5.0 out of 5 stars Ninjas in my pocket February 8, 2013

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The first time I fired up this game I thought to myself "Man this thing is playing super slow!" I was playing on a Gameboy Advance SP+ (because why wouldn't I?) but on a whim I decided to try the game out on my regular Gameboy and all of a sudden it clicked. The game was designed for that ancient doo doo LCD screen. If the game moved any faster it would be a blurry unplayable mess. That's when I discovered that when reviewing a game I should always run it on it's original hardware.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow is a fantastic bite sized action game. While at first it may feel a little slow, especially if being played on a Gameboy Color or Advance, it does pack some challenging action. The controls are responsive, the sword slicing action is satisfying and the bosses are fun to battle. If you're a fan of the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on the NES you will enjoy this game as well.

Also check out Shadow of the Ninja on the NES. Ninja Gaiden Shadow was originally being developed by Natsume as a sequel to Shadow of the Ninja but was reworked as a sequel to Ninja Gaiden.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice (but insanely brief) game... December 3, 2013

I'm a big fan of the Ninja Gaiden trilogy on the NES (except Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom which is technically impressive and completely disappointing in just about every other category) so it was only natural I'd check this out at some point. I was able to find a very nice copy for around twenty dollars which is fair considering this isn't the most common cart and I'll admit it's a very well done game that GameBoy/Ninja Gaiden fans should check out and add to their collection.

However, the fact that I completed Ninja Gaiden Shadow in a mere two hours - and this was my first time ever playing it - really made me question the investment. The game isn't nearly as difficult as the NES games (which is nice) but this is why the game can be finished so quickly. In a certain sense you can't really pick on Shadow for this too much since older games tend to be shorter... and it's a bit longer than Kirby's Dream Land which is AMAZING... but I can think of many other GameBoy games that are much less expensive that will give you more bang for your buck like the overlooked Donkey Kong Land games.

I can't say I feel cheated by Ninja Gaiden Shadow - although it would have been nice for it to have more of a story like the NES games - but if you're more conservative with the games you're purchasing (I'm so totally not that it makes my wallet cry...) you may want to pass over this title for something more robust... or wait until you come across a really good deal.
