5.0 out of 5 stars Sinfonia Sopra una Canzone d'Amore!, March 8, 2005
This review is from: Nino Rota: La Strada, etc. (Audio CD)
Basically, the value of this disc revolves around the work the Sinfonia Sopra una Canzone d'Amore or Symphony on a Song of Love written in 1947 but not orchestrated until 1972. It is an absolutely gorgeous recording of one of Rota's finest works! This piece was taken from on two occassions for his film output: for the more lyrical passages in his theme for The Glass Mountain (1st movement) and 14 years later when Luchino Visconti was asking the composer for an already established romantic symphony for his film Il Gattopardo (3rd and 4th movements) but Rota began playing this piece and Visconti declared "that's the music!". The orchestration is more fully developed here. The other two works (La Strada Ballet Suite and Il Gattopardo Dances) on this cd are better captured on Riccardo Muti's earlier disc on Sony Classical.
