Nina Simone was born Eunice Wayman on February 21st 1933, in Tryon, South Carolina. She is, for many, the ultimate jazz/blues diva. Few know however, that Ms. Simone holds a doctorate in music, yet was once refused admission to the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, an event that has forever marked her life. An intense live performer, Nina Simone's shows are legendary, ... Read more in Amazon's Nina Simone Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Nina's first masterpiece January 13, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I had to buy this album because my father had it on vinyl. It is unique among her albums in that there are several purely instrumental pieces that my father adored. There are also a number of classics on here not on her ultimate collection or greatest hits. The introduction to "Little Girl Blue" is one of the most memorable and creative pieces of hers ever.

One of my most treasured albums.

3.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal music but sound stage is strange... March 14, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I know some critics will debate this, but I believe that this album showcases Nina Simone in her prime: young, healthy, and hitting notes that she would sometimes miss (not just blue, but way off key) in some later performances. The eleven songs from the original album are classics, and offer consistently strong material for her powerful, nuanced interpretations. "Little Girl Blue" is my personal favorite, but my second favorite is always whichever song Simone happens to be performing at the time.

But, as many times as I've enjoyed this CD, I have always struggled with the sound stage: Simone's voice is heard on the left side of the soundstage, while her piano is slightly to the right. If the purpose of this aspect of the digital remastering process was to separate her voice from her piano, allowing both to be heard more clearly, then this is a success. To be fair, this is not the distorted, compressed mess that occurs all too often when classic albums are digitally remastered; the tone is beautiful. But the Charly Records remaster does not center her vocals, and this makes it very difficult to visualize Simone sitting at her piano, unless she grew incredibly long arms for this album. I owned the original vinyl, and I know folks did some wacky things with stereo when it first came into use, but I don't recall this being an issue on the original recording.

Simone's performances on this CD are "five star", but the odd sound stage on this recording always bugs me: hence, my three star rating.
