5.0 out of 5 stars Great Hunting Rifle Scope, October 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
I needed a good hunting rifle scope for my 30-06 that I was taking on a mule deer hunt in Wyoming. Replaced a 4x Leopold. After a lot of research on line and in stores, decided on this Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40. Only wanted to spend about $150, but wanted the best scope that $150 could buy. The BDC (bullet drop compensator) was a bonus. Saved about $20 buying on Amazon.com with free delivery and no sales tax. What a difference it makes to have a good quality rifle scope to go along with my Nikon Monarch binoculars. Amazon.com is my favorite on-line store. Good selection, good service, easy returns, good quality and almost always free and quick delivery.

This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
I was tired of the iron sights on my RRA AR-15... ordered the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) and it arrived fast. Opened up the box, didn't look like anything too special right then and there. I took off the reticle, looked nice, sharp, clear indoor looking down my hallway.

After a day at the field, I have to tell you guys... it's absolute gold. The clarity is amazing, and it has excellent light gathering ability. This was especially evident in Washington's sporadic weather, cloudy one second then very bright and sunny the next. There wasn't even a hiccup, this scope makes everything easy.

The reticle is clear and precise. Long story short, right off the bat I was on paper in 2-shots at 100-yards. I was zero'ed on bullseye in 4 more. A total of 6-shots for zero, right out of the box, at 100 yards.

This scope is of very good quality... and thanks to it, my confidence in my own shooting ability has taken a big step up.

Cons:

- No scope rings included (not a big deal)
- Need a flathead screwdriver to adjust elev/windage (again, no bid deal)

Just a quick note for those mounting this on an AR-15. If you have an A2 front-sight post... you'll need a riser or high-mount rings for optimum results.

I'll be buying another for my other rifles.

5.0 out of 5 stars BDC is the ticket, November 20, 2009

This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
I am using this scope on a H&R Handi Rifle .444 cal. and I can assure anyone its the ticket to success. Whether you are a pro or beginner the BDC reticle will help. I am hitting 1" groups at 100 yds, & 3" groups at 200 yds. How can anybody expect anything better from a 22" barreled gun that will kick the snot of you. The scope performs exactly as advertised, No fog, good light transmission near dark, and a great price. Amazon proves to me time & time again that they are #1 for online ordering, quick delivery, efficient in every way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40mm, BDC, Matte, January 11, 2010

Wow! What a scope for the price. Great eye relief and clarity. I mounted this scope on my Savage 22-250 and added a 40mm 4" sun-shade. I sighted in at 200 yds and was on center with 4 shots. I use this scope mainly for hunting predators and love the BDC reticle. Using Hornady 55-grain V-Max bullets and my handloads, the reticle compensations match identically out to 600+ yards perfectly. My longest shot taken successfully was 658 yds on a "yote" and the POI was within 1"+/- of where I "guest-i-mated" the hold-over. I can't say enough about this scope. It equally compares to my Leupold VX-III in clarity, has quicker sight acquisition than the VX-III, and provides the same or better clarity in low light such as dawn and dusk hunting situations. If this scope is this great, I can only image what their "Monarch" series scopes are like. Wish the ProStaff came with options such as turrets and a mil-dot reticle [for them even LONGER shots]! Amazon price can't be beat plus the added bonus of FREE super-saver shipping!

This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
I can't believe how great of a scope this is for the money. An absolute Steal!! I have it mounted on my Tikka T3 Lite 30-06 and not only does it look great, it perfoms with the best of them. The Magnification and clarity are spectacular. I'm staying with prostaff for all of my future rifles. Aloha!

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good., January 10, 2011

This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
Took it to the range to sight it in. Mounted on my Remington 742 30-06. Started at 50 yds with the one-shot method. Then, handed it to my 11 year old grandson who has never fired a weapon of any type. After he fired, I gently explained to him that it looked like he missed the target completely, I could not find a hole. Moments later, I retrieved the target and found his hit at absolutely dead center, the last place I expected to see it. It was zero off on windage and 1 mm high on elevation. Amazing, we are framing the target paper. I then sighted it in at 100 yds on a rifle sled. After an off shot that was my error, I put three rounds in an 8/10" group, all at the point of impact I wanted.
I recall some reviews that commented on seeing screw heads in the barrel. I also saw this when I took it out of the box, but I was looking for it because of those comments. Not sure I would have noticed otherwise and when shooting a live round, did not see them at all. I'm very pleased with this product, but have not used the bdc feature yet. The clarity of view is excellent, even in low light. Never shot a Swarovsky so I can't compare, but I can compare $140 vs $1500. Just think, if after time you get tired of it, you can replace it 10 times and still save. Something to think about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Scope, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC) (Sports)
Great value for the money. Sharp image and good color transmission. Bullet drop compensation indicators easy to use and very intuitive. Hope it holds up under the recoil of hot .35 Whelen loads better than the previous (non-Nikon) scope did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great scope for the money, February 16, 2011

I bought this scope for my Remington 700 SPS tactical .308 rifle. I know one of the issues I had when purchasing his scope was there wasn't much information to help a new rifle owner like me figure out the best way to attach the scope to the rifle. You will need a scope mount, and scope mount rings. Mounting the scope onto the rifle was very easy. After a few trips to the range, I am impressed with the accuracy of the bullet drop compensator. We were able to accurately hit targets out to 400 yards without any issues. Going out to 500 and 600 yards took a little more practice for us first time long distance rifle shooters. By the end of our first day at the range we were hitting the 600 yard targets with relative ease thanks to this scope.

Pros
- Very clear field of view
- Easy to adjust magnification while sighted
- Bullet Drop Compensator was very accurate
- Great price

Cons
- You need a screw driver to make adjustments

Overall, if you are just doing some range shooting and don't need to quickly move from 100 yards to 1,000 yards this scope will be perfect for you.
