5.0 out of 5 stars Filling and delicious...
I've tried several of the Nile Spice soups and this one, just like the other ones, is a hearty, filling and delicious soup.

It makes a great fast lunch and has a simple list of ingredients.

Highly recommended!

Pureed and spiced black beans. Simple and uncomplicated, but seasoned well. Quick to make since there aren't big chunks to hydrate. Healthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't like soup but, August 22, 2010
This review is from: Nile Spice Black Bean Soup, Low Fat, 1.9-Ounce Cups (Pack of 12) (Grocery)
These make a great vegetarian chili. I wouldn't have bought these for myself, but received them from someone (they caused her indigestion). Even though I don't care for soup, I took them anyway.
After I add the water, I add uncooked TVP(textured vegetable protein) granules. The TVP soaks up the excess water to reveal a nutritious chili. I also add some tomato paste.
I suppose this reduces the instant-ness and portability, but it sure is darn good.
With the added TVP I get 15-16 grams of fiber and 20-24 grams of protein from only 260 or so calories.

I have been eating this Nile Spice soup and the Red Beans and Rice for lunch for a few years. What I like about this is it is fast, easy, filling, tons of fiber and although not organic it doesn't have a lot of crap in it.

My only complaint is the texture. I switched to this after eating Nutrisystem Black Bean Tortilla soup which was just too expensive to keep eating. Unlike the NS soup which has big hunks of bean, this is much smaller pieces so the texture is a little flat. IT also has peppers in it so for those who don't like them this isnt for you. Its not spicy though.

Still, I will continue to eat these. I suggest letting it sit in the hot water for a good 10 minutes to really soften everything up.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAST FOOD AND GOOD FOR YOU!, June 29, 2009
By
This review is from: Nile Spice Black Bean Soup, Low Fat, 1.9-Ounce Cups (Pack of 12) (Grocery)
I LOVE these soups. My favorite is the red beans and rice and the black bean. I find that it's a little better if the soup stands for 10 minutes not 5 but still that's faster then a drive-thru! The red beans and rice has 10 grams of protein and only 1 gram of fat and 170 calories! The other soups are similar in the calories and protein. I am a vegetarian and I and happy to find a high protein, low calorie, great tasting, fast food that doesn't break the bank. It is fantastic to take to work as the hot water spout in the coffee maker works. I eat at least one cup everyday!

I bought this because the reviews were so great and it's hard to find a decent soup these days, not in restaurants, not in cans, not pre-packaged, only home-made 5 hour soup seems to be decent and it did not used to be that way. I love it homemade, of anykind or hot coup but don't have the time to cook all day long for one pot of soup.

This is the BEST pre-packaged or any other (short of homemade) soup I've had. That being said - when you follow the directions and pour the water into the cup, it tastes like cardboard, like the cup itself is leeching into it or something. Before reviewing it badly, I made the next bowl in a mug and covered it with a plate. It was fabulous...once I added salt and pepper. This is my second complaint about the soup...the name is "Nile Spice" but except for the cardboard taste when prepared in the cup, it's not flavourful/spicy enough for me. It is a very bland soup but - with a bit of salt and a bit more of pepper, it's good enough to eat everyday - in a mug or bowl.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good--but needs more 'spice', February 22, 2009

With a name like "Nile Spice" I thought this soup would have a bit more kick than it does. Don't get me wrong, it's very tasty and also fairly filling, but it isn't really spicy at all. I've taken to adding to red pepper flakes to turn the heat up a bit, and that's made it a lot better. If you like your food spicy, this might not be the best soup choice unless like me you add some of your own seasoning.

I ordered the 12 pack from warehouse deals a few weeks ago. Of all the soups I ve tried-canned, dried etc., this one is the best. Its easy to make and full of spices. Best part is there's no meat. I m definitely planing on ordering again. Yummy!!!
