5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I'd ever expected!, May 2, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The FC Twin is even more than what it promises. Yes, it's a system that plays old Nintendo and Super Nintendo cartridges (PERFECTLY!), and the controllers are exact replicas of the SNES controllers, but this system is an improvement over both old systems, too.

For starters, the FC Twin is far more compact than either system. It's only slightly wider than an SNES cartridge and about 2/3rds as deep as an SNES. it will easily fit on an already crowded shelf next to your DVD player and other entertainment systems.

Secondly, the system connects to your television with modern RCA cables instead of the old coaxle connector. This means you can put the sound through your stereo system and also be confident that this will connect to any modern television set (including flat panel screens).

Finally, the NES component is a top loading cartridge system utilizing a card slot reader, so it plays classic Nintendo cartridges with far fewer problems than the original system. This means less time spent blowing on your old cartridges, hoping they'll work this time around.

The FC Twin has been ideal for my needs in terms of cost efficiency (cheaper than buying either original system), space efficiency (smaller than either system), and reliability (more reliable than an NES), but there are some minor imperfections that buyers should be warned about:

1. The FC Twin uses SNES controller sockets, which means that any SNES controller device can be used with the FC Twin, but classic NES controller devices (like the Zapper) cannot.

2. According to Wikipedia, the following Nintendo games will not work with this system: Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Dragon Warrior II, L'Empereur, and Rad Racer II.

3. Also according to Wikipedia, the following SNES games will not work with this system: BatterUP, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Star Ocean, and Kirby Super Star.

The flip side of this is that the rest of the games DO work. So, unless you're particularly attached to the above games, this is the system for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to revive your old games, December 21, 2006
The patents for the NES and SNES parts all finally expired in 2005, so third-party hardware can be manufactured without licensed approval by Nintendo. This is exactly what the FC Twin is: a just-now-legal third party SNES/NES hardware product. Basically, it plays NES and Super NES games. Nintendo still owns the trademarks to those names, though, so no such reference is made on the console itself.

I picked mine up for $55 at a used game store here (new, not used); and a few spots online sell them for $60. It costs the same as any modern game title, so if you can buy games at all you can probably spare the cash for one of these. It also supplies both NES and Super NES functionality, cutting down shelf and wall-plug space and giving your older games for both systems a longer life cycle.

The Super NES seems visibly flawless in this model. I've played through Super Metroid and Illusion of Gaia, as well as a little StarFox; being a hardware clone, the Twin achieves full compatibility with titles using the DSP and Super FX expansion chipsets. The system comes with 4 foot controllers; original SNES controllers use 6 foot cables. Either get an extension, or use a real SNES controller; all original SNES controllers including the mouse and Super Scope work.

The NES also performs nearly flawless, using Super NES controllers. It won't play Duck Hunt, you can't use the light gun through an SNES port. The system also doesn't quite implement the sound functions of the 2A03 quite right; some of the sound effects may sound slightly off. Do not play NES games through surround sound systems unless you can turn them to mono or otherwise just clone the same out to every channel; doing some kind of Hall or Dolby ProLogic filtering causes the sound to get all messed up and freaky sounding, a lot more than just a few sound effects having misshapen waves.

All in all, I like it. I don't have to worry about my SNES dying now, or my NES needing a new ZIF socket (the Twin uses a more durable card slot).

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect product, May 10, 2007
I am another one who still enjoys the NES and SNES classics. I had an original SNES console that I bought used for a few bucks, but it eventually stopped working for good. I also had a YOBO console that played original NES games, but it was cheaply made and you had to use a clunky converter that would not sit well in the slot, thus killing a game in progress. It also stopped functioning and I got rid of that as well. I did not want to pay top dollar for used and old SNES and NES consoles that could break at anytime, so I shelved my old games.

I Then saw an ad for something called the "FC Twin" a few months back. I thought it was fake, since I wondered how in the world can a console play two different types and sizes of carts? Plus there are lots of prototypes of off the wall consoles floating around on the 'net, so my skepticism remained. I then did some research, and lo and behold, it was real and surprisingly on Ebay for an astonishingly low price. I picked one up for $50 and it works like a charm.

I also like the fact that it uses RCA cables instead of the old RF connectors. As mentioned by other reviewers, you can hook this up to your big screen and really enjoy your old games in larger than life form. The easy to use switch that lets you go back and forth between the NES and SNES games is very handy, and the small compact size makes it very easy for storage and travel. Nice comfortable controllers as well.

So if you are looking to revive your old classic Nintendo titles and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for the original consoles, this system is for you.
