5.0 out of 5 stars Be encouraged to set high goals, July 9, 2003
By
This review is from: Nine Lives: Stories of Women Business Owners Landing on Their Feet (Paperback)
This book really paints a picture of what it takes to own a business as a woman. It is encouraging to see that the struggles that these women went through were all worth it in the end. It has given me courage to never give up in busines and to set my goals high, despite the obstacles.

5.0 out of 5 stars We make our own luck!, July 9, 2003

This book underscored my belief that we make our on luck! I love the story about the owner of Rosies Bakery in Boston...how she worked through the night and went to bed with flour in her hair because she was too tired to even take a shower...now she owns a chain of bakeries! And the "Queen of Barbeque" who got tired of being passed over for promotions in her male dominated industry...she just quit and started her own business. I feel like these women are my sisters, and I'm proud of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars a business of one's own, October 22, 2003

As Marsha Firestone, current President of The Women Presidents' Organization writes in her Foreword: "Women in the past century have made magnificent strides...[t]he women in this book are magnificent...because of who they have become. These powerful stories...encourage each of us to seek our own new sense of self..."

I wholeheartedly agree. Each woman's story will resonate with any Reader's own struggles -- starting from childhood, learning how to be an adult, a wife, a mother, a business woman & then, inevitably, the descent into the pit & the crawling back out. In sharing their stories they offer their greatest lessons on how to survive & thrive in the business world.

Highly recommended by RebeccasReads.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Great Role Models!, July 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Nine Lives: Stories of Women Business Owners Landing on Their Feet (Paperback)
I was especially intrigued by the way that women who were raised in such difficult cirumstances could go on to own and run multimillion dollar businesses. Nikki, who came over as a teenager from Iran not even able to speak English; Adrian, who was raised in a deaf household; and Barbara, whose early childhood memories include having crosses burned on her front yard. It's amazing that these women were able to overcome these challenges to achieve the American Dream. What great role models...and what a great reading experience!

As a woman, I find it so important to hear of the success and hardships of other women. When you see what others have done, it makes you want to go out there and do it even better. this book does just that. It motivates you to move your dreams from whims to realities through reading the stories on these nine women business owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars management perspectives of these women different from men, July 1, 2003

NINE LIVES brings the stories of these women to life in a way that I can indentify with personally. Within NINE LIVES, I also noticed new perspectives on management than I've come across in books about male entrepreneurs. Specifically, the "Twenty Foot Rule" employed by Van Eure, owner of the world-famous Angus Barn restaurant. And the way that Rebecca Boegnik, the first woman ever to take a company public on NASDAQ, walks and talks the "value" of an employee.

Not long on concrete "how to" information this book should be seen as a motivational tool. It's a quick read but provides a view of personal success for women entrepreneurs that can be invaluable. I would recommend it to my own students as a companion to their business plan and financial literacy reading. It won't provide a road map for career success but for women and girls who need an infusion of hope it's worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars If They Can, So Can I, July 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Nine Lives: Stories of Women Business Owners Landing on Their Feet (Paperback)
This book has been an inspiration to me in many ways. It is so encouraging to read about women who have truly risen to the top. In a business world that is incredibly male-dominated, it is empowering to hear of these nine women, scattered all over the country, with amazing stories of success. I have entertained the idea of opening my own business, but rejected it, thinking that there were too many obstacles. Now, after reading this book, I realize that those women are not tht different from me. Instead of dreaming about opening a business, I am ready to get out there and do it!
