Book Description

May 8, 2007 4 and up

Nini the cat is very, very worried. She loves her comfortable windowsill perch in her sunny home in the city. But the clues are clear: Nini's people are going away. Will they take her? Or will they leave her? And if they take her (and, oh, she hopes they do), will she like wherever it is they are going? Will it feel like home?

Anita Lobel's masterful picture book is for anyone who adores cats and for anyone who has ever moved to a new place. But most of all, it is for anyone who loves coming home.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—With few words and one gray-striped cat, Lobel addresses a universal and complex theme. Her pictorial description of the feline's home, outside and in, precedes the text; Nini faces outward, her engaging eyes directed toward readers. She surmises from the piles of clothes, equipment, toys, and books that her family is going away, and she attempts to find a perfect perch from which she won't be left behind. She is discovered and placed in a case, and meows herself to sleep. Nini dreams of glorious adventures until her case is unzipped and she is coaxed out into an unfamiliar, yet glorious, sun-dappled landscape. The story concludes with her finding another comfortable perch, again on a windowsill. The sun sets, the moon rises; Nini explores her new surroundings knowing that her family is close by. Lobel's vibrant watercolor and white gouache illustrations and her nod to Matisse's decorative motif, line, and color visually engage readers. Nini's curious eyes and playful gestures, and the warm embrace of the arms that hold her, convey emotions and comfort to those who are wary of being left behind.—Marian Creamer, Children's Literature Alive, Portland, OR

From Booklist

*Starred Review* "Oh no," thinks Nini the cat. "They are going away without me." Just a few words on each page tell the minimal story of a striped tabby who watches her owners pack for a big trip. But Nini isn't left behind. She is zipped into a carrier (the much-loathed "big black thing"), where she falls asleep and dreams of wild capers and then awakens to find that she's been brought to a beautiful countryside home, her people by her side. Although there is more situation than story here, the artwork makes this picture book an endearing delight. Irresistible Nini steals the show in full-page portraits painted with Lobel's usual sensitivity in watercolor and gouache. With just tiny modifications of lines and angles, Lobel coaxes distinct expressions out of Nini's whiskered face, from her accusatory glare when the suitcases appear to her alert contentment during her dreamed adventures to the shadow of a smile she wears when she discovers her new home. And with equal subtlety, Lobel captures a family's warmth and togetherness without ever showing a human face. In brilliant colors and beautifully arranged compositions of a family's detritus--clothes, bags, books, boots, golf clubs, and guitars--she finds sweet order and hints of messy, loving moments within the chaos. 5.0 out of 5 stars An adventure!, November 30, 2007
This review is from: Nini Here and There (Hardcover)
If you think cats don't know what is what, then you don't live with a cat. Nini knows her humans are going somewhere and she wants to go, not so much to go, as NOT to be left behind. She knows what goes--suitcase, a pile of shoes, a box of books, and a guitar--and perches on those one after the other as if to say: I want to go, too! No, not in the black thing (her travel bag). But in she goes!

Several pages later (and you must see those pages!) Nini is released in a beautiful country setting where she explores. That night she is brought in for her food and then perches on a window sill and enjoys the setting sun and rising moon. Nini is on a grand adventure.

I was confused the first time I read this. Not that the story is confusing--it isn't--I thought the humans were moving. The book flap explains that Anita Lobel and family live in New York City and spend the summer in Vermont. Nini is their cat. Oh, OK, Nini is having an adventure each summer, but needs reassuring about not being left behind. People are like that, too.

The watercolor and goache combination is simply gorgeous. The result is the transparency of watercolor with the opaqueness of goache, making the colors at once intense yet warm. Some of the pages are similar to Matisse's wild, vibrant artwork and worthy to be framed. The cat lover will smile at recognition at the ways of cats. This is a fine, fun, sweet book that will appeal to both children and adults. Highly recommended.

My two boys, ages four and five enjoy this book. They love when Nini sees the country. Great book. One of the best I've read in awhile!

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointed in advertising, October 19, 2011
This review is from: Nini Here and There (Hardcover)
Although ultimately this book was in decent condition, there was no mention of all the plastic and labels on it from being a library book. It took quite awhile to very carefully remove the plastic book cover which was glued to the book plus remove all the residual glue from library labels. I was planning to give it as a gift but it was not in good enough condition to do that. I ordered the other Nini books from other sellers and they were in much better condition. It would have been helpful if the condition of the book was described more accurately.
