4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and exciting read!
This book was an excellent read. Undoubtedly the best of Robinson's works to date. He develops the story intelligently, carefully and with a lot of suspense, which contrasts somewhat with popular submarine novels from other authors, who tend to drown the story in techno-details and over-imaginative plots, and a lot of explosions! Through the story, we travel to some...

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining reading, August 3, 1999

I read this book after reading Kilo Class. Enjoyed the characters that I already had known from the author's second book. It was slow at times just as Kilo class but think it would be an entertaining movie if the ending was "spiced" up (see next paragraph).

The ending was somewhat un-climactic which was disappointing. Since I read Kilo class first which had a dull ending, I was hoping Nimitz class would have had more "fireworks" in the end. However, it was an interesting twist at the end, that the antagonist got away leaving me wondering if Ben Adnam would appear again.

The book is entertaining because: the plot is interesting; the characters have thier own grit if you use your imagination a bit; and makes you wonder if something like this could really happen.

I do not think this is a five star book. However, the people who gave the disertations on why it should get one or zero stars seem to have too much time on their hands and probably read way to much (there is such a thing).

Patrick Robinson does deserve some credit for his efforts. Remember that this book is only fiction, takes place in the near possible future and should not have to be totally historically and militarily correct.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and exciting read!, July 29, 2005
This book was an excellent read. Undoubtedly the best of Robinson's works to date. He develops the story intelligently, carefully and with a lot of suspense, which contrasts somewhat with popular submarine novels from other authors, who tend to drown the story in techno-details and over-imaginative plots, and a lot of explosions! Through the story, we travel to some fascinating locations and meet well-developed and diverse characters. I particularly enjoyed the playful banter between Morgan and Rankin, although Morgan's is somewhat overdone in places. I heartily recommend this book to anybody What's more, the sequel, Kilo Class, is just as entertaining!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super story for submarine fans, May 17, 2006
That was one of the best books I have read on modern submarine warfare and the story was also very good. The elimination of a US supercarrier by a single nuclear-tipped torpedo was presented in an exciting way, as was the hunting of the renegade submarine that followed. The episode of the British sub passing through the Bosporus Straights was absolutely marvellous and I wish Robinson had devoted some more pages to the hunting of the enemy sub, instead of discovering it by chance.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Author is LONGWINDED, but the story is good., September 27, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While I enjoyed the story, the author gets really long-winded at times, and sometimes talks for pages and pages about things that really have nothing to do with the story.

I enjoyed this storyline enough that I have started "Kilo Class", the second story in the series. I'm only 50 pages in, and it's great so far. There hasn't been the same droning on and on about things that don't concern the story(yet).

This book is worth reading, but just skip ahead 10 pages when the author starts to wander.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent edge of your seat thriller!, December 26, 1998

Nimitz Class is an excellent book that I found had some irrelevant components in the beginning, but 50 pages in, it is very good, and hard to put down. It truly is a great book to read during a long vacation that you have a lot of time to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story's okay, writing's not very good., March 17, 2002
By A Customer
I agree with some other readers, who point out weaknesses such as introducing us to the Navy pilot as if he's going to be a major character -- then killing him off. But there's no point in rehashing other people's points. My main criticism is that the author's not a very good writer of scenes. The dialogue between the joint chiefs and their advisors, the president, etc., just didn't seem very realistic. As to the reader who challenged critics of the book "why don't you try to write a book yourself" or words to that effect: just because I don't have the skill to be a good novelist doesn't mean I'm unqualified to recognize that others don't have the skill either.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book isabsolutely fantastic and thrilling., November 20, 1998

I like this book because it gives a very detailed analysis of the characters and best of all its plot is marvellous. It twists around the navy of the different countries. Most of the time it is action and nothing but action.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading, taut military suspense story!, July 16, 1998
By A Customer
Robinson knows how to tell a war story. In a tight, Clancy-esque style, he takes us inside the investigation of an impossible-to-sink vessel's sinking. His characters are strong and believable, as are the situations he puts them in. A really good read, especially for fans of the Clancy genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is good, June 20, 1998
By A Customer
This book was very well written and was a good thriller that kept me reading until I finished. There were two things about this book that could have been done better. First, the ending could be better, it seems if Robinson was rushing to finish the book, and didn't put as much energy into the ending as the rest of the book. Second was its similarities to the Hunt for Red October. However, the book was great, and I recommend it to anyone who likes military fiction

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Imaginative, June 10, 1998

I don't understand why people are being so hard on this book. It takes place in 2002, I think some things may have changed by then. People don't account for this and just put the book down. It may not be the best book I have read but it is sure as heck not the worst.
