5.0 out of 5 stars Mordor meets Monty Python
"Nina Kimberly the Merciless" is a delightful high fantasy novel, packed with action, suspense ... and enough comedy to keep you giggling long after you finish the book. Author Christiana Ellis brings a sword-sharp wit to this work, and masterfully blends the best elements of the fantasy genre with humor, all packaged in a smartly-crafted tale. A must-read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, fun; probably not a classic
I've got to admit that I bought this book because the title amused me, which may be a first. On entering the text, I found myself a little confused as the settings were classic fantasy (pre-industrial, monarchial, sword, sorcery, etc.) but the social conventions, the language, and even the slang were very early 21st century. I finally accepted that this was what the...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Romp, May 15, 2009

I loved the podcast version of this book and am excited to see it out in print. It's gift time! Nina Kimberly breaks all the princess boundaries. She's sassy, adventurous, and won't take any guff from the dumb prince who thinks she's his babe. Very entertaining.

Nina Kimberly the Merciless is an exciting, clever and best of all, fun story to read. The characters have a richness and depth that is rare even in the most self-possessing story and you will find yourself cheering (and booing) as they make their ways through.

For all you ladies who have ever experienced a clod of a suitor or boyfriend or husband, you will have the chance to live vicariously through Nina. Not only does she experience the same problems you have, but she actually does something about it. A quality you will find amusing.

Nina is a truly different heroine and a joy to behold. Just ask her. Or else!

Treat yourself and pick up Nina Kimberly the Merciless.

Nina Kimberly is not your typical heroine, but her quirks and courage make her all the more lovable. This was a great podcast novel. Can't wait to see it in print.

Cannot wait to read it! I love Christiana Ellis' work! I've been listening to the new podcast and am super excited to read the book. Christiana has a sense of humor that is a welcome breath of fresh air! Nina Kimberley the Merciless has action, suspense, and a dragon's tale of humor. I like to think of Nina Kimberley as desert but with some vegetables secretly mixed it! Cannot wait to order it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercilessly Funny, May 15, 2009

She's a chick... and she's called "the Merciless." What's not to love? In the best traditions of Terry Pratchett, Christiana Ellis will have you laughing your way through this book. It takes the Fantasy Princess trope and completely turns it on its head, and--to borrow a term--mercilessly bashes them against a rock until they scream for... uh... mercy!

The story has heart though, as well. It's not a complete and total farce. This is a story that actually goes somewhere. It's smart, it's funny, and it's well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nina IS Merciless!!, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Nina Kimberly the Merciless (Paperback)
Christiana Ellis may have 365 "shallow thoughts" but not when it comes to "Nina Kimberly the Merciless"!! Her characters draw you in from the first chapter, and then you can't stop reading (well, at least it wont when I can buy this book!), or listening, as in the Podcast version of this book.

Number One book on my "give for a present" list.

In the same league as the masters. This blends epic high fantasy with the side-splitting humor of Douglas Adams or Monty Python. Highly recommended for fans of Tolkien, Adams, Buffy, or just good clean snark.

...they would write Nina Kimberly the Merciless. It's a book of adventure, romance, and a girl who makes her own destiny. Oh, and a really stupid prince. The characters are fun, well written, and Ellis tells an amazing story. Highly recommended for teens and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Story By A Wonderful Storyteller, May 15, 2009

If you are unfamiliar with Christiana Ellis, (I'm not sure how that can happen if you have an Internet connection,) Nina Kimberly the Merciless is a great introduction to the fabulous wit and delightful humor that she brings to everything she does.

If you are a guy, the protagonist of the story, Nina Kimberly, is at once everything you wanted and everything you feared in teenage girls growing up. If you are a woman, King Francis is...well...let's just say he *looks* good.

Throw in a quest, some magic, a dashing rouge, a dragon with a conscience, and a quirky wizard and this a a story worth reading.

That holds true even if you don't usually like that sort of thing.
