A good read. Studio details aren't for everyone., June 21, 2005
This review is from: Nirvana: The Complete Recording Sessions (Hardcover)
But Rob makes it a good read for the layman. Nirvana are unique. In a short period of time they went from small independent labels to the "grand mal", and the sessions, studios and budgets tell their own story. Let's hope an update isn't too far off. I recorded Nirvana and I did not participate in this book. I originally trashed this book because of mixed up communications between Rob and I(all my fault BTW). Whenever a Nirvana booked is printed usually I'm miss-quoted or worse. Its no fun and it adds up. This is the fourth appology although its as heartfelt as the first.

an essential Nirvana title, September 13, 2005
This review is from: Nirvana: The Complete Recording Sessions (Hardcover)
Thank you, Ron Jovanovic, for researching and writing this book. In the years since I wrote my first draft of this, my estimation has risen, probably to 4 and a half stars, holding back only because it does read like a reference work at at times. But that is its fuction, after all, and I believe the book serves it well. So Steve Fisk, thank you for reconsidering Jovanovic's work. I offer this revised review, having seen your own second take. Like Fisk says, reading studio details might not be for everyone, but as with released jazz outtakes and recent books about the making of great albums, or behind-the-scenes material about good films, this story of Nirvana's studio work (and some live shows where tracks ended up on various almbums) really enriches a fan's understanding of discogrophy, the band's progression, experimentations, and its methods. Man do I value this book for what it says about music, and about Cobain and the band--and the studio people, of course--working to create it.
It's great to have this detailed, analytical book about the actual music of Nirvana, free of all the tragic baggage that usually muddies discussion of the band. And the book includes full descriptions of music that most of us will never be able to hear, plus countless little band member, producer and critic quotes to really flesh out the text. If there inaccuracies or omissions--and I am in no place to say so, only that an earlier review suggested there might be--but if so, I hope Jovanovic creates later editions, ones that reflect the fixes only folks like Fisk and others would know (and I mean that). But my goodness what an already meaningful and exciting resource Rob Jovanovic has given us! He tells the story of the actual work that made Nirvana significant, a biography of songs, of development, of the art behind the sad headlines, the stuff that must always be the reason to listen, to buy, and to wait for later releases.

Great book for Nirvana fans who appreciate the details, February 21, 2011
This review is from: Nirvana: The Complete Recording Sessions (Hardcover)
This book is not for everyone who loves Nirvana, but if you're into the recording details, this is the book to buy. I was not disappointed and really appreciate that the author took the time to write this book. Reading about the recording sessions gave me a deeper appreciation for Nirvana's music.
