If you are a pro then you need more features than the sb400 can provide but for amateurs and beginners like myself the value is there. Spending $100 on a flash seems outrageous to me and most people I know so spending 2 times or even 3 times that was hard for me to swallow.

I'm glad I bought the kit because the diffuser really helps to lessen redeye indoors. You can also rotate the flash to bounce off the ceiling if the ceiling is low enough and bright enough. In other cases you should use the diffuser.

The battery back is a generic deal. They work and hold charge so its good enough for me.

I bought this little kit to work with my Nikon D40X. I was not really sure that I would notice much difference over the flash on the camera. I was big time wrong. The biggest asset of this flash is the bounce ability. I took pictures with the flash bounced and not bounced to compare - the bounced picture looked like natural light and filled in all the "corners" that are usually dark. Another asset is the fact that the flash contains its own batteries and doesn't pull off the camera battery. The flash cycles very quickly.

The batteries that are included with this kit seem to be pretty good so far. I put all four in the charger when I opened the package and I still have not run down the first two out of the charger a month and a half or so later.

The only thing I have run into is orientation of the bounce. If you are taking a picture of something "tall" and turn the camera sideways, the flash cannot be turned to the correct position to bounce. I guess you could make some sort of homemade reflector (as mentioned on [...] website) but it hasn't gotten to the point that I felt I needed to do so.

So, lets get down to brass tacks.
Would I buy this kit again? - Yes
Is it a small compact flash and does it have useful accessories? - Yes
Do I wish it could be pointed at the ceiling when the camera is turned sideways? - Yes

Fits my Nikon 40 perfectly and works excellent with it. Small, light weight and nicely built.
