modifications needed,
This review is from: 2pc Ninja Hand Claw Climbing Tigers Spikes (Misc.)
I'm not very happy with these. First off, they are, for obvious reasons, one solid piece of metal so they are not adjustable and the strap that is comes loose quickly. Secondly, being one piece of metal, this device WILL cut into the back of your hand. And finally, the most simple thing to fix, these are not sharp enough to actually secure yourself to a tree. I have the foot spikes with these and ill just burst your bubble now that these things aren't going to work unless you make major modifications to this stuff.

There cheap what do you expect?,

If you want to buy something that looks cool then get them. They are cheap so don't expect to be climbing 30 feet up a tree or trekking across a mountain. 1st off you don't use stuff like this for those types of actions anyways. If a ninja ever did use these to climb it was only a momentary pull because they help a little but they would have used good technique and not a hand claw to climb a wall or tree.
As for self-defense, the metal going all the way around the hand gives you a good area to fend of any sharp blades and if your good you can uses both hands and catch the blade with the spikes. Also the spikes may not be the sharpest but with a good scrape they will cut skin for sure and I'd wager that, that would be the main use of these devices. *Note: For those of you wanting to climb tree's. You ideally use your hands very little climbing anything except for balance and maneuvering, everything else is in your core and legs. So do a little research on climbing techniques before you accidentally hurt yourself because free falling from 20+ feet hurts bad. Trust me I have done it and you don't just get up.

the shuko are worthless. they claim to be sharp and they are far from that. the straps that come with them are to short can't adjust them. if you want to climb anything you will have to do some filing on them to get a point. don't waste your money on these. the plastic ones are sharper.

Ninja "Tiger Claw" Devises,
By Russell "The Shadow" (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews Firstly, yes- the metal band that makes up the body of the devise has the excrussiating ability to dig into the practitioner's hands- hence most often padding is required either on the practitioner's hands or wrapped atround the devise itself- I managed to get around the "digging" issue by using a set of "Reactor gloves" [remember, this was the late 70s to early 1980s]that had built in padding along the fingers and back of the hand... For combat tactics, it's best to remember that most tactical scenerios center around a person avoiding contact with the "enemy" [or bully or burgaler or mugger, et al...] and if one were to be wearing their "Tiger Claws" during an altercation with some ruffian or "enemy"- the slashing and tearing effect of the claws were simply as a diversionary and/or intimidation tool to keep thier attacker at bay long enough to effect a reliable escape. With the exception of slashing, the back of the devise [provided the wearer's hands were gloved as mentioned earlier] could be used as a cudgel or "sap" in lew of any other weapon that may have to be brought out of a pocket or storage during a fast altercation. Overall, an effective climbing devise [with obvious modification of either it or the wearer] but only a low to moderate close assault tool. If nothing else, they are a contemporized form of a tool from a by-gone era and an instumental learning example of the skill and strength that the Shadow Warrior of Iga and such provinces had to muster to survive their temultuous period of history

These things came to me in great condition. The only thing that I think is wrong with the claws is that they don't come very sharp, but I took a chizzle and scraped the tips for about 1 minute on each point and they were very sharp and very effective on climbing trees! Mainly what you need is a good pair of dirt biking gloves or some just regular winter gloves for the metal ring not to hurt your hands while climbing. That's what I use and it works great. I acknowledge you not to listen to the other reviews and make your own opinion. These things are a great pice of work and all it takes is a little bit of muscle!

good they work well although if you have no type of foot spikes or foot climbing wear the metal will dig into the back of your hands and will hurt and discourage any climbing

They work great!,

These worked a lot better than I initially expected them to. I expected that I would have to make all sorts of heavy modifications, but no, for the most part they worked right out of the box.
There is the problem of the metal "ring" digging into your hand while climbing. This can be alleviated with minimal padding. I'm personally a bit light so I didn't need all that much to keep it from bothering me. Pretty much a pair of gloved with a little foam sewn onto the back did the trick. Four stars because they work well without changing them, but I needed to buy some gloves to really use them. |
