5.0 out of 5 stars The 10th Choice: Buy This Book, October 24, 2010
This review is from: Nine Choices: Johnny Cash and American Culture (Paperback)
Silverman reads the complicated text of "Johnny Cash" with humor, love, and deep fascination. The author is curious why so many people from so many different backgrounds who like (and hate) so much music all love The Man In Black. Nine Choices is part biography, part cultural studies, and part Americana. It's a story about how a man--the perfect metaphor for the country he lives in--invents and reinvents his authentic self at every turn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash has far surpassed being another folk singer, he's become a legend of music, February 14, 2011
This review is from: Nine Choices: Johnny Cash and American Culture (Paperback)
Johnny Cash has far surpassed being another folk singer, he's become a legend of music. "Nine Choices: Johnny Cash and American Culture" traces the Man in Black's constant struggles through his career, a storm of rising mainstream success, his own personal demons, and the world that was rapidly changing faster than he could understand it. But through it all, his music and his thought allowed him to grasp his legendary status, and "Nine Choices" explores his legend thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Johnny Cash is a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction."... Kris Kristofferson, January 11, 2014
I found this book a very different and interesting read.I have read several books about Johnny Cash and June Carter, and found them all very interesting.I have been a Cash fan ever since he started in the music business in the early 50'sand still enjoy the many songs he recorded.I saw him in Montreal way back when he brought the Statlers with him as an opening act; and later on here in Toronto when June Carter and their son John accompanied him .It is an understatement to say that being a fan of the Cashes and the Carters has been full of surprises as well as enjoyment over the years.
Cash's music has varied greatly over the years, and his life experiences have been even more so.To say that he was a Legend,is also an understatement.
When I first heard Kristofferson describe him ,as he did in my title;I really believed he summed up Johnny Cash as well as anyone could, and he probably knew and understood Cash and his musuc as well any person.
This book is real different from anything else I've read that tries to explain Cash ,his music and why he was such an icon.
I would say that this is a very studious book,in that the author must have done a huge amount of research on all the things that have been written or recorded about Cash. There are 24 pages of notes detailing the sources of information the author must have gathered perused and/or read. This alone, must have been a monumental task, and then to use it all to write this book.I also had the feeling that the author had never met Cash, nor spent much time with family or musicians who worked with and knew Cash intimately. An awful lot has been recorded about Cash over the years, and if you have followed Cash as long as I have, there is not too much in this book that will be new or surprising to you.
What the author does is take all this information and sort it out into nine choices that Cash made in both his personal life and career that resulted in him having one of the most interesting careers in music;and why he was so popular with such a wide spectrum of musical interests.
Even if you've read a lot about Johnny Cash and June Carter;you should find this a very interesting attempt to explain them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn by doing!, October 28, 2013
This review is from: Nine Choices: Johnny Cash and American Culture (Paperback)
The content of this book is terrific and makes for great reading & learning. But the methodology is also really helpful. When I have students with strong interest in music, who want to do a project studying culture through a musical lens, I tell them to read this book by way of example.
