Great Balls of Fire,

I own five of these balls (red, blue, green). They are absolutely fun at night, watching the mysterious orb crash to earth and then magically return to me (via Ci-Ci, my yellow lab who is wearing the flashing collar and pendant). Changing the battery is not too difficult once you get the hang of it. A great product. I'm ordering more for gifts.
I do wish, however, that the internal light mechanism was available separately, since three of the balls are no longer functional and have to be used only during the day. UPDATE: I contacted the company, NiteIze, via their website and mentioned the problem with the internal light mechanism. They got back to me in less than 24 hrs and replaced the mechanisms within a week. This company is serious about their product and stands behind it. I've been very happy with the product and will continue to buy more for my dog-loving, nocturnal friends. BTW, I also own their flashing dog collar and flashing pendant. You can never be too overprotective of your best friend!

This is a great toy for active large-breed dogs. My lab loves to play all the time so we got this ball to throw during the evenings or as the sun goes down. We used to use photoluminescent balls but their ability to glow-in-the-dark often did not last very long and we had to keep "recharging" them as we played. My lab has not (yet) been able to tear this ball up and we throw it high, fast, and against anything as she plays so it has proved to be very durable. The only concern might be that you do have to squeeze kind of hard and hold the ball compressed for a moment to turn it on and off.

As you can imagine, it's tough to entertain three large dogs during wintertime in the Pacific Northwest.
We use this toy to extend our outdoor playtime into the dark, rainy evening hours. The ball came with a very important instruction manual that shows you how to change the batteries (they're included, but you'll want to stock up on replacements) and how to depress the button to turn the LED on and off. It's a bit difficult to push the button, you need hand strength or to step on the ball. That's because it needs to be durable enough a dog can't turn it off just by fetching it. I wish it were a bit bigger though - while my flatcoat retrievers can't choke on it, it's a bit small in their mouths and makes me nervous. I also am glad this lights up - so much easier to find it in the yard when one of the dogs distracts the other and they forget to retrieve it after I throw it. Not the most successful retrievers I guess!! We've enjoyed this so much, I'm going to buy it in another color or two!

It does fit in the chuck it. Ball worked great - very bright - until the plug fell out on a throw during the 1st time we used it for ball play. I then bought a second from a store and within 2 sessions, the same thing occurred. The plug popped out on impact the 1st time and the 2nd time it was from the chewing motion of my lab as he was retrieving the ball. I will now be looking for a glow in the dark ball with no parts.

Battery life is about 2 hours and I think that I am having more fun with it than the dog. My dog can't get it away from me. I imagine that kids would love it for some Summer fun and you can get 25 new batteries for $6.50. Remember to get the batteries on Amazon because they cost about $4 EACH at Radio Shack or other retail stores. Even online stores, with the exception of Amazon, are very pricey, and the unit uses 2 batteries. It's very hard getting the plug out to replace the batteries so don't be afraid of being rough with the screwdriver. For batteries: (25) CR2016 Lithium Button Cell 3V Batteries - Powertron
Condition: New

My dog loves playing with his LED ball, it has been great in extending the time we can stay outside when Daylight savings ends and he won't lose his ball anymore. It generally is easy to turn on and off by pushing in and holding the button down with both thumbs/hands. The material seems very strong, no bite marks apparent, but I don't let my dog hold on to it too long. I give it a quick rinse and dry it when we come back inside because it gets dirty and leafs get stuck to it. I only play with it on the grass, as recommended, because it is heavier than a tennis ball and hits the ground hard when I throw it, (and the ground is harder because it's colder now) but so far haven't had any problems with LED breaking or changing battery, and I've owned it for a month and play with it almost everyday.

This was a gift to my niece's dog & they both love it. Easy to find when it's dusk out and both can keep playing longer. Also it's fun to use.

This is a great nighttime ball, and gives us back the flexibility of playing with the dog in the evenings when the days are very short. I had used (and liked) the glow in the dark chuck-it ball for a couple years, and it has held up very well, but needs to be recharged every several throws. My dog has a limited attention span, so occasionally this presented problems. This LED ball is great. I wondered if having a battery and light inside would create imbalance, but it doesn't. The weight is heavier than the chuck-it ball or a tennis ball, but no heavier than a baseball. The material is tough and rubbery, with a nice matte finish that makes it easy to grip even when slobbery. I've thrown it about 100 times at this point, and it has held up perfectly. My dog is a chewer, and was accidentally left to gnaw on this for a good half hour, but it looks good as new (I wouldn't recommend trying that, though, and I won't be making that mistake again). It's also significantly brighter than the glow ball, so it would be better in snow. For a $9 ball, I am expecting it to hold up quite awhile, and it seems like it will. I'll update if needed; if you don't see any changes to the review, it's still kicking.

My dog totally loves this ball. Very good at playing outside in the dark. The plastic ball is hard and I doubt the dog will chew through it. The button to turn the light on is pretty hard and you definitely need some strength to push it on which is good or else the dog's bite will turn it off.

OK! This ball def beats the ones you have to hold under a light. The LED light is amazing and bright.
One negative: I bought two and I have one dog (Roker) who wants to chew on it instead of bringing it back. Usually, I can get to him quickly, but once he chewed on it just right and turned it off. Surprised I found it. But tonight, I didn't get to him quickly enough and he chewed off the cap and sent the LED light one way, the ball the other and the cap another, well I thought the cap was lost for sure (in all the fallen leaves). I went inside and got a light, pulled out the 100 ft of extension cord and went looking for the cap. After much cursing and anger, I noticed another of our dogs (Levi) playing with something, chewing on it and throwing it into the air. I told him to drop it. I got to it and it was the cover. He got big praises. So, now, trying to get it put back together is no small feat. I tried for about 5 minutes to work it back into the ball. I mean, the ball cost $10----I wasn't giving up! The rubber is so stiff and not pliable and my hands aren't the strongest. So, I rubbed a little PAM cooking spray on the edges of the cap--it went in like a treat. Just hope the PAM doesn't harm the LED or the battery. The blue one is the best for color. I also got the multi-colored one--it changes from BLUE to GREEN to RED to WHITEISH. The BLUE shows up the best at night. |
