5.0 out of 5 stars economy choice for today's ninja
As an entry-level ninja in today's weakened economy, I must watch my budget on equipment and supplies. I haven't yet qualified for health benefits, and the union for ninjas isn't the most effective, so I have little to back me up in case of a catastrophic injury. 2.0 out of 5 stars DOES NOT FOLD - Deceptive Product Title and Description, June 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
If possible, I would RATE THIS ITEM 2.5 STARS

1) This grappling hook does not fold. The title is deceptive and needs to be changed regardless of what the manufacture in China has decided to call the product. Folding means to bend, period. Hence, this grappling hook does not have tines that lay flat. Instead the grappling hook comes apart (see photo) for storage as shown on the back of the box (see photo) but never shared by the seller.

2) The twin hook forms on the shaft, once loose from a throw and hard landing, spin around on the main shaft, and do not securely lock into place when finger tighten. This leaves the hook in a non rigid form as the tines once loose from a throw, will also wiggle about some on the main shaft.

3) The tine hooks are not well formed such that the grappling hook when laid down, rest in a less safe position (see photo). For use and safety, grappling hooks in their resting position should have their pointed tines facing down or towards the ground. This grappling hook has been designed and made such that in it's natural resting position has the pointed tines dangerously facing up, and potentially hazardous to people when stowed. The solution would be to reposition the "center of gravity" for the grappling hook by making the center shaft longer.

4) As of June 2010, very low quality nylon rope is being supplied with the grappling hook. Note all of the miss weaves in the line (see photo).

Presuming that the seller is conscientious and aware of what they are promoting, had to have known that the title on the box is an incorrect description of the product and needs to be reworded to reflect the true design and function of this grappling hook. Since the seller, Martial Arts Land, via Amazon is not correcting the ad even thought the ad has been posted and displayed for as long as it has been, must be either indifferent or simply too lazy and disrespectful of their customers to permit such failure and inaction to continue.

For those reviewers that claim that this grappling hook folds must not own or have used the product.

Minus 1.0 for the grappling hook does not function as describe in the advertisement.
Minus 0.5 for the pointed tines on the grappling hook rest in an unsafe position.
Minus 0.25 for the hooks, after a hard landing, do not stay place, wiggle and spin.
Minus 0.25 for supplying with the grappling hook a low quality miss weaved rope.
Minus 0.25 for the seller not clearly stating that the product is miss labeled on the box.
Minus 0.25 for not sharing an image of the product box showing the hook disassembled not folded.

As an entry-level ninja in today's weakened economy, I must watch my budget on equipment and supplies. I haven't yet qualified for health benefits, and the union for ninjas isn't the most effective, so I have little to back me up in case of a catastrophic injury. Although most assume I have the REAL ultimate power from the outset, being an entry-level ninja is a long climb to the top. So, for the ninja on the go, this is the ideal item for the price-conscious ninja needing an effective grappling hook at a price-point that won't offend your sensei or your sensibility. Just last week, I was infiltrating the offices of a large, multi-national bank on a small assassination mission, and - wouldn't you know it? -my old hook just snapped in two as I hoisted myself up to the 17th floor. I nearly fell a rather devastating distance to the ground. I am so glad I had this hook at the ready as a backup! I was able to hoist myself back to safety after a quick throw (most of my free time is, in fact, spend flying with the aid of this hook). I will, of course, buy another, now that my backup hook is now my primary hook, although I think that next time I scale an office building, I'll take the elevator instead. Or I'll just totally flip out, and that would be sweet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful!, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
The manufacturer failed to mention that when you purchase this, you are automatically enrolled in the Hatano/Tokugawa clan war. I don't have time to deal with an honor dispute dating from feudal Japan, I have a job and things to do. I can't very well up and leave work because someone is trying to assassinate me. In all fainess though, I did not find myself at a disadvantage when I came apon dilemmas which could be overcome by a skillful application of rope climbing. Unfortunately this model doesn't hold up well to being submerged. I tried some deep-sea ascention, and now it just doesn't seem to work right anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Killed My Ninja Boyfriend, May 7, 2011
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
There I was. Snow blew gently past my face, stinging my cheeks and nose. A once green field stretched endless and white in front of me as the heaviest snow so far that winter blanketed the ground. Standing just across the field, I could see the shadowy form of my tormentor, my captor, my love. He was as cold as the katana that rested comfortingly in my hand. It had not always been that way. Once he had been kind. But now the very skills he had taught me, the ones we had learned together as our love grew, were the ones I would use to end his life.

The wait was not long. I heard his sandals crunching through the snow. It sounded like a symphony heralding his way toward death. He drew near. A tear slid down my cheek. I missed what we could have been. He was almost to me now. He would have his sword shoulder high, to bring it whistling toward my neck. But still I waited. It all grew still.

I knew his patterns. He knew mine. He would know of the hidden blade I kept nestled in my bun. He would remember the poison tipped needles in a special pocket on my obi. But what he didn't know was that I had purchased the functional ninja folding grappling hook (with black finish and rope) just days before on amazon. Secure in the knowledge that he couldn't know of my browser history, I steeled my nerves and lowered my head to wait.

I seized my moment. Unfolding the grappling hook in one smooth moment I swung it true along it's sturdy rope, bringing it to rest inside of my love. For a moment nothing happened. I was afraid that it hadn't worked as I'd hoped. Then I remembered the quality craftsmanship of this hook. He stared at me for a few seconds then gave a gentle smile. Falling forward the snow fluffed up around him, cradling him in an eternal embrace.

I allowed myself one more tear, then started away. I knew the snow would cover my darling. And that one day, I would buy a new hook. And love again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for surviving the zombie apocalypse!, March 28, 2009
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
Sturdy usable grappling hook that conveniently folds perfect for climbing the walls of large stone buildings such as a castle or an armory.

It can also double as a makeshift melee weapon, or very on top of a building you can use it to fish for zombies.

5.0 out of 5 stars NINJA!!!, January 25, 2010
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
This is a very fun item to have. The only problems i have had with it is the rope that it comes with is too hard to climb. i would suggest getting a longer rop and tying a knot about every foot or so on the rope.(depending on your reach with your arms and legs.) Other than that this is a great product, the hook stays locked in place very well and once you throw it where you need it it holds on tight! I would consider buying a second as a gift.

This item is amazing. I love it. I've used it for everything from gathering firewood from a dead tree with branches high out-of-reach to zip-lining.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, September 12, 2011
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
this is a great grappling hook and rope combo, if it bent or broke you didn't use it right. once assembled it easily unscrews just enough to fold flat for storage. be sure to tie the knot well too and screw it together tight and make sure at least 2 prongs are attached before you climb and it will be great. i tied knots every foot or so in the rope to use with tabi boots

4.0 out of 5 stars Feels weak, March 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ninja Folding Grappling Hook w/ Black Finish & Rope, Functional (Misc.)
First off, the Grappling hook works. But the rope is very slim and extremely difficult to grip if your not climbing a wall/tree. What worked best for me was to tie triple knots every 10-16 inches along the rope, so that you have something to grab as you climb. The rope is strong enough to hold me (90 lb. kid), which doesn't mean much, but it just feels weak when your yanking on it to see if it has grabbed something. But it does what I need it to do (climb walls, trees, etc.).
Another thing is the "folding part". The hooks have to basically screw down into position, making it possible for them to become unscrewed, or folded. This can be an issue when you think it's lodged onto a tree branch. What is supposed to keep the hooks down and in place is a small spring, which is kept in place by a small nut. The nut can come off very easy, which allows the spring to pop off, which is very difficult to find when lost on the ground. When the spring/nut are off, there is a high chance of the hooks becoming loose, making it harder to grapple something.
But despite those issues, it is a good product if you don't weigh very much. But a lot of other people said that they weighed about 185 and it broke for them.
It works for me.

Pros:
It works. (only one, but extremely important)

Cons:
Rope feels weak.
Doesn't truly fold.
Rope is very hard to grip/climb.
