As a photography enthusiast, I was blown away by this frame! The images are tack sharp, bright, and with vibrant colors perfectly matching what I see on my Mac. And by managing images in the cloud, this is the perfect vehicle for younger generations to share their lives and adventures with their relatives. I can log in, upload by photos, create playlists, and push them out to the frame, while my parents and grandparents just sit back and enjoy the new photos.

I only have 2 complaints:
1. There is not enough information regarding image formatting. The first time I tried uploading photos, I got an error message stating simply "file is too big" with no additional information. I searched through all the documentation I had and on Nixplay's website, and nothing clearly stated the recommended DPI resolution or image dimensions to use. It was only after reading another review here on Amazon that I found the information I needed. After resizing my images to 1920 x 1080 pixels and 72 DPI, the images started uploading and then I could see a message that the max file size allowed is 10MB (this would have been good to know when I got the error that my files were too big!). Once the photos were uploaded, I added them to an album and a playlist and published them to my frame. Resizing the images will help save tons of online storage space for more photos and they still look fantastic!
2. I can understand the 16:9 resolution for people who shoot sick mountain biking videos with their GoPros, but I feel that is more the exception than the rule. Because the majority of my photos are 4:3 landscapes, I either have to choose between black bars on the edges, or an up-and-down motion of my photos. I would greatly prefer more of a Ken Burns zooming effect on this frame or a traditional 4:3 sized frame.

Great picture quality, questionable software. I bought two of these frames- one 8" and one 13". Both have terrific photo quality. I haven't seen a better photo frame as far as picture quality goes. Unfortunately, the great quality is offset by buggy software. When using the online photo system, the frames will lock up every couple of days forcing you to pull the power cord to reset. They will also randomly forget to go into sleep mode or wake up at the allotted time. This is random though- it will work for several days, then stop working for a day or two, only to start working again. It's frustrating.

I can live with the quirks since the picture is so nice, but I put one of the frames in my technically challenged Mom's house so I could send her pictures of the grandkid. After a few freezes, she gave up and put the frame in a drawer. IF they advertise the ability to send pictures remotely to grandparents, having the s/w work consistently enough that it doesn't frustrate elderly customers would be a must have. They're not quite there yet on the consistency.

The best digital photo frame I've messed with! I've tried photo frames since they started coming out a decade ago - they've been too much of a pain in the butt to update, and pics looked pretty terrible until the last few years. I bought two of these Nixplay 8" hi-res frames for parents and inlaws so kids could easily add pics of grandchildren from a thousand miles away. The setup process is a bit lengthy, but fairly simple to follow along. Pics look great, but I don't have the lower resolution (800x600) along side this high resolution frame to compare. Was it worth the extra $?

Note: For best display of pics, change the default setting for Photo Fit from "Fill Screen" to "Fit to Screen". The frame by default does a pan/scan of photos and it doesn't look at that great. Fit to Screen "shrinks" the pic to fit the screen. That said, your pics must be cropped to 4:3 if they're not already in those proportions, most point and shoot cameras are already. I usually shoot in 16:9 to get a little more wide angle, but those pics will have black bars on top and bottom of pic when on the photo frame. The default setting of "Fill Screen" is supposed to eliminate the need to crop, but it just doesn't work well.

I never write reviews, but I decided to share the issues I encountered below with future buyers to hopefully help with their selection process..I know I would have liked to know this before I bought this frame so I hope you find this helpful:

I researched wifi/cloud digital frames for a month and read countless mixed reviews before I invested in this Nixplay Edge 13". I decided to go with the Nixplay Edge 13" as it is the largest frame on the market with the best pixel resolution. Truth be told, the resolution is spectacular on this frame as advertised (of course assuming the original picture is good). However, I wish someone had told me about the following important details as for me they are game changers.

- If you only have one "playlist" and decide to delete it and replace it with a new one, the frame defaults to it's blue menu screen and does not automatically start playing the new playlist until you press play on the physical frame itself or the frame remote. Meaning, I have to call my mom across Europe and ask her to press play on the frame !!!! NIXPLAY PLEASE FIX THIS as it defeats the whole purpose you advertised of "grandma never having to lift a finger".
[tip to new owners: i found that if create multiple playlists and I always leave one standing playlist with at least one pic that I never delete, I can then avoid this problem and just switch out other remaining playlists as I please. But it was still a painful learning curve that I believe could be avoided before people give up on such a pricy frame and put it away in a drawer....NIXPLAY at least share this tip with people upfront!]

- The remote is very cheap and flimbsy and does not work all the time, and you really need the remote for easy operation

- It is true that you can send pics directly from your iPhone using the Nixplay app, BUT: you can only send 10 pics at a time (Nixplay customer service promised me you can send 20!), and it is very slow. NIXPLAY PLEASE FIX THAT

- When I emailed photos to the Nixplay personal frame email, the pics just sat in an album and did not add to a playlist. Nixplay raves about how anyone can email a photo to the frame from anywhere...why is this feature not working for me? I read on Nixplay website you can add a <Pl: > descriptor in the email title which will tells the frame which playlist to add the emailed photo to, but that did not do anything....NIXPLAY PLEASE FIX THIS

- When on shuffle mode, the same picture repeats multiple times before the entire playlist is displayd. NIXPLAY PLEASE FIX THIS

- This is minor, but still worth mentioning. Even though the website allows you to edit the name of an album, it doesn't take it and just reverts back to the original name you gave it, so you are stuck with that name forever unless you delete and reload the album which is a lengthy process if you are loading hundreds of pics at a time...NIXPLAY PLEASE FIX THIS

All in all, I think this frame has a lot of good potential but software still needs some work in my opinion. Also it would be nice to have the edge model in the 15' or 18' screen size.

This is my second Nixplay frame, first was 12" original, which when I bought it lacked a shuffle option, which was disappointing. But I posted a suggestion to the "Suggestions" section on their web site, and watched progress being made over the last several months, with the feature being added in December. That gave me the confidence to buy their latest Edge frame. I chose the 8" over the 13" since I wanted 4x3 format as 95% of my nearly 20K images have this format. I love to see how much better the 13" HD display is but don't want the black bars I know would displayed on most of my images. That being said I find that the edge frame slides wider/taller photos when displaying, this might solve this issue, I can't say for sure, but it is a great feature of this frame.

As I'd set up a frame before adding another very easy. My biggest problem with the web interface has to do with "Albums" being able to hold a large number of photos (over 500), but Slideshows are limited to 500 so realistically to use albums properly YOU SHOULD NOT PLACE MORE THAN 500 PHOTOS in them; otherwise you will be force to select specific photos from them to be put into a slideshow, as opposed to being able to move an entire album into a slideshow. So I suggest when uploading photos to an album, don't upload more than 500 to an album. The time necessary to break an album into multiply albums using their web interface is time consuming, but it can be done. But save yourself the effort, keep your albums under 500 images when uploading. Any number of slideshows can be added to a frame, but a single slideshow can't contain more than 500 photos. This information may be on their web site, but I found this through what I thought was normal usage.

Since I bought my first frame I've seen a number of improvements int the nixplay web site, including, a much better way to email photos to a specified album. Their software IS IMPROVING CONSTANTLY and I hope there are many more improvements and added functionality coming.

I'd give the 8" Edge frame 5 stars for the hardware but their web software gets 4 stars given some of the current limitations (but it is getting better).

My most recent Nix (a Christmas gift) quit working properly, and that was only after I got technical support to help me over some newbie hurdles to get it started in the first place. It ran OK for maybe a week and then it quit working. That same tecnical support hasn't responded to me since Jan 19 when they told me what my screen had was a "known problem" (meaning I and others had it). They also don't have a "known solution" or they would have called me with it.

The problem was it would not show new photos sent to it AND if you started it up to show any photos it already had it would soon go back to a setup screen and remain there until it automatically shut off. Then, when you next walked into the room it would wake up and be at that same broken "known problem" place.

I should say earlier in the year, last year, I tried my first Nixplay which also finished in a return. This one was returned because I was coming up on the deadline for returning to Amazon for credit, and I hadn't heard from Nixplay since that final contact. No follow-up whatsoever. I think Nixplay has the possibilities of being a good product, but I've now retuned two of them (months apart) because they are not yet ready for prime time. I wish them success, since Kodak quit on people there is a vacancy in the marketplace, but it appears Nixplay is trying to rush too fast to fill the vacancy left by Kodak. I've tried them twice now. I want one, but I want it to work flawlessley. In fact, aside from the problem I had that they knew about they were admitting to everybody that their frames wouldn't handle one of the most common (and long-standing) "lostless" file types at all, that was a future promise, another indicator they went to market without being ready. In the future I would try a third time, but I'm going to have to be able to look in a place like this and see an overwhelming absence of complaints with that kind of record sustained over a long period of time. I'm just not ready to be a guinea pig again, not at these prices..

I received my Nixplay 8 inch Wi-Fi Cloud Digital Display yesterday and spent about 2 hours in total reading the straight forward and simple instructions, logging onto the Nixplay web site, setting up my Nixplay frame to sync with my cloud of pictures and adjusting settings such as time and display brightness, color, etc. I found it quick, easy and enjoyable with many available ways to obtain photos such as cloud, USB flash drive, SD card, and so forth. I plan on giving a follow-up review after about a month of use.
I have used it about 2 weeks and still love it. My opinion is unchanged.

I recently purchased a Nixplay Edge 13 inch digital picture frame for my mother living in Italy (I am in the USA) so that I can share pictures of my newborn and our life more easily, and for her to enjoy them on a larger screen while she is at home. I needed something that was trivial to setup and that I could administer remotely to ensure there would be nothing stopping her from enjoying the picture frame.
I am always a bit reluctant to buy hardware that depends on “the cloud” because I prefer to have total control on locally on my device and I do not trust companies to keep supporting the device as long as I want to use the device. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the frame has a full menu of settings locally that one can use to override the settings set through the cloud. If the cloud support were ever to be removed, one can administer all its features locally therefore extending its life.

Creating an account on nixplay.com and linking the frame to it was very easy. This means one could likely purchase a frame for a less technically savvy family member and set it up for them remotely (the remote party will just have to use the remote/or buttons on the back, to link the frame to the wifi network, and finally to get to the serial number needed for pairing to the nixplay account). You, the more technically savvy one, can finish the setup and loading of pictures from anywhere in the world (assuming you have the pictures to load).

I can’t say I am thrilled with the web interface as I find myself going around in circles looking for what I need. It was really easy to setup friends so that my sister and I can easily email pictures of our families to the frame but I just cannot figure out how to have pictures sent by my mother be shown on the default playlist I set up. The easiest work around is for her to use a different email address from the one on the account set up as if it were a friend to send the pictures… doing this enables the automatic addition to the frame’s playlist (I only set one up). I truly think the website can be significantly improved however mostly it does what it needs.

The frame’s user interface is quite basic but after all you will not have to interact with it very much. The menu and text seems designed for a smaller screen and simply installed on the larger screen without any adjustments. This seems silly to me as it looks awkward, and will surely be harder to read for those with less than perfect eyesight.

The Android app it quite basic as well… I was hoping it would give you full control over the pictures and settings but I think most users can do without unless you want an easier way to load your own pictures from your cell to the frame. Hopefully future revisions of the app will have more functionality.

The hardware design of the frame looks pretty nice and well done. I would recommend they find a way to hide the IR sensor for the remote and the motion sensor as the two little squares on the bottom right do not add anything to the looks but that is just me. The bracket to hold the screen up is sturdy and can be slid into a thin slot to position the frame in portrait or landscape however I would not consider putting this frame in portrait position because the frame width is twice as wide where the sensors and logo are (on the bottom if in landscape). Had they not put the logo, and made the frame width equal on all four sides, the frame would look good in either orientation. Another frame I have from Sony has equal width sides and the logo can be switched off so if you put the frame in the portrait orientation, you can hide the now sideways logo by switching it off.

The full HD resolution of this screen makes it a pleasure to look at pictures, something that most frames fail at if you are picky like me (photography has been my hobby for 2 decades). I have not had a need to adjust viewing settings on this screen but looked for them anyhow and was surprised to only find “brightness” already set at max. This troubles me quite a bit but the pictures look good so it might not be too bad after all. The colours look right, and none of the pictures looked washed out or too dark. Of course it will not do miracles on bad pictures so the above comment applies to average pictures with no huge visual defect. Pictures taken with my Samsung S6 Edge look just awesome on this frame without any adjustments… even the ratio of the picture is perfect so landscape picture fit perfectly.

As other reviewers have posted, the slideshow settings are a bit minimal and nixplay should certainly beef them up. One reviewer had suggested to add a setting that would allow a scrolling picture to fully scroll before moving on to the next. The issue is that some pictures take longer than 10 or 15 seconds to fully scroll so they never fully show being too big. A fix here is to make those pictures smaller, prefer pictures in the same orientation as the frame, or use “fit to screen” as I did. You waste some screen real-estate (black bars) but you don’t have any scrolling issues.

This product has great potential and most of the things that I am not too fond of can be addressed by software updates so I am hopeful they will do so in the near future. I have seen many terrible off-brand screens so this one was a good surprise (I purchased it without seeing it in person) and after all I got it for my mother so the most critical aspect was enabling my less critical mother’s enjoyment.

I will likely purchase 2 or 3 more of these frames for our use at home and to give to other family members. Would be nice if the price were a bit lower though ;-) NOTE: I purchased my frame from another retailer as it was not in stock at Amazon just a few days ago andI needed it before my mother left to return to Italy.

EDIT: I purchased an additional frame but this time from Amazon during a lightning deal at $90 off!! It came with the most up-to-date firmware (unlike the one from an online store in NY) which saved me a few weeks in troubleshooting via email/phone with Nixplay (thanks for resolving the issue by the way!!!). All of what I wrote above still applies with frame #2 however they have added a few more customizations compared to what was available a month ago when I was setting up frame #1.

I have mixed feelings about this picture frame. It does some things very well. This includes the Cloud capabilities, image quality and build quality. However, I was hoping to put a large SD card into it with all of our family pictures. I expected that SD card pictures would automatically play along with Cloud images. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. You have to manually select and play SD card pictures. Then when you're done, you need to switch it to a Cloud playlist to be able to show pictures from the web. This part is tedious and not obvious (especially if you were hoping to give it to a non-techy relative).

The holy Grail of Digital Photo Frames!

Back when digital photography was at its infancy, I waited a long time to transitioning from film to digital. Not because I was technically un savvy but because the quality of digital images was just not there. That all changed when the Digital SLRs came onto the scene with 10+ Megapixel sensors and I never looked back to film. I have even transitioned my digital imagery from 3x2 to an aspect ration of 16:9 as I also work in digital Video and find this ratio works best for me in composing my pictures.

The same with Digital Photo frames. I waited some and even then was disappointed with low resolution, low quality, bad back lighting, lack of 16:9 aspect ratio, laborious USB/CF image management and of course over the top pricing.

FINALLY, a Photo Frame worth waiting for has EVEN GOT BETTER!!!.

I have a Nixplay 18.5" frame (review already posted) and was lucky to be one of the first to get the new EDGE High Resolution Frames.

The Nixplay 18.5" all singing and dancing digital photo frame that I purchased is great and adorns our family room but for me the 1366 x 768 pixels resolution was just not hi res enough. (Read my review under the Nixplay 18.5" listing)

These days I work in 4K video and 20+ Megapixel photography

Enter the Nixplay Edge technology with 1920x1080 higher resolution. The image quality is superb and the image is bright and alive. More than enough to make me happy (well for at least now)

It has everything you could want in a leading edge digital photo frame and connects to any mobile or computer living on the internet.

The 13.5" screen is sleek, thin and modern looking with full remote control. Great for desktop or sideboard mounting. I would like to see an 18" version of the Edge released as this is a perfect size to wall mount and is easily viewable from across the room.

The plug pack is international 110-240V BUT it comes with a fixed US 2 Pin power arrangement requiring you to buy a travel adapter for any other country and makes it a rather large power supply. I would like to see it come with a plug pack which has removable and changeable power pins to suit other countries, like for example that you get with Cisco/Linksys products.
