Slide Copy Adapter for Coolpix Cameras (Electronics)
WARNING: The description above leads you to believe that this slide copy adapter works with all Nikon Coolpix cameras, although some will need an adapter ring. THIS IS NOT TRUE.
The slide copy adapter (ES_E28) works with the following Coolpix Cameras without an adapter - 4500, 995, 990 & 950
The Slide copy adapter will work with the following cameras if you also buy the adapter ring listed in parentheses - Coolpix 880 with (UR-E2 adapter ring) - The coolpix 4300 and 885 (with the UR-E4 adapter ring) - The Coolpix 5000 (with the UR-E6 adapter ring)

No other Coolpix camera will work with this Slide Copy Adapter. If you own the Coolpix SQ, S1, S2, S3, S4, L1, P1, P2, 100, 300, 600, 700, 775, 800, 900, 950, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2500, 3100, 3200, 3500, 3700, 4100, 4200, 4600, 4800, 5100, 5200, 5400, 5600, 5700, 5900, 7600, 7900, 8400, 8700, or 8800 DO NOT BUY THIS SLIDE COPY ADAPTER. It will not work, and there are no adapters that will allow you to use it with your camera.

Since I was required to rate the adapter i gave it 3 stars (average), but my rating doesn't count since I was never able to use it. (I don't know how well it works) However, my rating for Amazon would be 1 star on this listing because of the misleading description. I may be able to return the adapter, but I am out shipping costs - both ways - between CA and NY.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, June 16, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nikon ES-E28 Slide Copy Adapter for Coolpix Cameras (Electronics)
I've been trying to get good results with the Coolpix 5000, but with very limited success. The problem is the back light source -- and that the camera automatically zooms to 1.4x digital zoom. So, you start off with an iffy light source and the loss of image and resolution -- no thanks! It is also not exactly rugged material in construction, either.

If you do get this, the best light source seems to be a light box (which I don't have) or setting your computer monitor to a blank word processing page and adjusting the monitor's brightness. On the other hand, experimenting with various light sources (color and intensity) could create a whole new avenue for manipulating the results, but I'd rather do that in Photoshop, etc.

Bottom line: ok for fast and dirty, but forget it if you want high quality transfer from slide to digital. Save your money: get a print and scan it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fits the job, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Nikon ES-E28 Slide Copy Adapter for Coolpix Cameras (Electronics)
The slide adapter is exactly right for digitizing slides and film strips using the E995 camera. It just screws on the lens and you use the camera macro to take the pictures. You must use an external light source (not included). I prefer sunlight. The front of the adapter has a light diffuser which allows you to use any available light source.

The instructions help you with how to mechanically use the adapter, but you will need your camera manual to set up the camera.
