The NES/SNES/Genesis ports work flawlessly. Despite reviews of lag, I've noticed none. Although to their defense, I have not tried the turbo or joy stick controllers, just the originals. EDIT: (I have since tried it with the AsciiPad super NES controller and it does indeed lag with the turbo/slow functions making them to slow to be useful. But it works fine for basic...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mine is perfect for NES/SNES/Genesis, April 8, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I'm not sure what the other reviewer's problem was, but mine works flawlessly. I'll admit that I haven't tested the Nintendo 64 port, but the NES, Super NES and Genesis ports work perfectly. A nice feature (perhaps just incidental) is that you can leave multiple controllers plugged in at once and all of them will work -- no need to unplug an NES controller to use the SNES controller and so on. I imagine most people are interested in this for those three ports anyway (the GameCube controller seems like it would be adequate for the Wii's N64 virtual console games). If I am able to edit this review, I will test this later with an N64 controller - I have some around I just haven't needed to use them for anything lately.

I have been using this on my Gamecube with Sonic Mega Collection, Namco Museum 50th Anniversary, and Midway Arcade Treasures 1 + 2. I have also tested it with the SD Media Launcher which allows you to run emulators for NES/SNES/Genesis/TG16/etc, and it feels just like I'm playing the original systems. It will perform identically on a Wii console, as the GameCube-compatible hardware (controller ports, etc.) is exactly the same in the Wii as it is on the GameCube.

Again, it's perfect as far as I'm concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the Wii owner with a taste for the classics, August 27, 2010

No beating about the bush..this is a great little item. I play alot of classics on the wii, and as we all know, the wiimote, great as it is, doesn't do well on alot of the classic games..so when I saw the 4n1 I jumped all over it and hoped for the best. I can safely say my hopes were met. The 4n1 plugs into your wii's gamecube port, and has a goodly sized cable that runs to a small white box with the four connectors. The Cable from the box to the wii is quite adequate, however I needed a bit more length so I bought a Gamecube extender cable and I'm happy to report it works fine with the 4n1. Once connected, the 4n1 acts as a gamecube stick and I can tell you i've had ZERO problem with it. I've tried MK, Capcom vs, Data East Classic, and all the Virtual Consoles games, and aside from the aforementioned button swap on the N64 controls, these are dead on. I read other review that mentioned lag..I can tell you I've had ZERO lag. I've tried every port with multiple sticks and can only say that personally I've had nothing but good results. For the price, I think this is a helluva deal, and I recommend the 4n1 highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars NES/SNES/GENESIS - PERFECT FOR THESE SYSTEMS, April 16, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I had no problems playing with NES / SNES / GENESIS controllers at all. I had a few issues with the N64 controller, but I realized that my controller was actually broken, and not the item itself.

When I received it, I loved the packaging design, the package was completely sealed. You could tell that the manufacturer, Gtron I believe, has put in some serious quality control on the packaging and product.

First impressions: the product is nicely labeled so you know at least where to insert your controllers. The product also has a red indicator light in the center of product notifying you that the product has been officially recognized.

It's a huge help that there are only two settings for a switch, one for NES/SNES/GENESIS and one for N64

Games played:
NES - Super Mario Bros - Mapping & Button config, flawless, no lag

SNES - Final Fantasy II - Mapping & button config, flawless, no lag

Genesis - I gained the strength to spend 800 points on a genesis game just to purchase Altered beast, again, no problems

N64 - I need to find my old controllers as well, I will come back and report my results as soon as I find it.

The adapter gives me that original retro feeling when I was back in my early 20's. I love it.

But it works fine for basic control and brings back that authentic experiance, complete with sore thumbs and blisters)

If you want to play wii classic games with their original controller this is a great product. There really is no alternative unit that combines these three systems. I have seen them separatly but not together. I will be keeping it for this reason. Think of it as a 3 in 1 retro adapter.

Forget about the N64 port, it's unplayable. The N64 port works but GTRON maped the buttons instead of adding a remapper. It should have been Z>L instead of Z>Z in the majority of N64 games. But even if they did that, it would not work for all N64 games as some require the Z=Z maping. Nintendo changed the mapping to work for the GC and Wii classic controlers which is the root of the problem. GTRON should have resolved it in the firmware of their adapter. They didn't. The Result is that the Z button and the left shulder buttons are reversed. Every other button works fine and the thumb stick senseativity was correct on mine. Also, the rumble pack is NOT supported. The wii virtual console doesn't support rumble anyway, so I tested it on the gamecube Zelda OOT/MQ promo disc where I know rumble is enabled.

The List of N64 games I've tested:
- Zelda OOT/MQ (Promo disc)& MM: No Z targeting or "Stone of Agony"
- Mario Cart 64: No firing pickups
- Starfox 64: No Left bank/roll
- Super Mario 64: Works perfectly! WHY? Z&L have the same function.

Easy mistake to make if you don't test your product before releasing it to the public. This is a real shame when all that's needed to fix it is by adding a remapper so you can customize button assignments manually.

I reccomend this as a 3 in 1 adapter that plays Mario 64. I'm satisfied with it as such. Get a separate adapter for the other N64 titles. I found a 2 in 1 N64/Playstation 2 adapter with custom mapping. Now I have a 5 in 2 adapter. Maybe I'll glue them together and splice the wires to make it a 5 in 1!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for N64, July 10, 2010
By
Bill Buerger (Somerset, WI United States) - See all my reviews
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
I bought this for playing N64 Virtual Console games on my Wii. Specifically the Zelda games. VC switches the Z and L buttons because it makes sense on the Game Cube controller where the Z button is in a bad spot. But that means that the Z/L buttons are switched on the N64 controller and it's very difficult to hit the L button on the N64 when your hand is on the analog stick. So it's not useful at all for playing zelda. Plus the sensitivity of the analog stick is a bit off. I have to really jam on the controller to move at full speed. Could be my N64 controller but it works fine on the N64.

So overall, it did not work for me. I might go and pick up the adapter from [...] which has options for different button assignments and you can apply sensitivity adjustments. This one might work fine for NES/SNES/Gensis controllers but not for N64.

This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
i tried nes snes and genesis all with my original controllers and worked prefect on the wii VC..all buttons were mapped right.

however when i connected my n64 controller, i noticed the z button was not mapped to the L button on the GC making z trageting in zelda or using items in mario kart impossible..

you will have to buy a seperate special adaptor for n64.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for the hardcore retro enthusiast without priority on N64, January 17, 2012
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
So I just got this today, and I must have not payed enough attention to the other reviews, but I was somewhat surprised and disappointed by this thing's mapping for the N64 controller. Tried two SNES games and they seemed okay, but I'm only now realizing that investing in a Classic Controller Pro would have been a better move, rather than haphazardly thinking that this would prove to be a nostalgia trip--it wasn't.

I largely bought this hoping to play some old games I missed out on in past generations without having to either A) pay extra money for a potentially worn-out cartridge, or B) always have to haul out my old systems. For games like Super Metroid I guess its alright (though, again, I think maybe the Classic Controller would have been preferable with its superior d-pad), but I was really hoping to play games like F-Zero X and Sin and Punishment the way they were meant to be played. The fact that the Z and L buttons are switched (and wasn't considered to be an issue during design and production) is an absurd oversight, enough for this to be considered worthless. Its a damn shame that I can't give this product a better review because of a product design oversight. Its not like I can remap the buttons in-game, either, outside of presets that don't meet my needs.

I don't know if its worth mentioning, but for some reason, two out of my three N64 pads didn't want to function its analog stick properly, both being the packed-in grey and transparent purple pads from way back when, while the working controller was my limited edition Nintendo Power "Millenium 2000" pad, which worked perfectly fine. I haven't tried testing them on my N64, but alas.

Ultimately, its a flawed product that only serves people who want to play purely NES/SNES/Genesis games with their old pads.

TLDR; Z button and L button for N64 port are swapped. There is no button mapping, and frankly the d-pad on the Classic Controller and its Pro variant are superior to the SNES/NES.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Amazing, January 10, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
After looking around for a while for something that could let me use my n64 controller on the wii i came across this. I was skeptical to buy it based on the wide range of reviews good and bad. But after seeing the other products that claim to due what this one does I decided to go for it and i purchased it. I have had zero problems and it worked right away just plug it into the controller slot and it works

4.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly with homebrew, except for one issue., December 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
Like all the other reviews said, it does exactly what it intended, and it does no remapping of input. However, there is an issue where pressing START + SELECT causes every input to be turbo'd, which makes it annoying to go to the menu of FCEUGX as you have to press START+SELECT+A+B to go to it, and any game that requires you to press START+SELECT will also see this be an issue.

I'm going to compile versions of FCEUGX for myself that allow L+R+X+Y to get to the menu, as I just use this for Genesis, SNES, and N64 controllers, and play NES games with the SNES controller. Besides that issue, it'd be 5 stars if there was some way of disabling the turbo.

2.0 out of 5 stars Input lag ... only with Nintendo controllers?, November 29, 2011
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nintendo Wii 4-in-1 Virtua Retro Adapter (Accessory)
The first unit that was shipped to me didn't work at all. Amazon gets five stars for sending me a replacement at lightning speed. Unfortunately, "lightning speed" is the exact opposite of the working product's response time to input. The strange thing is, for me it's different depending on the controller port I use. SNES has the worst lag, NES is a little better, but Genesis is almost perfect, even in the same game (in my case, Super Mario World). Unfortunately I was mainly interested in NES and SNES games, so this adapter doesn't do me a whole lot of good. But I also played Sonic 2 with a Genesis controller and it was 100% playable. Strange device, which I unfortunately cannot recommend for anyone but Sega fans (provided my experience is typical). I think I'll stick with USB adapters and a PC for retro games from here on out.
