Modern handheld gaming has long been dominated by Nintendo and Sony. Each hardware manufacturer has multiple viable offerings derived either directly, or evolving from the respective DS and PlayStation Portable product lines. All of these devices are impressive multifunctional devices, with designs meant to encourage gameplay on the go, integration with the Internet, backwards compatibility to previous games, and so on, but each goes about this in different ways. Taking a few minutes to examine the main features, and getting more familiar with available options, accessories and possible limitations of each handheld is the optimal way to determine which is the best choice for a player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best edition of the DS you can get. November 9, 2010
By A.C.
Color Name:Red| Edition:Special Edition Bundle|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was very excited about this DSi ever since I heard about it, and having received it I am very happy with my purchase. I already had a DSi but I like the monstrously large screens on the XL and this special edition was a perfect excuse as I sort of collect these things too anyway. The "Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary" print and special logos on the top are very well done and are under the surface so will not scratch off, and the red is a nice sort of darker shade solid red. Glossy on the top surface and a pleasant matte finish around the sides and back which is great because you can avoid fingerprints this way.

The ONLY downside to the DSi in general, are the DSiWare games, in which once you purchase them, they are locked to that specific system. So for me who had a handful of titles downloaded on my older DSi, I could not transfer them as Nintendo won't yet allow it. More people need to complain to them about that!

Anyway, all in all, very satisfied, highly recommended. A MUST for collectors and definitely worth it for first time DS buyers or anyone who likes the screen size here and wants a great library of games available on the platform.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you didn't get the XL yet, get this November 8, 2010
Color Name:Red|Edition:Special Edition Bundle
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was there on day 1 when the XL launched this year way back in March in Burgundy. I won't be getting this bundle because I already had an XL, and I had Mario Kart, so for me there is no point. However, there is a point for some, keep reading because the review starts now.

Back in 2004, the DS was launched. All was good. A smaller version called the DS lite was launched, all was better. Then the DSi with its internet connectivity, all was excellent. Now we have the XL, and things are about the same.

First of all, if you want a handheld game console to connect with the internet, take pictures to upload to Facebook or to have on your computer, and have access to DSiware games, then consider getting some form of the DSi. If you are content with just playing your games, stick with the original (the "phat") or the Lite.

To decide between a regular DSi and an XL model can be tricky. Both of them have pictochat, dsi camera, dsi sound, dsi shop, internet, and the function to play ds games. The XL advantage is big screens, 3 pre installed titles, and in the case of this particular bundle a Mario Kart game and decals to commemorate Mario's 25th birthday. All of these reasons are enough to not only get an XL, but to get this bundle in particular.

However, consider this. The XL's robust experience is fine for those of us with big hands, it is very unkind to those with small hands. It's like the Burger King commercial where it says that you need big hands to handle a Whopper, you need big hands to handle an XL.

If you have got a DS lite, or no DS at all, and want to upgrade to an Xl and you still don't have Mario Kart DS, this is a bundle to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nintendo has done it again, again. November 10, 2010
Color Name:Red| Edition:Special Edition Bundle|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Skipping the history of the DS, NIntendo always offers something "better" each year around this time. I, like many, wait for the "big" one. I believe this is it. This limited edition DSI XL has to be the cherry on top of the cake. I missed out last year on the DSI package that was priced for the DS Lite, which included various Mario games.

The DSI XL features a full internet browser and a much bigger screen. This screen allows you to use the touch screen with greater ease. Pokemon Ranger, Metroid, Zelda, and many other games are now played easier with a bigger stylus and screen.

To compare:
My little brother now has a DSI and I have a DSI XL. We both play Pokemon Ranger, but he has more trouble drawing the rings around the Pokemon to capture them.

Although the cameras were not improved, it is not enough to knock the DSI XL out of the race in hand held gaming. Neither should the games that are pre installed hold it back. It is what it is. A limited edition version of an already successful gaming system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy fun for all ages November 27, 2010
Color Name:Red| Edition:Special Edition Bundle|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Not sure why this doesnt have all 5 star reviews, its that good. The screen size is much larger and better than the old DSi and the entire unit looks supersized.

This is NOT too big for a small kid, my 4 year old loves it, cant get it away from him. It took him about 15 minutes to get used to Mario Cart game and driving while holding down the A button, but by the end of the day he was in 1st place every time. I suggest you buy the screen protectors and install immediately if you have little ones in the house.

The older boys have been playing it too, thought they were maybe too old at first, but then caught the wife playing and I am having fun with it too, I may have to buy another one.

Happy to find out that WPA2 is supported Wi-Fi security settings.

Charge time is not long maybe 2 hours and it stays going long after I would have thought it couldnt. We keep getting interest from other people wanting to know what it is or where we got the SUPER DSi, I just tell them go to Amazon.com.
