3.0 out of 5 stars Very cute concept, but lacked on-screen chemistry for me
I had this dvd for a while and just watched it with my partner. We're both foodies and loved the theme of the film, but were disappointed with the lack of character and relationship development between the leads. I am not sure if anything was cut (we own the UK ed), but their relationship was just anti-climactic for us. I did enjoy the fact that the family was supportive...

It seems she has another challenge-facing her family and telling them what's really in her heart. Little does she know that they have already figured it out because electricity between Lisa and Nina leaves not doubt where Nina's heart lays. The intensity between Nina and Lisa is believable and the story is lighthearted and fun. I'm sure you'll find that you will want this film in your collection, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best date movie!, May 17, 2008
This review is from: Nina's Heavenly Delights (DVD)
This is definitely one of the best date movies that I've ever bought. There's no love scene but their first kissing scene surely makes up for it! The story is great and Nina's best friend is so funny. This movie is cute, cute and cute!

Being a huge collector of movies, I was impressed with this movie. Although I do not make a habit of purchasing movies unless I've seen them prior, I took a chance on this one and was happy I did. Sweet story line, I thought it did a great job in portraying a culture who is typically hush concerning matters of homosexuality with respect as well as open-mindedness. I enjoyed the music and plot and would definitely recommend this to others. Thank you! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A-may-zing!, October 8, 2008
This review is from: Nina's Heavenly Delights (DVD)
When I saw how few reviews were available for this movie I just had to write one. Just by chance, I had seen the trailer for this movie, and it looked so entertaining I just took a chance and bought it. It was the best movie I have purchased in a very long time (and I am very picky about my movies, especially the lesbian ones). You will enjoy this movie no matter what your lifestyle as there is a mix of comedy, exposure to Indian-Scottish culture and cuisine, and a very sexy on-screen chemistry between two gorgeous women. It's movies like this that make you wish for a sequel!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth your time! (spoiler-ish review), January 1, 2009

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a feel good movie that is visually appealing and the music is great. In fact, I liked the music so much I bought the soundtrack at Amazon.uk, the only place I could still find it. It's the story of Nina, a gal who ran off on her wedding day to avoid marrying a man handpicked by her parents, someone she didn't love. She returns for her father's funeral but also has hopes of fitting back into the family she left. She finds the family must sell the Indian restaurant her father poured his heart into but Nina fights to save it and finds herself starting to fall for her brother's girlfriend in the process. I'll let you find out the rest but it will leave you with a smile on your face at the end. It's worth adding to your lesbian dvd collection.

I am not sure if anything was cut (we own the UK ed), but their relationship was just anti-climactic for us. I did enjoy the fact that the family was supportive of the lead's love interest-a welcomed portrayal for the gay community, and surely the film was risky given the taboos associated with being gay, in the Indian community. Overall, the best sizzle for me, came from imagining the taste of the food. It had its moments, but it was underwhelming for me. I am glad, however, that more humorous and sweet gay themed romances are making it to dvd and film festivals.

I found Nina's Heavenly Delights to be an enjoyable fair. Rated against other lesbian film, I'd say it's great; but as just a film against all films, it's just cute and enjoyable. I did enjoy both the two primary actresses. The storyline centered around Indian food that looked and sounded great, making me crave curry dishes and my favorite San Francisco Indian food restaurant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, October 26, 2009

The movie was great, the romance between the two leads grows slowly and I love that in a movie because they take their time. A few scenes are just wonderful because of the passion and desire that can be seen.

3.0 out of 5 stars a fun movie when it isn't being cutesy, October 10, 2010

This review is from: Nina's Heavenly Delights (DVD)
"Nina's Heavenly Delights" is actually more interesting for the milieu in which it's set - a community of Indian ex-pats living and thriving in Scotland - than for the story it has to tell.

Nina (Shelley Conn) moved to London a few years back to escape an arranged marriage to a man she knew she could never learn to love. When her father dies unexpectedly, Nina returns to Glascow to help run the Indian restaurant he`s owned and operated for decades. Her partner in the endeavor is Lisa (Laura Fraser), a close friend of the family whom Nina finds herself falling in love with, a fact that may not sit too well with her traditionalist family.

"Nina's Heavenly Delights" is definitely a mixed-bag when it comes to virtues and flaws. It's at its best in its quieter, more serious moments, as Nina engages in thoughtful discussions with her family members and her new-found love interest. But when it aims for a more lighthearted tone, the movie tends towards the coy and the cloying. The coming-out aspects of the tale are handled with delicacy and restraint, though the determinedly upbeat ending is a trifle on the implausible and unconvincing side, to put it mildly. The movie also suffers from a surfeit of soulful montage sequences and irrelevant musical interludes, a holdover from its Bollywood roots, no doubt (the movie may be British in origin but its Indian influence is undeniable). Moreover, the blending of gourmet cooking with magical realism feels too reminiscent of "Like Water for Chocolate" for total comfort.

However, the performances are so authentic and the whole enterprise so well-meaning and upbeat that it's hard not to have positive feelings about the movie in the long run.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puts a smile on your face., January 26, 2012

If you are looking for a hot, steamy, bedroom action, look some where else. This is the type of movie that puts a smile on your face and makes you feel good. The two women fall for each other while preparing to enter a cook-off. The flaming queen friend was a riot. I know guys like him. The kiss scene was nice. I like movies where everyone seems to look like they're having a good time just acting. And this is one of those movies. Invite some friends over to watch with you, laugh and enjoy.
