4.0 out of 5 stars Nine - Any Emcee who disagree?!, December 8, 2005
By Encise (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
The gravelly voiced Nine (so called because the number had a special and almost mysterious way of cropping up in his life) was a Funkmaster Flex protege revered by those who place an equal focus on the beats and production - in addition to lyrical dexterity of an emcees delivery. With a respectful nod towards the old school with a liberal peppering of MC Shan and Run DMC samples, Nine eschewed the grittier, harder edged street style, typical of New York emcees of the period.

Lead single "Watchuwant" with its jeep-riding video, its follow up, the Rakim-sampling "Any Emcee" and "The Cypha" are clearly the best cuts on the album. Overall, the album is well produced and because Nine never "blew up" commercially, the deleted CD is hard to find and commands a high second hand price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where the hell did he go?, June 25, 2005
By Effedup "Deuce" (Madison, WI) - See all my reviews
Man, I remember this CD was blowin up back in the day, then he all of a sudden fell off the face of the earth. It's a shame, too, because this was an awesome disc. I spent many days my sophmore year of high school dipping out at lunch and driving and smoking with friends with this cd playing at full volume, so these tracks bring back some great memories for me.

With a pre-DMX rasp to his voice, clever rhymes, and great music to boot, this CD was great. Standout tracks include "Whutcha Want?", "Redrum", and my personal favorite, "Fo'eva Blunted" (which I certainly was in my younger days). If you can find a copy of this, buy it right now...

4.0 out of 5 stars 90's hiphop ------> 3 & 3/4 stars, June 12, 2005
By LygerTail (SAN FRANCISCO) - See all my reviews
typical of alot of the production heard around this era. I wouldn't rate this album as a 5 star classic but for anyone who actually grew up listing to hiphop at this time (like myself and not some suburben kid listens to it after the fact) its a "classic" in the nostalgic sence of the word. I remember my homie and I listening to this CD smoking weed in his car trying to get our voice as raspy as Nine's. It never really got there but we had fun wasting much smoke trying :)
"Whatcha Want" was the single of the album that most will remember. I still remember the cheesy video of Nine driving around Time Square with some girl driving. Pretty gay by todays' standards but the music was different enough with the swaying violins in contrast to Nine's gritty voice to carve his own niche. "Red Rum" is decent, very slow tempo'd. "Ova Confident" is real nice, with horns and a KRS-One sampled hook.
"Fo'va BLunted" is koo' nice head nod stuff. anyway decent album worth a few bucks for a few tracks.
