5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Blast For All Ages!
I have been trying this game out for about a week now and it has exceeded my expectations. It takes a formula that has been proven to be a lot of fun (tower defense) and improved it.

First of all, they made sure that you do not just jump from level to level without purpose. There is a good amount of dialogue before each level which had me laughing out...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disturbing...but artistic
Only because one of the characters is a piece of excrement.

The game is rather artistic. Not too much "fun" to play for me but very great to watch. Just not my type of game. I'm sure others will like this very much. It just doesnt seem to have much playability.

I have been trying this game out for about a week now and it has exceeded my expectations. It takes a formula that has been proven to be a lot of fun (tower defense) and improved it.

First of all, they made sure that you do not just jump from level to level without purpose. There is a good amount of dialogue before each level which had me laughing out loud on several occasions. There is no way not to love these characters!

As for gameplay, it starts out very simple. You may wonder how it will hold your attention, but no worries there because there is something added to almost every level, either a new kind of ninja that you can use to fight Mr Demon's minions, a new enemy to face, or one of several other surprises.

Difficulty is not an issue for anyone from the casual gamer to the hardcore. Later in the game, as the levels get much harder, the casual gamer may rely on the easy mode (offered after you lose on a level twice) and the hardcore gamer has the challenge of going for an "A" which is the top grade you can get for stopping all of the enemy in their tracks. Although I had many "A" grades early on, I am mostly settling for a "D" now to get through the later levels. This will keep me coming back for more and more even after I beat the game.

Average level is about 10 minutes, good for gaming on the run as well.

As I already own Pixeljunk Monsters for the PS3, another tower defense game, I was not sure how much enjoyment I would get out of this particular version of the genre, but it did not let me down. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little DS game, November 17, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
Who doesn't love ninjas - Especially when they are decked out in footy pajamas? Ninjatown is a tower defense strategy game based on Shawnimals plush toys (if you don't know what they are, don't worry I didn't either before the game). Essentially the game involves you trying to defend Ninjatown from the invading Mr. Demon and his forces. You are asked to put up houses where various types of ninjas live each with their own unique abilities. In addition you can build huts that improve your ninjas' attributes (and sometimes other advantages).

The game is fun and addicting. The levels do get increasingly difficult and there are always new huts, ninjas, or enemies being introduced. Plus some of the cut scenes are truly funny. However, there are some minor drawbacks to the game. First, the game doesn't really "evolve" at all. You are essentially doing the same thing in stage 1 as you are in the last. Now don't get me wrong, what you are doing is fun (if you like tower defense types of games), but that's ALL there is here - no character development, no carryover weapons to the next level, no side quests or mini-games. Second, the story line isn't exactly deep. As some of the other reviews stated - young children can keep up with it. Again, not to say this is bad but if you want looking for a Final Fantasy deep story, I would look elsewhere.

Overall, I would definitely suggest buying Ninjatown. It's a perfect DS game for people of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son can't stop playing this..., November 15, 2008

This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
My six year old son has a new found love of ninjas thanks to Ninja Town. What was a Christmas gift became a surprise when he busted in on me opening my mail...but seeing how happy it makes him totally makes up for the gift surprise blown. He tells me the story line every day. He says it's difficult for him but he is six years old and he just loves a challenge. My teen daughter really enjoys it too. The joy on his face when he plays is enough for me. He says it's really cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun game, don't be turned off by the cuteness factor, November 24, 2008

I did not know what to expect from Ninjatown when I purchased it, just knew it was a tower defense game. Turns out the game is very fun.

The art style of the game is cartoony and cute, which is actually what attracted me to it. I know some people may look at the game and think it's for children, but don't be turned off by by the cuteness factor, the game is actually challenging.

The first few maps are easy and introduce you to the mechanics of the game and from there it ramps up the difficulty. I haven't finished the game and already have some trouble beating some of the maps, having to repeat them a couple of times. The game keeps track of your re-tries and asks you after a while if you would like to go to Easy mode. That's a nice feature to keep people from getting frustrated and let's you move on with the game, but it will automatically give you a grade E on the map, so if you are the kind that wants to finish the game with A's on every map don't go for it. There is a good variety of Ninja types you can use and the modifier buildings give some flexibility to your strategy. Master Ninja powers are also a nice addition.

The short cut scenes to advance the story are full of humor and a pleasure to watch, giving the game a lot of personality. Controls are good, the DS stylus is a perfect fit for this game. And it's also a very nice game to play on the go since each map can be beaten in 10-15min or less.

The pre-order gift was also good: a Ninjatown skin for the DS Lite. And the game comes with a small sticker of one of the Ninjas or their enemies. This is not a deal maker or breaker, but it's a plus in world where a lot of games come without even a decent printed manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, entertaining, and hilarious, November 17, 2008

Although a strategy game at heart, this game is unique enough that fans of the genre won't find it stale and those who aren't interested in the genre can still enjoy it.

The dialogue is hilarious! Along with the graphics and enviornments, it's as cute as can be. If you aren't at least laughing in your head there is something wrong. I won't spoil any of it, because it's worth waiting to read it for yourself!

The gameplay consists of placing ninja huts on empty lots which will produce two ninjas (typically) to defend the area around that hut. There are a variety of different ninjas, and there are other buildings you can build to enhance them. Essentially, the goal is to keep the waves of enemies (and there are literally separate waves of enemies that come at a time) from reaching their destination. You must strategically place your ninjas, spend your money on upgrades and new ninjas in the most effective manner, and use your special powers at the right time. You build a meter that can be used to unleash a variety of powers to aid you in defeating the enemy, which adds some interactivity to each level.

Ninjatown is great if you are a strategy fan or not. It's so fun watching those little ninjas beat up those enemies, and helping them out with your powers makes it even more exciting! You won't get bored, because you're always worried that some monster might slip by your defenses. You have to be on the ready to whip out your magnifying lens or lay down the ninja dropping medallion to poison the enemy! It just doesn't get any better than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to play, fun to play, adorable, good story line - Great Game, November 2, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
I've been playing this game since I received it 4 days ago and it has been an absolute blast. The characters are adorably hilarious and it is a game that is fun for everyone. The story line is expertly written with lots of humor and originality. The game evolves from level to level introducing new characters and challenges. So it does not become repetitive, a problem i have with a lot of games for me. You can play the multi player mode with only one cartridge, which is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Girlfriend Review, July 24, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
My normal involvement in video games is limited to watching my fiancé play them, or occasionally taking the player two role. That doesn't really work with a DS game. There are two things I look for in a DS game. I want a game that is fun but one that is also not too complicated. Ninjatown fulfills both of these requirements easily.

This was a gift from my brother-in-law. He knew I really enjoyed PixelJunk Monsters and he thought this game seemed just my style. He was right. The levels were straight-forward and the game difficulty progressed in a manner that was easy to follow. The game got more complicated, but never got so out of hand that I didn't feel like I was able to keep up. It utilized the DS features well, with special moves that had me blowing and screaming into the microphone. Some levels were easy to be, some took more a few tries. Overall, the game was a lot of fun. It was difficult enough to be challenging, but not frustrating.

The story is a basic good versus evil tale. You're a Ninja, Devils are coming to steal your cookie recipe. Cute enough for you? As stages are completed, the enemies develop new types of troops, but fear not! The call to arms to protect the cookie recipe means that more types of ninjas will join the battle as well! Muti-tasking, strategy and speed will all be necessary if you are going to save Ninja Town from all that is evil!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tower Defense on the Nintendo DS... with Ninjas!, June 29, 2009
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
The best way to review this game would be to ask you the reader: "Do you like tower defense games like 'Bloons Tower Defense' or 'Desktop Tower Defense'?" If you can answer yes to either of those games, then you WILL NOT be disappointed.

It's your job as the Ole Ninja Master to setup your ninjas in various locations on the map to stop the oncoming hordes of enemies. Your ninjas come in different styles and flavors, including fast-but-weaker ninjas, slow-but-stronger ninjas, fireball throwing, ice throwing, pick axe area-of-effect attacking styles... and more. By strategically upgrading your ninja huts to do more damage and predicting the strength of the next enemy wave, you can keep the baddies at bay. The game has enough levels to keep you interested, but with a little skill you can actually see the end of this fine game.

I simply cannot recommend this game enough. Tower defense at it's best for the superb point and click style of the Nintendo DS. A++++

Try it. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the DS' best, most overlooked titles., March 18, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
When I first saw screen shots of Ninjatown, it didn't look very good. The visuals looked cute and charming, but it didn't look like there was much to gameplay. As it turns out, there isn't. This is a simple tower defense game that's accessable to anyone, regardless of their experience with games, and provided that you like the genre even a little bit, you should have a heck of a time playing Ninjatown.

You control a bunch of ninjas, protecting their town from monsters who have invaded after a volcano erupted. There's not much to the plot, but you're treated to some fun cutscenes and plot developtment scenes with the Ol' Master Ninja. The writing is good, and I found myself laughing a few times when reading what everyone was saying. This is a game made by a gamer, for gamers and not some quick cash-in on the ninja fad that's been going on for a few years.

To play the game, you deploy huts that house different types of ninja. Regular ninja attack at a standard speed and deal standard damage, while Business ninja attack very quickly but don't deal as much damage. You have different kinds of close and long range ninja to use, and as you defeat enemies, cookies (the game's currency) are earned. Cookies are spent to upgrade huts and buy more. Also, as you defeat monsters, your happiness meter increases, and once full enough, you can call on the Ol' Master Ninja to help dish out some damage with a variety of attacks, like his trusty magnifying glass that he uses from a hot air balloon to fry monsters quickly.

Needless to say, the game can get a bit crazy at times. The first couple of levels have you doing standard things, but as you progress, different obstacles and enemy movements come in. Sometimes, monsters will try to get past the gate in boats while you're attacking other monsters on a bridge. So you'll have to use cannons to take them out while paying attention to what's going on elsewhere. Your ninja aren't invincible either- they take damage just like the enemies do. But instead of being defeated, they just rest for a few seconds to recover their HP, but they won't be able to do anything during this time. With the wide variety of ninja types, there's a lot of different ways you can compelte levels, and you'll have to use each type of ninja to complete a level in time. Don't be surprised if you find yourself constantly building and selling huts just to take out one wave of enemies because you bought too many of one type earlier in the mission.

Ninjatown also features a nice multiplayer game. You can both play using one copy of the game, which is how I played. I don't know if things are different if both people have their own games, but if it's the same, then the multiplayer mode leaves a bit to be desired. Don't get me wrong- it's fun since you both play the same level, trying to defeat enemy waves faster than your opponent. But you don't have access to all the ninja classes, and there are only a few levels to play in. It's fun, but I'd never play more than 4 games in one sitting because I'd get tired of seeing the same level and enemies.

Visually, the graphics are very simple and if it weren't for using the stylus to place huts and confirm options, this game could probably have been done on the GameBoy Advance. It still looks good, and there was only a little slowdown here and there. The soundtrack isn't very memorable aside from the main theme, and it seemed like only 5 or 6 tracks were played in the whole game.

For the price, you can do a lot worse than Ninjatown. It deserves all the praise and awards it got, and I'm glad to have played through it. It's definitely one of a kind, and if we're lucky, maybe a console version will come out with more options for multiplayer modes. It's got a good single player mode though, and will take you a couple of hours to get through everything, but probably longer because of trial and error. Give it a shot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost as addicting as Plants vs Zombies, June 4, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ninjatown (Video Game)
After wasting my time away playing Plants vs Zombies on computer, xbox, and DS, I was searching for a similar tower-defense game that would be equally addicting.

Ninjatown is the closest game I've found that you can quickly pick up and play, or waste away 8 hours of gaming. The story has plenty of nerd culture (OVER 9000?!), enough to actually make me read it once through.

The game can actually be quite challenging, I'd say moreso than PvZ. With PvZ, there was only minor map change between levels, and once you found a set-up that worked you merely needed to tweak your strategy towards different zombies. With Ninja Town, the map varies wildly and I often spent time re-starting levels in order to best decide where to place my ninja houses. I wasn't a huge fan of the pirate levels, nor the special abilities - I much prefer to utilize ninja defense rather than abuse a magnifying glass to fry my enemies manually.

All in all, it's an excellent game at a bargain price. Levels are graded, so if you find yourself coming up with C's and D's, you can replay each level at any time to try and become an A's and B's student. Replay value is moderate, once you've finished all the levels with A scores there's not much else to do. There is a multiplayer mode, but I haven't tried that since I'm the only one in my household with a DS.
