3.0 out of 5 stars Great shakes, please give us a back light!
This is a great little system, but I can't see to play the games! You have to sit out in direct sun to see the screens, and then the sun glares off them....hopeless.

A friend got a back lighter installed, and it got a tiny but annoying flaw in it, dust between the screens. Now I don't know if I should get mine done or not. This is stupid. Why should we have to risk our...

5.0 out of 5 stars Handheld Mania...in 32-bit, December 1, 2001
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
This handheld system is the latest in handheld technology. It is 32-bit, with a 50% wider screen, stereo sound, 15 more hours of battery life, TWO Left and Right 'shoulder' buttons, four player linked games, NINTENDO GAMECUBE hookup, and more. And this system features an extensive list of game that you can play. You can play games from the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color games and is the only system compatable with Game Boy Advance Games, hence the name.

The Games that are out, and shall be coming out for this system are amazing. Take Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for instence: this game is th first 3-D handheld game, and its from the top selling Tony Hawk series. You skate around the 3-dimensional skate parks trying to improve your rider, complete goal, unlock new skate parks and skaters, and also, if your good enough, unlocking cheats!

Another game is Mario Kart: Super Curcuit. You can reace at over 20 brand new tracks in three differant engine speeds. If you race well, you unlock 20 more tracks, all of which are form the hit game, Super Mario Kart for the Super NES system of yesteryear. You can be all of the racer from the Mario Kart 64 game. Racers include: Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey-Kong, and Bowser.

And more games are coming out all the time for this system. Some games that are coming out are: Mech Platoon: a Game Boy Advance version of Mech Commander; it's a Real-Time Stratagy game. And the new Army Men Game, which, like the early computer versions of Army Men (if you remember those) is an isometric/3-D style of a game with Army Men.

With all this stuff for the GBA, why wouldn't you buy one (unless you don't like handhelds). It makes for the perfect holiday gift. So click on that button at the top of the page and order one TODAY

Ps...I don't work for Amazon.com...:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable SNES, October 1, 2001
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
This is the very first 32 bit portable system, to give it a comparison, the SNES is a 16 bit system and the N64 is of course a 64 bit system. For starters, the screen is about the same size as a sticker on a N64 game cartridge, and the size is the same as a Gameboy turned sideways. However, the width is super slim less than the width of a N64 game. The button configuration has something to be desired though, as there are the traditional A and B buttons, then the start and select buttons are so tiny and placed far away from the A and B. An added touch is that there are L and R buttons, however from the N64 and SNES controllers, the L and R buttons wear out quickly and no one wants to pay $$ for a new GBA. The sound is very advanced and you can make out voices and speech in games like Super Mario 2. As for the screen, we all know that its in brilliant color, however the screen is not the greatest thing to make out, especially with dark or high speed games. Another huge plus is you can play normal Gameboy / Gameboy Color games on it! The final feature is that it only requires two AA batteries and there are several battery pack adapters for play of up to 20 hours (sold separately).

5.0 out of 5 stars The system that shows off the true power of a game boy!, April 21, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
Game boy: no color and lame graphics. Game boy Color: Improved graphics and color. Game boy Advanced... The coolest portable system in the whole universe!!!!!! Let me tell you about this GBA. Some magizine told a lie about " It couldn't play game boy or GBC games". But that's [a lie], it can play them. Also SOME game boy color games can have more secrets if you play them on GBA. For example if you play Legend of Zelda oracle of ages [or seasons] there is an Advance shop that you can't get on GBC, and in Wendy every Witch's way there are 3 secret levels you can't get on GBC. The graphics of GBA games are breathtaking. The gaphics are equal to the SNES, also there are some SNES games they put on GBA like Super Mario World, Prehistoric Man, Breath of fire 1 and 2 and more games, three popular games of PS1 are Rayman Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the dragon. Games like Golden sun, Peter pan Wario land 4, Frogger, Mario cart, Advanced wars, the 3 syooges[!],and more are on the GBA. You can connect the GBA to the cell phone to get Internet access! BUY IT YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome for me, December 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
Well, this color is popular, and so is the system. It consists of 6 buttons and 1 D pad. Start, Select, A, B, L, and R. This game console allows you to also play GBA, GB, and GBC games. You can use a gameboy or gameboy color gameshark with this. Since you can stretch the games picture from GB or GBC, it is perfect. A con though is the screen, it can easily be scratched, but I heard you can buy another [inexpensively] on a website by credit card or mail order. The games for this system does really well, half the size of a GB or GBC game. 4 megabytes of fun for the people, a lot more than the others (GBA is 32 megabits, divide it by 8 and get 4 megabytes). The batteries last longer, but the wormlight would leave a glare (a light, of course). I would probably get the new lightshield since it uses it own batteries (2 AAA batteries) which can lasts up to 20 hrs. It also protects the screen too. From what I learned, this GBA is the size of a GBC (cool eh?), can fit in any GBC carrying case. Press L to stretch the screen of a GB or GBC game, R to default (it starts in default anyways). Just take extra care of the GBA ok? Be very careful abou the screen too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and convienent console!, October 13, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
The Game Boy Advance is a really good console. It is very convienent for traveling, boring days, etc. The graphics and sound on it are very good, especially compared to the Game Boy Color. One of the best things is that you can play the Game Boy Color games on it. I also find that the GBA is more comfortable that the Game Boy Color, and my hands aren't as cramped.

However, on some games it is a little hard to control, especially on racing games. An analog stick would have been nice. The thing that the GBA is in need of most is a mini-light. I often have to squint my eyes or hold it at a certain angle just to be able to see.

But what it boils down to is that the Game Boy Advance is a very convienent and fun console. It is defenintly worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gameboy Advance, Get It Today (If you can), June 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
Take it from me, a Toys 'R' Us R-Zone veteran, the Gameboy Advance is the gift to give or the thing to buy for yourself. The excitement built around this incredible, 32 bit system is amazing. And, the games for the system are even more incredible. If you are still trying to decide whether to buy it or not, go to Toys 'R' Us today and try Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. This game shows the true 3-D graphics ability of the system. Words cannot describe the reaction when one plays Tony Hawk 2 for the GBA.

And, if you are trying to decide color, the most popular is Glacier, then Indigo, and the least popular is Arctic.

4.0 out of 5 stars What!!! NO BACKLIGHT!!!??? Unless..., October 28, 2002
By
"jonnydanger" (Denver, CO, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
Don't get me wrong, I love the GameBoy Advance, but seriously, WHAT WAS NINTENDO THINKING??? What was going through their minds when they decided not to have the GameBoy advance backlit. How would you feel if you bought a cell phone that wasn't backlit and the only way you could get a clear picture was in direct sunlight. I've tried EVERY aftermarket clip on light you can buy but they're not really practical. They are either not bright enough, have horrible glare, or don't light the screen evenly, and the ones that are bright enough are so heavy and bulky your GameBoy is hardly portable. It really annoys the heck out of me!

There is an aftermarket upgrade out there that fixes this problem. It's called the Afterburner and is made by Triton Labs. You must install it inside the GameBoy and it works beautifully. It completely lights up the entire screen with a brilliant, even light. But it's not perfect either. The installation takes about 4 hours and is an EXTREMELY stressful and difficult procedure. I ruined my GameBoy trying to install one.

I suggest buying a GameBoy with an Afterburner pre-installed from a PROFESSIONAL. I bought mine at www.GameGrip.net and it works beautifully. Now I can play my GameBoy in complete darkness and can see every detail. It's awesome. I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but there are things to consider, December 8, 2002
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
I bought this latest version of the extremely popular Game Boy handhelds nearly one and a half years ago. For the first few months, I couldn't get enough of playing GBA, and it quickly became my favorite electronic diversion, ahead of the computer and my Sega Dreamcast. But as the various cons to the system started outweighing the pros, I gradually became fed up with the system I onced loved. Before you buy the GBA, you should consider the following flaws; for some they will be tolerable, but for others like myself, time is better spent elsewhere.

1) System design - You've inevitablly seen this over and over and over again, but it is extremely important nonetheless. The lack of backlight is an extreme pain, as an adequate image is often very difficult to come by. Any underlight room will not work at all, and the glare of the sun washes out the colors on the GBA's screen. Another issue I think is just as important is the buttons: there are only two face buttons (A+B), two triggers, and the standard Start and Select. This hampers gameplay on certain types of games, such as fighting. Also, this lessens the ability of the GBA to faithfully recreate SNES classics (more on this later)

2) Sound - A very small gripe, and easy to fix: get some headphones!

3) Remakes of classics - Nintendo has done an excellent job converting the best games of the 16-bit age, such as the Super Mario World games and Zelda, into their portable counterparts. Even so, I would much rather play any of these games on a Super Nintendo. Why? Because the minimal to no updates on these gaming gems are not enough to counter the flaws of the GBA's design. Besides that, it's much more fun to pop in a Super Metroid cartridge into your SNES and experience true retro gaming. Also, multiplayer on the GBA requires everyone to have their own system, whereas you just need multiple controllers for the SNES.

4) Other options - I just read on a leading video game news site that Nintendo is releasing an adapter for the GameCube that lets you play GBA games on the console, much like the Super Gameboy adapter available for SNES. If you're interested in the GBA just for some of its exlusive smash hits (such as Advance Wars and Golden Sun), this might be a route to consider. Also, if this is a gift you plan to get someone, why not give them a cell phone that lets you play some fairly complex games (as opposed to games on a Snake-like level)? A great way to have fun and get a phone at the same time! The Sega Nomad or GameGear are two handhelds made by Sega that play Genesis games. These systems are obscure but actually well-designed and fun to play... except for their horrible battery-life problems!

Some of these issues may not apply to the average Joe or the average gamer. Many people will be content with the pros of the GBA, which there are many of. But if you are looking for a quick fix for gaming or an intense gaming experience, there are other options that may suit you better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good System, November 21, 2005
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Nintendo Game Boy Advance - White (Video Game)
With all the hype about the psp and the ds this little system could be lost in videogame lore.Even though it dosn't have a backlit screen it has a lot of colors. It fits very well into your hands(well for me I'm not sure about adults)and is very comforable.Even though it is nearly 5 years old it still is very fun to play some of my favorites are Golden Sun Lost Age which has AMAZING graphics. Some of the more recent games have primitive polygonal graphics such as need for speed underground. One of the best features is that it can play Gameboy and Gameboy color games and can even sort of stretch the pixels out because the color screen was much smaller.Having 32-bit graphics most games are decent but are nothing compared to the ds or psp.If you want backlit screens you can get the sp,micro or even the ds(though it can only play gba games not gameboy or color games)but I think nintendo should lower the price for it has stayed the same since 3 years ago when I bought it ($70)to maybe $50 so budget gamers can get it.Overall this is a great product and recomended to everyone!

I say "ditto" to all of the other reviews; the GBA is the best system when you're on the go, and it has plenty of gems to keep you busy such as Super Mario Advance 2, Mario Kart Super Circuit, and Sonic Advance. To all of you who have been complaining about no internal light--there is something called the Afterburner Kit... You can install it in your GBA and it will play in darkness. See for yourself!...
