Not "A lot like Robin Cook" thriller, as advertised,

This review is from: Nine Levels Down (Paperback)
I expected a medical technological thriller on the frontier of brain research and psychopathology. Spoiler Ahead - the research failed early on. No thrills there. It was a fakeout! The Doll House was nothing that exciting, multiplied many times over. I've read other novels using the subway tunnels under New York City before where the homeless live. It was basically a "damsel in distress" novel. On the positive side I must admit the very ending was unpredictable and I enjoyed it immensely. Like other reviewers have said, it was a fast and easy read and a somewhat interesting time-passer.

Worth a look, but nothing shocking,

This was a very fast, easy read, but not too thrilling or suspensefull. The first half was way too slow, but the ending was interesting, although predictable. A good book to read for fun and relaxation, but nothing very stimulating here.

I try to not let flashy book covers grab my attention, but sometimes they do and I'm glad this one did. I was bored and wanted to read something out of the blue so I gave Mr. Dantz' book a try. The reviews said that it was a fast read and you couldn't put it down. I would have to agree. What made it so fast was that the chapters were so short. It reminded me of Mr. Crichton's Jurassic Park (again, read it - the movie did it an injustice) Short chapters - make for quick reads, because as the reader you feel like you are accomplishing something and you tell yourself (or I do) okay the next chapter I'll go to sleep, but this book kept me turning the pages.I have to admit that the ending could have come a little sooner and I was getting a bit tired of the characters, but all in all I really enjoyed this book. My only regret is that Mr. Dantz' other work is out of print. I'd like to read more of his material if it was anything like "Nine Levels Down"

A Good Read. Really enjoyed the "bad guy". The cop is great also. The idea of the "city" under New York was great.

Evil has a name and it's Marlon,

Did you ever notice how stories, especially mystery stories are enhanced or even dependant on their setting? Victorian London for Holmes or the Navajo Reservation for Leaphorn and Chee? This story centers around all the underground tunnels and conduits of New York City. Unlike the detectives mentioned above, in this story, the bad guy has the intimate local knowlege. And boy is he bad!
