I've owned this garbage can since March of 2010 and I absolutely love it. It is the only product, outside of something industrial, on the market today of its size and quality, and the price is absolutely unbeatable. The dual chambers work perfectly for separating trash and recyclables and the lid closes tightly to block in odors. The stainless is "fingerprint proof" so very low maintenance there.

It does require some care and attention, moreso than your standard plastic $5 trash can. It requires fresh batteries (changed about every 6 months) to keep it working well. Some reviews have complained about the sensor itself, but I have never had an issue with this problem. You do have to hold your debris within 6 inches of the sensor for it to open properly. Simply "waving" in front of the sensor doesn't work. With practice you get a sense of the timing. Another reviewer had issues with the plastic bags sticking out of the top; there are two rings that lock the bags in place and if you pull the plastic around the rings and gather it in properly (I have found drawstring bags work best for this) the plastic is neatly tucked inside the garbage can.

When emptying the can you do have to physically remove the entire lid and interior rings, so its a little more work than a standard can, but the benefits of having the dual chamber and not having to touch the can with messy hands far outweighs this slight inconvenience. Overall, especially at a price point under $100 this is an unbeatable deal and unique to the market. Other competitors have similar models, but none this is the largest with equal-sized containers, runs on batteries alone, and doesn't require any special bags or adapters.

Given the opportunity I would buy this product again and have purchased it as a gift for other family and friends. If you're needing a new system in your kitchen, go for it.

I read the positive and negative reviews. Honestly, I think those leaving negative feedback may have had unrealistic expectations. This receptacle is great. Was able to hide the trash bag edges easily on the first try - the trick is to pull the rings out, cinch the drawstring a little, and then tug on the inside of the bag before pushing the rings all the way back in. It's bigger than I thought it would be, after reading a bunch of reviews where it was smaller than the buyer thought. It's perfect - nice look, functional, and I don't think the novelty of having an automatic trash can will ever wear off. No problems using the touch free.

I had high hopes for this trash can, but am pretty unimpressed. The lid often does not open when you wave your hand in front of it, so I have to press the "open" button, while wet garbage drips onto the lid. Also, the lid does not close tightly (it just sits on top), so the smell of the trash escapes into the room.

I do like the concept of having trash and recycling, though, and I think the bins are large enough. It just needs to work better.

This is exactly what we were looking for. I use 13gal tall kitchen bags and they are just the right size. For two of us who cook at home just about every night and basically throw everything in this and a small can in the bathroom, it still holds enough to only have to empty once a week. It looks great, fits right under the counter and the lid doesn't hit it every time it opens like our old stainless canister. I've only had it a month so hoping the 4xD batteries last awhile... they are somewhat expensive. Overall great value compared to all the others I saw and thank GOODNESS I don't have to have two bins or that paper bag sitting next to my trash anymore!

Well, one month in and I am totally loving this can!!! I wish I had one years ago!!! I took the separator out as we have a large family and I cannot be happier with the size and how well the sensor works! I REALLY wish it had an electric plug, like some others, but I still love it!!

We were looking for a good size can that could hold the multiple pieces of garbage our familiy of 4 seems to accumulate (we entertain a lot too), without having to change the bag out twice a day. It comes with a divider (to separate recycling and trash) that can be easily removed to make a full 18.5 gallon can - awesome! The automatic touch is great for lifting the lid if your hands are full of trash! However, If you have small kids, make sure to turn off the automatic motion sensor switch, because they will have a ball just walking by to see it open and close :). My 15 year old daughter "played" with it for the first couple of hours and showed all her friends how it worked! It's a pretty can at a great price. I compared a lot and this by far was the best stainless steel deal for its size.

After a little over 2 months, the lid stopped opening more than an inch. I assumed it was the batteries, but new ones didn't help. Also, it got stuck in the open position.

Update: After looking around a bit, I found some info on the manufacturer's site - you have to remove the batteries and leave it off for 24 hours for the lid to reset. And like magic, it works fine now =)

Overall, now that I know how to get it to work again, it's awesome.

It loses a star for not including instructions to fix what appears to be a common problem.

I bought the larger 18.5 gallon can - 2 compartments. Most of the reviews are for the smaller units. This unit is bigger than I expected, I have to use 13 gallon trash bags - the only negative is that there aren't individual pails inside but the rings hold the bags in place with no problem (I just tucked the bags back over the ring and they do not show outside). I find the sensor is very good, not great - it also has an open button that works great. It would be 5 stars if it had individual pails but for the price I am completely happy - my husband is too. It has 2 compartments.

I loved this can at first. But now it is malfunctioning. I really love the design. It has two compartments, one for trash and the other for recyclables. Unfortunately, I must return the thing because it will not consistently open using the sensor or the "open" button. Very disappointed!

Overall I love the idea of a dual container to separate recycling and waste, however was a little disappointed with this model for two reasons:
1. The Sensor doesn't work too well, in haste I ignored others reviews on this, but realized without the sensor it is a pain to open. If this is the key selling feature, the company should make sure it works.
2. The lid doesn't do too good of a job hiding the excess garbage bag, and since it is approximately 9 gallons on each side, the there is extra plastic from the bag sticking out.
Overall good concept and gets rid of the awful bags laying on the floor with recycling, or open bins that attract bugs. But could use a few improvements, especially for being a $100 container.
