Book Description

July 30, 2007
Why did the scandals known collectively and simply as “Watergate” occur? Who were the men responsible? Where did they come from, and how did they arise to such positions of power? Why didn’t Nixon control them, and why did they not control him? Nixon and His Men: The Road Through Watergate seeks to answer these questions and more. This book focuses primarily on Nixon and eleven of his men, including G. Gordon Liddy, Chuck Colson, and John Dean. It is a story of great success, tremendous failure, and for some the hint of redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars Constructively Exploring Personalities, Fatal Flaws, and Ultimate Humility, October 31, 2007

This review is from: Nixon and His Men: The Road Through Watergate (Paperback)
Journey into the very center of one of the most intriguing and hated experiences in American history. This work constructively examines eleven men and their president in an administration that moves from hubris to humility. Holder introduces the Nixon team already in place in 1969, moves the reader to Watergate, then rewinds to explore their individual backgrounds that brought them to that moment in 1972. Returning to the narrative, the reader now understands this team to be an amalgam of talented but flawed men, a combination embodied by their leader. In the end, some individuals overcome their experiences in an administration with noteworthy accomplishments but forever with a tainted legacy.

Detailed and insightful, this work focuses on the style, personalities, and ambitions of Nixon's key men. Primary sources include personal interviews with Jeb Stuart Magruder, John Dean, and Bud Krogh, plus some of Chuck Colson's unpublished reflections provided by Prison Fellowship. Dr. Holder's second book on presidential history is probing and interesting, as he establishes himself as an impartial and constructive author.
