Order Mac Tonight!,
By Kevin M. Holden (Boone, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nirvana Blues (Audio CD)
This album by Mac Gayden is a real find, crammed full of bluesy rock nuggets. Perhaps best known as the writer of the seventies pop hit "Everlasting Love" (which was covered recently by U2 for the "Forces of Nature" soundtrack), Mac Gayden delivers a winner here. His unique style of playing slide guitar with a "wah-wah" pedal highlights a cool range of original tunes and a kickin' version of JJ Cale's "Crazy Mama." If you know who Mac is, you won't be disappointed. If you've never heard of him, take a chance and order this one.

and had the pleasure of once upon a time playing with he, Bobby Russell and others in our hometown of Nashville. The very last time I saw Mac, was as an attendee at a Bo Diddley small venue in Nashville. This is a great cd by a guy who has seen the many sides of music. It is inspiring that after many years, Mac, Steve Cropper and others of our generation continue to contribute....thanks Mac for your good music.

I've been a long time fan of Barefoot Jerry and have several of their albums on vinyl. I saw them live a few times, including a reunion in the late 70's or early 80's in which, if I remember correctly, Gayden participated. As the first track, a cover of J.J.Cale's "Crazy Mama", began playing, it was great after all these years, to again hear the very unique sound of his guitar, although I didn't like the arrangement. The second song "Freedom Road" was a little better, but it still didn't hit the spot. Not a bad song, but just nothing special. Track three, "Shake Something Loose" began to show a sign of life. The next track, "Love Is A Poor Boy's Gold" made me think maybe this was not a very good cd. Good guitar player but sounded like he's just going through the motions.
Track five, the title song "Nirvana Blue" really kicked in. Great song!! I got my hopes up. "Morning Glory" is a remake of a song on his SKYBOAT album, but the arrangement is so different, it doesn't even sound like the same song. "Caney Fork River" is another really good song, and "Black Like Me" is awesome. I'm only going to say the rest of the cd is what I was hoping to hear from Mac. I didn't even know this cd existed until I saw it while searching to see what Barefoot Jerry albums are available on cd. Charlie Daniels mentioned Barefoot Jerry in his song "The South's Gonna Do It Again". Although they played "southern rock", Barefoot Jerry had their own unique sound and so does Mac Gayden. If you liked Barefoot Jerry, country/blues or southern rock, you might like this. I'm happy I found it. Tracks listing 1. Crazy Mama 2. Freedom Road 3. Shake Something Loose 4. Love Is a Poor Boy's Gold 5. Nirvana Blues 6. Morning Glory 7. Caney Fork River Daze 8. Black Like Me 9. Goin Down the Road 10. Reconsider Me 11. Sunnyside 12. Satisfied 13. Preacher Row 14. Rebel Wings
