3.0 out of 5 stars Same thing
I have played Donkey Kong for a while now and I think it is an overall great game. The thing I disliked was that it was almost the exact same thing as Banjo and Kazooie. I mean Donkey Kong didn't have a dumb bird in his backpack but I think Rare kinda copied Banjo and Kazooie to save time in producing it. If you don't have Banjo and Kazooie, then buy Donkey Kong, but...

For what you're paying, you're getting a great deal. The color of the hardware is awesome, and game is even cooler. It never freezes, and the graphics are really high-quality. I highly recommend this package! Donkey Kong is such a cool game!

This game is great to play! A Player must have good common sense and memory to play this. It is full of hidden things to find and playing time can be hours on end & you will never run out of things to do. Not recommended for kids under 6. You must have patience to play because you will have to keep going back with each character to get all of the colored bananas and coins that are colored for each character. I recommend that you purchase the Donkey Kong 64 clue manuel because there are areas with clues that you will never find without some help. This game is overall worth the money to purchase. It is money well worth spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best deal in town!, October 10, 2000

First off, let's talk about the N64. The jungle green color is fantastic, especially in the sense that you can see through the N64 and see how the system and controller work. It even comes with an Expansion Pak and the system is not hard to install.

Now for the game. Donkey Kong 64 is phenomenal, and has pretty much revolutionized the platform concept. The game is HUGE with 201 Golden Bananas(I only have 189, it's that big), five Kongs, and several other items to collect. Each Kong also gets their own set of special moves and instruments. The graphics don't exactly live up to the hype because of the occasional slowdown and choppiness in my opinion. The levels don't start off very big either, Jungle Japes is ridiculously small(One of Chunky's bananas is simply found by throwing a rock) but they get bigger. Frantic factory shows the first major challenge with an extremely hard boss, Mad Jack. Gloomy Galleon shows great vastness with its large underwater areas. Fungi Forest is pretty much a very goofy level with mushrooms you can bounce on, a gaint clock tower, a skyscraper mushroom, a giant tree, and many old mills. Crystal Caves is a cold area and annoying at first because of the giant Kosha that knocks down slaclatites in a blatant attempt to kill your Kong. Creepy Castle is a confusing level with many twists and turns. The Kongs weapons are great, I am especially fond of DK's Coconut Shooter, which is one heavy packer. My favorite instrument is Diddy's Guitar which he plays better than some of these people with record deals! The game also has many special options which are unlocked by getting certain amounts of Banana Fairies with you camera. With 6 fairies, you can get the Enguarde and Rambi arenas...you get to become the animals and play special events that are much fun and a good break from the game. The 2-player mode isn't so hot but who plays the two player modes in a platformer? A great buy. Well worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfying purchase, December 27, 2000

I bought this system after a friend at work talked endlessly about how good DK64 is. Well, this combo set is the perfect way to get DK64 going really fast. It comes with the extra memory and the game so you can literally get the set and get going in no time. I had no trouble setting it up. The console's green color rocks! And the game is really fun. I have had the set for almost a year now, I play about 3 or 4 hours a week and the game continues to hold my attention. One of these days I will finish the game and have to worry about buying a second game, but I have not had that problem yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Deal...., January 1, 2000

I've got 10 thumbs and have trouble putting together 3 piece puzzles. That said, I had a bit of a problem getting the Nintendo hooked up since we have cable, a VCR and theatre surround sound coming out of our TV. I had to buy a special something to hook it up to where the cable hooks up. Other negatives are that you will probably want more than the Nintendo 64. Memory cards; controller cards; controllers; rumble paks; ect., ect.

Now the positive. Once it's set up with all the dodads you want, it's a really fun game. My daughter and have spent hours playing Zelda, Nascar, Fight Kings, Pokeman Snap, Donkey Kong & Mario Carts. And we've only had it a week. I've found it a terrific way to play with my teenager and her friends and let them know the old man is pretty cool sometimes. Don't tell her that I get up in the middle of the night to practice!

This review is from: Nintendo 64 System - Video Game Console - Donkey Kong Bundle (Video Game)
In my opinion in this bundle you get the best Nintendo system ever and the best Nintendo game ever. This review I'm writing will discuss each item separately in more detail.

Nintendo 64 -

The Nintendo 64 made some of the best games that are now classics. (For example; Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 to name a few) The best colored console (to me) is the Jungle Green console because it's translucent which makes it pleasant to look at.

The Nintendo 64's controllers are excellent as well. They have a firm grip and are more comfortable than the Nintendo GameCube's. The only problem is that the joysticks wear out quite easily so you have to buy new ones constantly. (Especially if you play Mario games.)

An annoying problem for the Nintendo 64 were that in the earlier days of the arrival of the Nintendo 64 you would need to purchase controller packs to save your games, fortunately later on they made it possible to save your game without a controller pack. Also, the rumble pack feature was annoying to. You would have to buy a rumble pack (if you want to feel vibrations during your game) which added to the weight of the controller. (They solved that problem when Nintendo made the GameCube`s rumble feature built into the controller.)

The graphics of the Nintendo 64 system are quite good. Nothing compared to nowadays standards of what good graphics are but I think the quality of the games is what matters most in a console. And this console lives up to those standards.

Also, this console is very durable. Yes it's a bit bulky but it's worth it. I have on accidentally knocked it off the top of tables tripped over wires (That's a pain) and hit it when I'm on a tough level of a game but hey... it's still in one piece. You also don't have to worry about console problems like the red ring of death, a technical problem on the Xbox 360. (I'm pretty sure most people know about that but if you don't I can explain it.)

Well you can give me a fancy shmancy console but it will never live up to the quality of the Nintendo 64. If you're a gamer your life is incomplete without this wonderful console.

Donkey Kong 64 -

I remember when I was younger, a friend would come over and sometimes bring Donkey Kong 64 with him and we would play until our parents would turn the game off. It was so much fun that it became my favorite game I ever played. So one day I decided to purchase it and I still would play it until my parents would turn the game off.

This game took me over sixty hours to play my first time I played adventure mode. It's long and there are some really difficult and frustrating levels, and when you finish getting a tough golden banana you feel like that it took you ten years. But it's so much fun that you keep playing it until you finish the game.

Well now it's time to talk about the story. King K Rool is trying to destroy DK isles with his Blast-O-Matic machine. But King K Rool's ships crashes and his machine malfunctions and his ship comes face-to-face with DK isles. King K Rool captures all the Kong's (besides Donkey Kong) and steals their hoard of golden bananas. Donkey Kong needs to help his fellow Kong's escape and get their hoard of golden bananas back and stop King K Rool from destroying their precious island.

There are old and new characters in this game. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are familiar characters because they were in previous games. But Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong and Chunky Kong are all new characters. Each character has his or hers own power up to use for certain tasks and amount of regular bananas and golden bananas to get. (It's a group effort)

Cranky Kong lets the Kong's have their own potion, Funky gives the Kong's weapons and Candy gives the Kong's musical instruments to use. (But you have to give them coins) And Snide the weasel helps you get golden bananas each time you collect a blueprint of the Blast-O-Matic machine.

Some additional characters are the banana fairies which live on Fairy Island (only Tiny can access the inside of their cave with one of Cranky's potions) Also Rambi the Rhino and Enguarde the Swordfish are in this game to. (But only Donkey Kong can use Rambi, and only Lanky Kong can use Enguarde) And a parrot named Squawks who mainly gives information to the Kong's.

The levels of this game are amazing. Each one you have to unlock by getting a Boss key. (I'll talk about that later in my review) There are eight worlds, Jungle Japes, Angry Aztec, Frantic Factory, Gloomy Galleon, Fungi Forest, Crystal Caves, Creepy Castle and Hideout Helm. You have to get enough regular bananas and golden bananas to unlock the boss. Then you defeat the boss to get a boss key to get to the next world.

K Lumsy is caged up by King K Rool and every boss key you get and bring back to K Lumsy to open up the cage, opens up a new level for you to play as well.

The bosses in this game can be a real pain. There is a boss name Army Dillo (an armadillo; what else), Dogadon (a giant dragonfly), Mad Jack (a crazy jack in the box), Pufftoss (a puffer fish), King Kut Out (a cardboard cutout), and the last boss King K Roll himself. Everyone will have a tough time on Mad Jack and Pufftoss but those bosses don't even compare to the difficulty of beating King K Rool. In Donkey Kong Country you hit him with a few barrels and you win the game. In this game you have to beat King K Rool in boxing with each Kong, which takes quite a while and a lot of trying over and over again.

There are also many bonus items to get, King K Rool Crowns, Banana fairy photographs, a Rareware coin and a N64 coin. For the Rareware coin you play the Jetpack game, and for the N64 coin you play the original Donkey Kong game which will drive you crazy because you only get one live.

The music in this game is fantastic as well. Some tracks that especially stick out are DK isles, Jungle Japes and Fungi Forest. The quality of the music makes the game play value even better. (They made a Donkey Kong 64 soundtrack but unfortunately it's not in the bundle.)

There are also mini games for multi player mode. You can play Monkey Smashes (with up to four players) and Battle Arena's (with up to four players as well) which are really fun. There are also single player mini games with Rambi the Rhino and Enguarde the Swordfish.

Overall this is a GREAT game that will never ever get dull. (This review did... sheesh)

So the Donkey Kong Rumble Pack has the following:

Nintendo 64 (Jungle Green colored)

Nintendo 64 Controller (Jungle Green colored)

Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak

Donkey Kong 64
