A title like NINJAS vs VAMPIRES illicits immediate fear almost as much as the geek in me wants to indulge and say screw it, we're going to watch this anyways. The fear of being let-down is palpable... You hold the DVD in your hands, gawking at the premise and cringing as you pop it in to watch. You sit back, gazing at the snacks and beer that you know will bring you to a sufficient coma in anticipation of the suck-age... and... and... wait what!? This is pretty awesome!? I avoided the coma completely because NvV blew me away! I gambled and won and I'm SO glad that I took the risk!

Ninjas vs Vampires is a geek-horror/comedy unlike anything I've ever seen. I found myself laughing and cheering for these characters, and watched a movie shot on loose change ACTUALLY compete with the stuff Hollywood puts out. Ninjas vs Vampires won me over hands down! Is it low-budget? HELL YES, but it doesn't hurt the film in any way. I just couldn't stop laughing and when it was done, I was ready to watch it again. When's the last time a B-movie did that for you? The action was good, the acting was good, the story was FUN, the music was GREAT, and the women were hot! It wasn't exploitative, it didn't speak down to me as a viewer, and yet it gave me movie references to chuckle at throughout.

I haven't been this entertained since watching Buffy or Angel, and with THIS, I felt like the boys from Clerks stopped by to mingle in that universe with a sprinkling of Evil Dead.

I want a sequel... THERE, I said it! I want these guys to make a sequel, and I don't want it to be super-high budget either... these guys KNOW what they're doing and I want that formula repeated.

Buy this movie! Don't rent it, buy it! You'll watch this again, and you'll show it to your friends. The gobs of special features made it even better, and I STILL haven't gotten through it all.

Okay, at first, I had no idea what to expect from a movie like this. Obviously, it is a really low budget action/sci-fi horror flick, but oddly enough, is also marketed as a comedy, sometimes. I think that's sort of a "mock ourselves so others can't do it" sort of take on it, because other than the joking smart-alecky character Kyle, most of the movie is played seriously. While the film's title may be bad and most of the villains are atrocious actors, the overall plot itself is satisfactory enough, if not very original. It's not what story you tell, but how you tell it, and here, they do a good job of giving you a classic group of heroes sacrificing love and happiness for the greater good. Given a bigger budget, a better film title, and some better actors for the bad guys, this would actually be pretty darn good. But right now, it's okay, and you'll have to be open-minded to really appreciate it. Oh, and keep in mind, it's budget was a meager $15,000 according to IMDB. Or rather, 0.1% of an average Hollywood film's budget. I give them major credit for pulling off something this watchable with basically the change they found in their car.

While this is a low budget film, it is obvious the people who made it took great care to use their money wisely. The special effects are actually quite good, the acting is decent to inspired, the comedy elements are well-timed, and the fight scenes are actually darn good. I know the whole plot idea sounds silly, but it is done very well. Some of the acting does come off as a bit melodramatic, though still fun to watch. I wish all low budget films could be as much fun to watch as this one.
