Book Description

October 1987
A year of destiny, when history took a sharp turn. The murders of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the Tet Offensive, barricades in Paris and Chicago and huge peace marches leading seemingly nowhere. A book for the '80s in the context of 1968.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

To Koning, novelist and activist, the radical promise that 1968 held was not the dawn of a New Age or social revolution. Rather, it was the realization by large sectors of the American people that our leaders and the mass media had consistently lied to us about U.S. motives abroad and exploitive conditions at home. For many, the author stresses, 1968the year of the Tet offensive, the siege of Chicago and the King and Kennedy assassinationsmarked a turn away from self-contemplation, toward a shared belief that collective aciton could make a difference. Koning, who was active in antiwar protests, writes from an insider's perspective as he re-creates the sense of urgency felt by many throughout 1968. This diary is a welcome antidote to the '60s-bashing that has overtaken the media.

From Library Journal

Koning, novelist and author of travel books, has written a personal memoir of the turbulent political and social events of 1968 from the perspective of someone who was both participant and observer of these events. A radical, Koning was present during the demonstrations at the Chicago Democratic Convention and the May Day student strikes in Paris. His work is not the standard chronological account of events, which may make it hard to follow for the reader not familiar with the events described. Still, though Koning's work jumps around so much it sometimes appears disjointed, it does offer a fresh view of many key events. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.
