Book Description

Michael’s life was forever changed by the brutal murder of his wife. As the reality of her death registers, Michael feels a strange force at work inside of him. Seeing nine ominous doors in his mind, six of them burst open, he hears unfamiliar words whispered. Repeating those words, Michael finds himself, unwittingly avenging his wife by incinerating the killer.
Little did Michael know that the opening of those doors would also be the opening to a new world for him, one of magic and legend. Michael must journey to this other world to help defend the magic that is his birthright.
The magi of Kantwell, along with the human and dwarven races, a handful of elven guard, and the elite Avari warriors, now stand against the combined might of the trolls, ogres, and weres, under the ruthless leadership of the powerful wizard Mortow and the magi who follow him.
Will Michael’s unique magic be enough to save Kantwell and keep the races from falling into slavery or will Mortow be able to manipulate him to assure victory over all of Thelona?

3.0 out of 5 stars So much potential July 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
This was a decent book which could have been a great book with some editorial help.
It has fantastic world-building, the author has great imagination. There are a variety of sympathetic, believable characters. The storyline is interesting.
But it was difficult for me to get through the book because of the writing. New information is thrown at the reader relentlessly with no time to absorb it. Emotional moments are rushed over. The whole thing reads more like a draft for a novel than an actual novel. I hope the author takes a little more time on his subsequent books and realizes his potential.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! November 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Wonderful! In this book, you get a little bit of everything; weres, ogres, trolls, elves and magic. I totally loved the feel of this book. The characters were fantastic. Timothy Woods blends the modern day world with a parallel world of sorcerers and magic, with Michael, a moderate day man who ends up in another world where technology is forbidden, as it hampers the magic that flows in that world. Michael must learn a completely new way of life. He must learn the extent of his magic and how to control it, as he is the key to ending the war.

There are three or four story lines going on in this book, which all comes together nicely towards the end of the book. There is a quite a bit going on in this first book, but I did not find it difficulty to follow the story line. In fact, the more I read the more intrigued I became.

I am not a big fan of a lot long or prolonged history building in the beginning of a story, as I get bored with that type of thing, but I did not have that problem with this book. The only thing some may not like is the incredible cliffhanger at the end. I happen to be a great fan of cliffhangers and this book definitely delivers. Timothy Woods will leave you wanting more.

I give this book 4.5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining Read March 10, 2012
By JayC
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I started reading the book, I thought it was going to be tough going. The premise was good, the story interesting, but it definitely suffers from a few stylistic issues. Probably more my issues than the author's since I'm a little obsessive/compulsive about certain things. Nothing a good editor couldn't clean up. I thought maybe I would give it up, but then... man, it just sucks you in.

About 50 pages into it, the little things I had been noticing just sort of took a back seat to the story that was unfolding. I darn near couldn't put it down.

Worth every penny. I can't wait for the 2nd book to release and the author is definitely on my watch list for new releases. Great Job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where is Book 2? November 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The idea behind this book sounded interesting, and it was free, so I gave it a chance. I am so glad I did.

The story is captivating. It opens with a mysterious event, and slowly over the course of the book, the event is explained. But each answer raises more and more questions, keeping me reading, wondering what would happen next.

The setting for the book is well fleshed out. The races, and the relationship between them, were developed well enough. I am sure more will be revealed in later books, but this book is a good start.

And then there is the ending. With two huge cliffhangers. ARGH!!!! Why, why do authors like to torture their readers? :)

There is one negative, though. Although there are chapter breaks, there are no breaks when the scene changes within a chapter. This can cause confusion when suddenly different characters are speaking, or the first words said make no sense in the context of the old conversation. There are also many places where a characters comments will be continued on a new line, as if someone else had started speaking. Again, annoying, but not enough to be a detriment.

I was looking for a new book to read and my father suggested this one. I always loved the type of stories he read when I was a child, so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed at all. I was immediately drawn into the book, and thought my 14 yr old son would also enjoy it. We are both very pleased with the story. Great read for adults and teens.

The book is marginal, as other reviewers have said the dialogue is really bad, and there's way to much buildup and chatting, and less magic training and magical battles. Also i feel like the author didn't think some of the combat through, surely a few of these mages that can travel through the portal would smuggle in some modern weapons and use them to kill the super-fast warrior guy. Id give it 2.5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book ***SPOILERS*** April 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would agree with JayC from 3/10/12 that the first 50 or so pages have a certain style (or maybe lack thereof?) that didn't exactly suck me in but was still a decent read. Honestly, I'd give the first 30% or so of the book a 3.5 star rating while the last 70% would get a 5 star rating. I wish I could give 4 1/2 stars, but I rounded off to a total four stars overall.

I can't really put my finger on it but the first part of the book, I was very aware that I was reading a book. It's not until you get to Thelona that things really take off and from there on out, this is an awesome read. I couldn't put it down!

The characters that I really liked were Michael, Micah, Dain, Bran and the scout (name escapes me at the moment, but his horse's name is Fire). The character of Merric needs some fleshing out-as the Headmaster he seemed to me to be a bit of a generic Wizard type with no distinctive ambitions, hopes, dreams, etc of his own. I felt he was a bit of a blank slate beyond some one-off lines about being a widower, etc.

My only real concern at this point is that Michael has now become a sort of Superman vs. puny mortals superpowered juggernaut. I don't know what kind of real challenge the villain (Mortow) really would be for Michael. He (Michael) was able to wear out Merric during the testing phase of his personal shield and Merric and Mortow are roughly equal in power. There have been hints that Michael's real challenge will be himself-will he fall to the Dark Side kind of thing.

Judging from how the author handled the ending though, I trust that the second book is going to answer these questions and more. Looking forward to it immensely.
