5.0 out of 5 stars House-Head Must-Have, October 23, 2005

This review is from: Nite: Life 07 (Audio CD)
This is my favorite house music cd. Garth has selected tracks that are unusual and deeply evocative. Check out track 6 (Bellz), one of the oddest and most beautiful house tracks I've ever heard. The bells ring out austerely, echoing over a complex dubby bass line. When the track climaxes, with the addition of some seriously trippy vocal samples, you may be asking yourself "can house music really be this brilliant?" Yes it can be. Keep listening to the seemless mix into the next track, another haunting classic that holds onto the atmosphere created by the bells. This cd is packed with musical genius.

DJ Garth mixes a fine set of dub/house. He picks nice tracks with variety and depth. Tight beats with dark ambient effects and mostly understated vocals. No boring loops here. Highly reccomended, even for fans of more vocal house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer, February 3, 2003
This review is from: Nite: Life 07 (Audio CD)
Groove's the word and Garth is never short on it. It's hard to express how Garth chooses his beats, in all the house out there I've never heard better beat selection. (coming close would be early "Carl Cox" in "Sound of Ultimate Base" or much of the work of "Mark Farina") Garth pushes the groove and has a unique love for that thick rich driving dub bass that rumbles the floor. While you listen to this CD you'll easily need a good subwoofer or forget it. Garth has the ever experimental and progressive maturity that people have come to associate with the Wicked DJ's and San Franciso sound.

Further I challenge that people who like electronic music in general would find this DJ worthy of a place along side of thier FSOL or Amon Tobin discs.

A master at work DJ Garth is a true original innovator for deep, funky and soulfull tribal house music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Varietal Deepness, July 20, 2004

For fans of happy house, this CD will be a change. You need to think stop&go rythms (Jazzanova), drum&bass ("Container #2), break beats, modern sax, dub, you can even find some connection with electronica - e.g. Authechre- and K$D's slow but very detailed and thourough remixes ("Slippery Tracks"). The first four tracks lean towards the funky, not loosing their underground edge. It then changes to a more electronic influence. Beats constantly change sequences and new sounds are mixed in at a quite rapid pace. It's a late night record or for those for whom the day is way to shiny, it'll be your morning milk: it has a deep influence but is accessible and enjoyable by those who are new or not completely into the "techno" family. In fact jazz fans and even reggae fans will find some drops totally likeable in the big pond of many influences created here. I think the main interest in this record is that array of sounds, which can open you up for a search into other paths. It's always great to find a "courageous" soul still digging for the gold and ignoring the easy way out. DJ Garth has just done that here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked, Wicked, Wicked!!, December 20, 2001
This review is from: Nite: Life 07 (Audio CD)
This is House at its best. DJ Garth's track selection is superb as usual. Dub House, Tech House, Jazzy House. My favorite tracks were Nectar-Bellz (wicked beat, with some dubbed out, creepy sounding bells), Solomonic Sound-Children of Israel (great dub track with reggae vocals), 2 Utes-Up All Night (Dj Buck remixes this track with a beat that makes me want to get up and dance every time I here it), Shuffle Inc.-Remember Chicago (Where were you when you first heard House?). The only problem I had with this CD is that it left me wanting more. 70 minutes just isn't enough. Also check out Garth's Cisco System CD if you can find it. It's a great CD showcasing tracks from Garth's own label, Grayhound Records (and it includes his international underground hit, 20 minutes of Disco Glory). San Francisco Sessions Vol. 3 - DJ Garth is another excellent CD. If you're a true househead, you can't go wrong with Garth.

if you've never heard garth and you're a house head, get on it kid! garth,in keeping with his san franciscan brethren, continues to produce and spin some of the best house out there.the times i've seen him live he's stuck with his wicked crew's feel of funky thumpy tech house, but this cd is a perfect collage of what garth is picking out of the crates, eclectic groovy house.there's almost nothing better than the subtle beauty of track two,
brs'"lovin you",worth the price of the cd alone.garth is a dj that will always throw something into his set that you're not expecting and this mix is no different but once you let go of your preconceptions, you'll realize that he means serious house business. EVERY volume of the nite life series is worth picking up.word 'em up

This mix starts of banging. Instant head nodding!! Then it gets deep. I usually like more deep vocal house i.e. naked music stuff, but as the mix goes through I quick forget that.
