Format: Paperback
The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) does a great job in profiling many good players from the 1800's (over 130 of them). Each page is devoted to a player, with a picture and a short biography of his life, as well as his statistics. This well-researched book pays tribute to the little known players of days long gone and gives us a picture of what baseball was like in the beginning.

This book specialize itself of presenting short but complete bios of 19th century players who were not inducted to the Hall Of Fame.

Some players such as Pete Browning well deserves to be enriched, but as they played mostly in the American Association, they still get the cold treatment. What a shame.

Many of the bios included are not available anywhere else. Do yourself a favor, read the stories and achievements of such forgotten baseball stars like Matt Kilroy, Louis Sockalexis, Toad Ramsey, Guy Hecker, Bobby Matthews, Davey Force, Levi Meyerle and so on.

It's a great document who'll enriched any baseball fans library.

Good bios on most of the early players not in the hall of fame. A couple glaring omissions were Cupid Childs and Lave Cross, and including the 19th century hall of famers in a separate section would be nice for comparisons. A brief timeline of major teams and rules changes would also be helpful to put their stats in context. Overall a great source of material on early ballplayers, hopefully it will continue to be updated periodically in the future. A key early reference book.
