Book Description

2010
The largest naval vessels in the world are the Nimitz-class super aircraft carriers. The Nimitz (CVN-68) launched the class when it was commissioned on 3 May 1975 and it has been followed by another 9 vessels. Each is more than 1,000 feet long, and displaces 103,000 tons at full load. Carriers are vital to the projection of US power around the globe: USS Nimitz responded to the Iran hostage crisis in the late 1970s, launched raids on Libya in the early 1980s and challenged China's growing navy in the Taiwan Straits in 1996. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first US warship to respond to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. USS Carl Vinson was the first to launch air attacks as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the mid-1990s USS Theodore Roosevelt supported NATO air strikes against Bosnian Serbs during fighting in former Yugoslavia. USS Abraham Lincoln backed up Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in the early 2000s. Illustrated with more than 300 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 80 pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Photo-Guide to America's Mightiest Warships!, October 12, 2011
This review is from: Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers - On Deck No. 6 (Paperback)
The ten ships that make up the Nimitz class of aircraft carriers are the largest and deadliest warships on the globe. Topping out at 103,000 tons, Nimitz and her sister ships like George H. W. Bush, Theodore Roosevelt, John Stennis, Abraham Lincoln and Carl Vinson have protected American interests since the lead ship was commissioned in May 1975. Jim Goodall surveys these naval behemoths in NIMITZ CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIERS ON DECK, a 2009 Squadron/Signal release.

Goodall offers up 80 pages of full-color photographs of the various Nimitz carriers, their crews and aircraft. Many of the pix were taken by official Navy or Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding photographers so the images are uniformly well-done. The 250-odd photographs range from majestic shots of the carriers plowing through seas to close-up views of sailors at their station.

I had expected a bow-to-stern approach but Goodall's book isn't quite that straightforward. After three pages of 'under-construction' pix, the book presents five pages of various CVNs under way followed by eight pages of flight deck scenes, six pages of 'carrier birds,' nine pages of superstructure close-ups, two pages of bow/stern in drydock photos, 18 pages of crewmen doing their thing, etc. It seems a bit of a mish-mash but maybe that's just me.

In any case, NIMITZ CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIERS ON DECK is a visual delight, featuring hundreds of first-rate and often striking images. It should prove to be catnip for carrier enthusiasts. Recommended.
