Product Description

This is a new external flash unit that provides i-TTL flash operation in a compact and lightweight body at an affordable price. The SB-400 offers a guide number of 98.4 feet / 30m (ISO 200), and effortless bounce flash function. The SB-400 is a flash unit for entry-level digital SLR users, but it is also useful for D2 series digital camera users as a handy flash unit. The SB-400 has been developed to provide an entry-level external flash unit which is compatible with i-TTL flash operation. In combination with cameras compatible with Nikon Creative Lighting System the SB-400 is controlled in i-TTL and D40's M (manual) mode.Its flash head can be tilted in 4 steps, horizontal, 60, 75 and 90 degrees, and has a flash shooting distance range from 0.6m to 20m(depends on the ISO setting). Slow Sync, Red-eye Reduction and other flash modes can also be set on the camera body. With the SB-400, users can easily enjoy brighter and more natural lighting for better flash pictures.

It's rare that I love a product this much.

Note that if you want to bounce the flash off the ceiling, it's easy to do, but not obvious: the 1/4" white glassy part at the front actually flips up. I was actually going to return it before a friend pointed out how to turn that bit of the contraption up. (Dumb me!)

Most excellent product for Nikon cameras - get it!

SB400 is a good alternative to the pop-up flash on a digital camera. The mail reason would be to extend camera battery life (the flash runs on its own batteries). The flash also allows you to bounce the flash off a ceiling to avoid red-eye. If you can afford it the SB800 or 900 would be a better option.

Rechargeable batteries and the diffuser work great as well.

It is worth every penny!

If you are looking for a compact, yet powerful bounce flash for your Nikon then this is it!

you won't even realize that you are carrying a flash mounted on your camera as it just blends with the body and its not bulky, which was my number one criteria and it gives super results! I've been using this all the time for indoor photography and obviously bounce feature only but it is very flexible angle adjustment too and I'm fully satisfied with the results!
