A terrific recording of music by an overlooked genius.,

This review is from: Nikos Skalkottas: The Maiden and Death; Piano Concerto No. 1; Ouvertüre Concertante (Audio CD)
If you like 20th Century orchestral music, this undeservedly obscure composer may astonish and delight you. Although much of Skalkottas' music is atonal/serial, it is not icily cerebral; he does not sacrifice music to theory. (He broke with Schoenberg, with whom he studied in Berlin in the late 20s, over the issue of tone row orthodoxy). An excellent orchestrator, he also brought a sense of drama and lyricism to his music. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nikos Christodoulou turns out excellent performances of the three compositions on this CD. Geoffrey Douglas Madge handles the difficult solo part in the First Piano Concerto with great elan.
