Beautiful songs, voice, and guitar,
By A Customer
This review is from: Acoustic Live (Audio CD)
Wow, I really liked this album. There are some beautiful songs (Black Books, Little On Up), and totally breathtaking guitar work (Keith Don't Go). After listening to samples and getting recommendations from those who already knew how amazing he was, I had to see what it was about. Now I wonder why I never thought Nils was the great talent that he is, maybe because his sound sort of gets lost in the E-street sound. But he is an excellent guitarist, great songwriter, he has it all -- Bruce is so lucky to have him and should definitely showcase his talent more. I'm just sad to know that he has never gotten the recognition he really deserves. But he continues to "shine silently" and his longtime fans are always loyal. Acoustic Live is well worth a listen!

I've been listening to music since the Beatle's early days, and love a lot of different things. My current C.D. collection numbers over 800 titles covering most genres. For whatever reason, I've never become familiar with Nils Lofgren's work, other than knowing he's been part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. I just discovered this recording after learning it was his song "Black Books" that was featured on a recent Sopranos episode. This C.D. simply blew me away, and is already one of my top 10 albums of all time. The selection of material, performances and recording quality are all impeccable. Buy this disc!!! You won't regret it.

A co-worker and friend of mine literally made me listen to this album about a year and a half ago. I had never heard of Nils Lofgren, but I figured what the hay? Immediately, from the first song 'You', I was hooked. The songwriting coupled with the amazing guitar playing and the great recording of this live performance all add up to creating one the better albums in music.I have given this album to my fiancee and also to my brother. He made his girlfriend listen to it. Needless to say, all four of us are now huge fans of this album, and are going to see Nils live in Alexandria VA at the beginning of September. Simply stated, I cannot recommend any album more than this one.

This album is just so great in every way. A master guitar player/singer songwriter at play. The recording quality is flawless. I play this album for people and they are like "who is this guy?!" "where did you find this?!" Nils was the secret behind Neil Youngs fame and he has so much surpassed Neil with age. This album is tireless and just gets better with every listen, so many albums get tired with repeated listens, this ones the opposite. Familiarity with Nils Live breeds fascination and total admiration! One of my desert island disks for sure. Yes he took a job as Bruce's 2nd guitar to pay the bills, but time has proven Nils to be the very best member of the E streeters, even Bruce knows this fact.

Nils Lofgren Live,

This CD has some great pieces of acoustic music. This guy is grossly under-rated but the music speaks volumes for his talent both instrumentally and vocally. Fantastic stuff. Not all the tracks are musically challenging but than again others border on classical.

Amazing acoustic guitar work. Nils is much more than a master of the guitar. The more I listen to this CD, the more I appreciate the artist that he is. Whether you are a fan of Nils Lofgren, a fan of guitar -- especially acoustic -- this is a great album to have in your cache.

If you like acoustic guitars then this is for you. There are three categories of people; guitar owners, guitar players and guitarists, and Nils definitely belongs to the last group. Also, the quality of the CD is superb. If you have never heard anything from Nils then this CD is a good starting point. A must!

... Bought this for the wrong reasons, and ashamed ....,

This review is from: Acoustic Live (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because of my "knowledge" of Lofgren's past: guitarist for the Boss and Neil Young, the "musician's musician" legacy, his solo work, etc., etc. ... somehow I completely neglected his songwriting talents. A part of me hopes this is the "Sleeper Album of the Year" -- some things are better stated when under the covers, and quietly. This album is one of them. "Unplugged" fans, run, don't walk to your record stores ...

Good not great,

I think poeple on this list are a little too eager to throw out a five star rating, granted they are all hardcore Lofgren fans so they are a little biased...A good album, a 3.5, not a 5...the lyrics are a little too sappy in most of the songs, which explains why he is relegated to sideman status, his lyrics aren't effective enough...but on the upside, and what makes this album worth purchasing, is the incredible musicianship. There are about 8 beautiful songs on this disc, notably "Blackbooks", "Some Must Dream" and "Little On Up"...some of the most amazing acoustic solos I have ever heard...the production is remarkably crisp and at times the music is breathtaking...but five stars is classic and this effort is a little too spotty to be put up there with albums of the stature of Sticky Fingers and the like...still worth buying...but don't be taken in by the unchecked enthusiasm of this crowd, if you do you will be sadly disappointed...
