Biography

Nina Simone was born Eunice Wayman on February 21st 1933, in Tryon, South Carolina. She is, for many, the ultimate jazz/blues diva. Few know however, that Ms. Simone holds a doctorate in music, yet was once refused admission to the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, an event that has forever marked her life. An intense live performer, Nina Simone's shows are legendary, ... Read more in Amazon's Nina Simone Store

Editorial Reviews

That's a dark shade of blue Nina creates with the aching performances on this 1967 LP (her RCA debut): Do I Move You; Backlash Blues; Real Real; In the Dark; The House of the Rising Sun; My Man's Gone Now , and more. Includes two rare bonus cuts and a poignant foreword by Nina's daughter.

Arguably Nina Simone's finest album.

An absolutely revelatory album and highly recommended to those just getting into Nina's music.

I have many recordings of her and rate this one of my favorites.

I think the reviewers who are criticizing the short length of this CD are missing the point slightly. I know there are lots and lots of compilations of Nina Simone's work but this is NOT one of them. It is a reissue of her original 1967 album. If you want to hear passionate, raw and powerful blues songs in their original context as meant by Ms. Simone, this album is for you. If you are new to her and want to have the most bang for your buck (and who doesn't?), by all means skip this one and choose one of those many compilations.

Nina Simone sang many styles of music well, including soul and jazz, but to me, this is Nina at her best. She squeezes every drop of emotion from her voice. This is raw, passionate blues, and I think it's one of the more important albums of the 60's.

Some reviewers have complained that this album is too short. That's unfair, given that this is an original album. However, if you want a longer album, there is a compilation called "The Blues" that reproduces this original album with additional tracks. I'd recommend buying that CD instead.

Much as it was somewhat intimidating when first eyeballing the recorded catalogs of Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis when I was younger,a similar reaction occurred when eyeballing the breadth and scope of Nina Simone's music. At a time when the world of protest music was largely expressed through folk singers such as Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs,Nina Simone was one of the very few people to write and sing about the social concerns of the civil rights movement from an insiders perspective. Her distinctive musical style led the way for many generations of jazz and soul music, from the 70's funk era up to the socially aware end of the hip-hop/neo-soul scene today. Interestingly enough, she did all of this by being something of a creative non conformist. So this is the first Nina Simone album I ever put my hands on. And here's how I see it.

Conceptually this album is quite literal as she explores the blues. This is a genre she might have been mildly embarrassed about. Yet she understood it's true purpose to such a strong degree that "Do I Move You",her own composition that starts out the album in a manner that she has a full command of the form and authenticity of it's message. On "Day And Night",her own "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl","Buck" and the ballad "Since I Feel For You" she is throwing down some heavy soul with the likes of musicians Eric Gale and Bernard Purdie. Her lyrical and vocal expression reflect both personal and physical longing in almost equal measure. On "Backlash Blues" she's back to the 12 bar end of things. Co-written with Langston Hughes, this song realistically deals with the socio-economic inequities bought on from racism that, sadly we're still very much dealing with in the present day.

This is my introduction to Nina Simone. I heard "Do I Move You" in the 4th season sound track of The L word. I have heard of Nina Simone, but never really bothered to check her out, but I really liked "Do I Move You, " such a cool song, so I decided to buy this CD. It is awesome. I think is it a perfect intro to a great singer. Her voice is so distinct that it can never be copied, and her styling and phrasing is deep. "In the Dark" & "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl," are absolute gems, but the CD overall is excellent. My only complaint is the measly 38 minutes, I think there could have been more songs added, but other than that it's a good CD for starters.

Short on time. Just trying to offset a lone reviewer who gave this one star! Yes, this is a short album, but there's no filler. My favorite of Nina's albums.

I don't usually review music, but I was in my local indie music shop and this CD was on. From the moment I heard it, I was tapping my toes and fingers as I browsed the store. By the time I got up to the counter, I knew I had to have it. Fantastic voice, excellent songs, this is one of the best blues CDs I have heard, and plan to take a listen to more of her music. If you like blues, check this one out.

Arguably Nina Simone's finest album. I don't say that lightly b/c this woman hardly ever releases an album that she didn't invest an emotional interest in. When you take in Nina's considerable output in her almost 40-year career, "Sings the Blues" still stands out.

An eclectic artist hard to pin down stylistically, Nina Simone's wide appeal lies in not being able to "categorize" her music. Thank goodness she came along in an era when record companies were open to sign such artists. Imagine if Nina popped up in today's music scene. She'd be thrown into the musical dumpster with nary a second thought.

Now almost 50 years later, "Sings the Blues" still sounds remarkably current and invigorating. There's not a false note here. The intensity in Nina's voice and the freedom in which she and her band play out each song are nothing short of amazing. As a listener, you can feel in your gut the emotions this woman is pouring out. This is the album Nina had always been dying to make. By the time the last note is struck, the musical journey is comparable to being thrown into a tornado and coming out fresh and alive.

Nina Simone is one of the very few artists who stimulates ALL your senses --- and I mean eyes, ears, and other what nots. She sings about lust, passion, sex, revenge, and hate -- sometimes all within the time frame of the same song. In just over three or four minutes time, you feel like you've been on an emotional roller coaster with her (bumps and bruises and all). And she is not afraid to visit places or touch on topics where other singers fear to tread.

"Sings the Blues" is such an album. Nina makes other singers seem tame by venturing to places that are off limits.
