In this collection of brilliant, bite-sized satiric tales, as painfully funny as they are brief, Keret covers a remarkable emotional and narrative terrain, confirming his status as both Israel’s bestselling young writer and new national conscience.

4.0 out of 5 stars
lovely short stories,
By dame ethel (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Nimrod Flip-Out (Paperback)
Etgar Keret's stories are surreal and exciting. They are mostly very short (4-6 pages). They tend to twist. And can be very moving. In some of his paragraphs, each sentence creates a subtly different emotion (for me at least). The themes are often dark. Other times (or at the same time) there is a innocence to them.
I find the stories in Nimrod Flip-out a little less easy to relate to than those in Keret's other English-language collection "the Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God and Other Stories". (Which is the reason this book doesn't quite get a 5-star rating.) But "Nimrod Flip-out" is definitely worth a read. My advice is to read the stories slowly, one or two a day. Otherwise they might tend to blend into one another. Nb: I have the Australian edition of Etgar Keret's "the Nimrod Flip-out" which was published in 2004 by Picador/ Pan McMillan. The stories in this collection have been translated from Hebrew by Miriam Shlesinger and Sondra Silverston. There may be some differences in the contents of these two editions, but from the reviews I have read of this UK edition, most of the stories seem to be the same.
