Touching story about a poverty stricken boy in a large religious family living under mid-century eastern European communism. It is very well written and employs an appropriate and distinct voice. Until near the end, that is, when the main character suffers an emotional break as the consequence of a chain of events he himself sets in motion. The author then gets a little too experimental and the writing becomes clipped, jumpy and nearly incomprehensible. It was jarring and unnecessary. I understand what the author was intending, and appreciate his imaginative efforts, but that section made the end of the book a real chore.

All in all, though, it is worth a read.
