Grows on you like a Tumor...,

This review is from: The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (DVD)
On first veiwing, after having seen the first Fritz the Cat movie, you might feel like this maligned flick was put together while everyone was stoned, however, like fine art, it leaves something with you that brings you back to it again. and it seems to this reviewer that each time you come back to it, you discover another aspect of it,although not clearly definable, draws you back again....in fact, I'm going to watch it AGAIN right now....see ya!

Best animation of it's time!,

This cartoon plays on many topics that were ahead of it's time! Raw, uninhibited humor at it's best! R. Crumb knows how to take one story line, and play off of it time and time again. There are subtlties that make the movie understandable and enthusiastic. Once you realize, Fritz is day-dreaming on 9 lives, these lives are how he would've rather have lived and ultimately died than have been forced to marry his wife! The faucet dripping in his eyes time and time again, is him remembering how he slipped up and got his wife pregnant. Once you realize these connections...this movie is more enjoyable each time you watch it!

Ok picture.Of course---the visuial style is more like those auful pink panther shorts from the 60's than the original Fritz---but watcha gonna do? On funny part is the spoof on the old Gulf oil corp ('GOLF' gasoline) & strange things like Alice Cooper records floating though space and a tv with an tele-avangelist whacking people in the head in the name of Christ and LOTS of outdated racial gags. All N' All--a good picture

Oh come on! Why do people hate this sequel? Granted, yes it is not as good as the awesome original, but it's still a damn fine comedy and political satire. This is easily one of the most underrated animated films I've ever seen, and one of the most underrated film sequels as well.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's now the 1970's, and Fritz is now unhappily married with a son, unemployed, and constantly stoned. He and his wife constantly argue over him not getting a job and using the welfare money to buy marijuana, as well as the fact the only thing he taught his son to do is masturbate. So while he's stoned and his wife is yelling at him, he begins to have various visions of past lives he's had and other situations ranging from being an assistant to Hitler, the 1930's, to having sex with a Puerto Rican girl after they both get high, having an encounter with an apparently homosexual Satan in a sewer, to having to go to the Black House to deliver a message (This film deals with racial tension like its predecessor, only in this scenario black people have split from the United States to start their own nation), to being an astronaut, and many more weird situations. But you know what? It's offensive and very entertaining. MUSIC: Like the first film, the musical score fits it. While not as good as it's predecessor's music, it works just fine. ACTING: Skip Hinnant reprises his role as Fritz, but other than that I did not recognize any of the other voice actors. Most of them did a fine job and added to this film's colorful style, but there were some actors who did not perform as well and did little to add value. ACTION: As you can see, this film is not as offensive as its predecessor since it received an R-rating as opposed to the X-rated original. So that means less violence and less sexual content than the original. However, this is still a very dirty little film that still delivers the trademark offensive humor that the original gave us. It's also still a good political satire, though not as biting as the original's hard-edged style. This can be a bit slow at times since it seems to be more focused on stoner trips than an actual story in certain segments. The plot could have been more cohesive, because this film feels rough when transitioning between the story segments. However these are only minor flaws in a very entertaining film. COMEDY: This film, like its predecessor is more funny than most modern comedies I've seen. This film is still really funny and very offensive, and also doesn't care about politically-correct nonsense. If only we had more films that felt like that. OVERALL: Give this sequel a chance, people! It's actually pretty good, and while it can't compete with the original, it's still really entertaining and worth a look. Don't let children watch it, it's still not even close to appropriate. THE GOOD: It's funny, vulgar, has interesting premise, good voice-acting, good music, and it's good satire. THE BAD: The plot could use some cleaning up and some lackluster voice-acting.

And social insight to the 60's/70's. A bunch of funny, and quite crude and racially offensive cartoons, but still made with talent and good. Don't take it too seriously, though.
Heh, just would love to see the "Freak Brothers" animated, esp. "Fat Freddy's Cat"! Garfield should see it so he'd not give Jon so hard a time.

Of course, it's not as good as the first film, but Nine Lives is still funny and entertaining. The animation is a bit better than the first, and again Fritz is a really likeable character. Thank god for DVD and being able to see this again in it's full widescreen remastered glory. Get it now!

Depressing continuation of its forerunner,

This review is from: The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (DVD)
The problem is that the original Fritz the Cat told the story of the 60's through the adventures of its title character, and talked about the problems and personalities of our times. This film first fools you into thinking it's going to do the same for the 70's...but it doesn't.Like a reviewer before me said, there's no real plot. There's just different bits of Fritz's so-called lives, but they have very little to do with the modern era of America as some reviewers or synopsis writers have falsely said. Fritz goes back and forth between World War II, the depression, and even the future. Seeing a "New Africa" is all well and good, but no such place exists. This movie gives us plenty of a fantasy America but very little reality like the original "Fritz the Cat" did for the 60's generation. Those who say it's great animation for it's time have not seen the original Fritz the Cat. While the animation in that may have been poor, the animation in this is awful! It reminded me of "School House Rock." Neither did this film have the great film making style of Ralph Bakshi, since Mr. Bakshi didn't direct it. His replacement tries to outdo him...a little too much. During the 1940's section with Fritz we watch lights fly by a la "2001: A Space Odyssey"...in fact the lights go on forever. I had to fast forward that scene because it was seriously dragged out beyond my patience. This sequel could have done what it's predecessor did in revealing American society, but instead it gets caught up in the over-indulgence of the writers and director. I'm sure there's an excuse for how Hitler and his testicles greatly affected the 1970's in America...but I can't think of one. |
