Focal Digital Camera Guides: Nikon D60

Just bought a Nikon D60 and looking to combine practical know-how with inspiration? This one-stop, easy-to-read guide covers all the basic functions of the camera, and everything beyond.

For the basics, turn to the quick start guide, which will get you up and running in five minutes.

For an understanding of your camera's many controls and features, check out the section called "The Camera." If all you need is a quick explanation, you'll find it. If you're looking for the Whole Story, you'll find that, too. Settings that affect how your pictures look are accompanied by full-color examples that show you exactly what you can expect. This section also covers the camera's menus, playback features, memory cards, and power sources.

The section called "Software" shows you how to get the most out of your camera's software. It covers downloading, editing your photos, RAW conversion, storing your images, managing your library, and backup strategies - to name just a few topics.

Ultimately, this book's greatest strength isn't its focus on the camera or the software; it's the detailed, easy-to-follow instruction it offers on using your camera to take truly superior photographs. Sections devoted to lenses, subject matter, and light cover these variables in depth, always presenting the most effective techniques in the context of the strengths and limitations of the Nikon D60.

Written by a widely acclaimed photographer and photography instructor, Nikon D60 shows you how to get the shots you can see in your head but have never been able to capture with a camera.

Editorial Reviews

Review

". he gets you going right away and, when you have a second, he gently explains what's going on, showing you how to do this or that. And Hilz doesn't shy away from the complexities, which he calls challenges. He simply points out some of the things to watch out for in a straightforward list. That makes the inevitable failures less frustrating and more intriguing. There is not a page of the book (apart from the chapter introductions) that doesn't have at least one full-color illustration (and the rule is several) to show you what Hilz is talking about. Every section is liberally sprinkled with tips in sidebars of their own in a very thorough introduction to modern dSLR photography." - The Imaging Resource Digital Photography newsletter, http://www.imaging-resource.com

"I thought this was a great book to introduce a person to the digital SLR. I liked how the book had the Visual Tour of the camera, Quick Start and How to get good images out of the camera in 5 minutes at the beginning of the book. It was all the information you needed without having to read the manual that comes with the camera, which is always more difficult to understand." -Yumiko Wilson, YWPhotography

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the intermediate, January 19, 2009
This review is from: Nikon D60 (Focal Digital Camera Guides) (Paperback)
I felt that this book was simply a rehashing of the manual. It was repetitive, and did not provide any insights into the camera which were not already easily found in the manual.
The chapters on Lighting and composition were short and sparse. I would have liked to see more detail on flash usage, lenses and idiosyncrasies unique to this camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than just an instructor's manual, August 6, 2008
By
Laura (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nikon D60 (Focal Digital Camera Guides) (Paperback)
I should probably start this off by saying I hate directions and instruction guides. I like to just figure things out on my own.

When I turned on my brand new Nikon D60, everything on the LCD menu was in Japanese. BUT when I went to the little booklet which came with the camera, it didn't say what to do when that happened. That's when I knew I was in trouble.

So I picked up this camera guide figuring it was just a glorified instruction booklet. I was shocked when I realized that it was really useful! It's not just about what each special feature does, but it explained simply and clearly when and why to use it. It made sense.

What really made me impressed with this book though, is that I had only gotten though a handful of pages before I had to run out the door to a friend's baby shower. I brought the camera with me and I found myself remembering the photography tricks and tips the book was talking about. I even started trying some of them out at the shower. At that point the only tips I had read were about what happens when you manually play with the aperture or the shutter speed, but it made an immediate difference in the quality of my photos.

I am thrilled that I bought this book and recommend it to anyone who just bought a D60 or wants to take better pictures now that they invested in one!

5.0 out of 5 stars everything I was looking for!, July 24, 2008
By
Caroline (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nikon D60 (Focal Digital Camera Guides) (Paperback)
I just got my Nikon camera and I was having trouble and confusion with some of the settings - this book was perfect! It showed me exactly what I needed to know. Not only did it help me with the technology, but the beautiful images really inspired me (check out the lighting and composition sections! They are awesome!).

I bought this book to learn how to use my camera and I ended up so enthusiastic about getting out there and using what I've learned that I spent hours last night shooting flowers and trees in my back yard. They were wet with rain, which was perfect for me after reading the section on inclement weather and how it can really be prime opportunity for a photographer to get some good shots (not to mention good diffused lighting).

I can now meneuver through my menus and deal with lenses and apertures with much more confidence and I have this great book to guide me should I forget.

If you have a Nikon D60 - you MUST get this book!
