Book Description

August 1, 1992 The Scarecrow area bibliography series
This book is the definitive bibliography of published literature on Egypt from the earliest times to 1918, published as monographs or as parts of collected travelers' tales. Limited to firsthand accounts of Egypt by travelers who actually visited there, it excludes pure guidebooks and books of strictly historical, anthropological, archaeological, or political interest. Works in all the European languages (including Cyrillic languages) are included, or works translated into those languages. With a map and a historical sketch of travel to Egypt.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...fills a real gap and is all the more valuable as it informs the reader about the contents of each book... (Bibliotheca Orientalis [Netherlands] )

...the real value of this kind of book must lie in its assiduous hunting out of the amateurs, second-raters and eccentrics...bemusingly comprehensive in its coverage of the early nineteenth century and first two decades of the twentieth century... (Times Literary Supplement )

A major contribution of this work is the comprehensive and very well organized bibliography--a useful work for both the specialist and the amateur. (Mesa Bulletin )

...will provide scholars, armchair travelers, and future visitors to the region with a well-organized source list and miniature travel history. (Arba )
