I had previously bought digital frames from another manufacturer for my parents and they were awful! They kept freezing and corrupting my SD cards so I decided to look for a better option for them. I hadn't considered WI-fi frames, but liked the description of the Nixplay Seed frame and purchased it. I am so glad I did! The display is bright and crisp, but the best parts are the many options you have via the Nixplay website. You can add up to 5 frames to one account and create different albums which can then be uploaded to Playlists. These playlists can then be "published" to one or all of your frames so you can really personalize what you want to display. I utilized these playlists to upload special birthday collages I created for my Mom's special day! I also like the colors the frame offers along with the fact that it works in both landscape and portrait mode. Lastly, the power cord design works well too.

You get 10GB of online storage per account which is plenty for me. You can also control various settings like transitions, sleep time, etc from their website as well.

There is an iPhone app that allows you to upload pictures to your playlists which I have used many times already. You can also connect social media platforms, but I have yet to try this.

I am beyond impressed with the frame quality and excellent customer service and would highly recommend this to anyone.

First of all, Caitlin of Nixplay is amazing and the reason I actually got this frame. She answered all my endless email questions the day of or first thing the next day. She was very clear and informative about the different frame options and capabilities. I've never had better customer service.

On to the frame. It is sleek, compact and very attractive. The packaging was also very sturdy and professional looking. It would make a great gift. I love that you have several options to upload a photo, send it directly from email to your new free nixplay email address which is connected to the frame, social media (Facebook, instagram, picaboo, dropbox, etc.) and directly from your computer by drag and drop. With all these options there is really no need for usb ports or sd cards. You can even add friends so they can send photos directly to the playlist that you assign them to. Great for families, especially grandparents. I quite like the power cord which doubles as the frame stand. Very unique and intuitive, easy to roll up and tuck behind things too. The motion detector is also great for saving electricity and looking cool when you enter the room with a guest. The picture quality is really clear, bright and vibrant. A noticeable upgrade from previous models and much better than other frames out there. I'm very happy with this wifi frame. Will probably get more as presents this christmas.

This is a great looking frame with a beautiful screen. I thought the 160 ppi screen sounded anemic at first, but in hand it looks great, and you're never gonna look at a frame closer than 12 inches anyways. Gotta remember that this was the same res the original 3.5 inch iPhone came in and that was good enough for quite a few years.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of issues with the design of this frame, which makes me believe it will probably be discontinued/ updated pretty soon. First of all, the remote works well and is quite responsive, however, it's a square shape and completely symmetrical. You will never know which way is up unless you glanced at it, which isn't a problem most of the time, but if you were to use this thing in the dark, well, good luck! You can probably put some tape on it so you can tell by touch which way is up, but it's just a ridiculous design choice that makes me wonder if they hired somebody from craigslist to do this.

On the software side, things work but are quite a bit buggy. There's no way to have the photo fit the frame perfectly, it's either panning constantly or scaled to fit the screen, which means black bars on the sides or top. A zoom to fit/ center option would be the best way to view the pictures, so I hope nix play adds this option later on.
Their website only works on a desktop, my samsung galaxy s6 and galaxy tab pro won't work with it, which is a shame, but no big deal. There's no way to reorder images once they're in a playlist. Well, you can drag and drop to reorder, but you can only do that one pic at a time, and the interface is so sluggish that it'll probably take an hour to move a dozen pics around (my iMac crashed TWICE in 20 minutes trying to view my playlist, so something weird is going on there).

The remote and software is just a minor issue though, compared to the elephant in the room: the one piece stand/ usb power cable that is its "selling point." Ugh. This thing is a disaster. The cable is like a rigid bungee cord that doesn't bend easily, like Indiana Jones/ whip sticking out of your picture frame. As a stand, it's pathetic, and the frame will topple over if you touch any part of it, and as a power cord, it's just an unmanageable mess. This frame is not wall mountable, so if you plan on putting it on a desk or nightstand, you better clear up a lot of space, because this cord is gonna need its own clearing since you can't just let it dangle off to the side like every other little cord out there that can just go over and around everything else conveniently. I don't know who's responsible for this design, but Nixplay is gonna need to get a new designer fast and come up with a new model before people start moving on to the next brand, quick!

Update: I purchased the Edge 13 inch to replace this. It's way overpriced, incredibly slow (it takes about 4 seconds to get to the next picture whereas the seed only takes 1 when you hit the next button in the remote), and the remote is terrible, requiring perfect line of sight in order to work, but it's widescreen and doesn't have the usb cable stand issue. It's a hard decision but I think I'll be keeping the sluggish edge over the seed just due to those 2 benefits alone.

So first of all, motion sensing is a fantastic feature, the display just turns off when there is no motion in the room. And no more sticking in any SD card/transferring photos to the cards, everything is wifi, Just love the way i can access all my pics from facebook/google plus and make it display it on the frame. And here is the cool part, you can send pictures from the app on your phone to the frame. So say you have this display given as a gift to your parents/grand parents in some other parts of the world connected to the internet (make sure you pair the frame with your phone), you can just post the pictures you take on your phone or other processed images from your cameras anytime and they would just enjoy seeing all your happenings ( best thing to do if parents/grand parents are not a tech savvy) . And of course it comes with a remote to scroll over the pictures or for other settings :)

This is one of the best devices for sharing photos with loved ones. Our mother lives across the state and we share our family adventures almost daily. The upload is easy on a smart phone or computer. With remote settings we control all the functions, our mother, who is 94, doesn't need to learn any new skills or touch the device. She loves it too.

I have to admit that I was not expecting the frame to be as good as it really is.

First, the display is nice and crisp. The pictures look really sharp and very well defined with no pixelization. The amount of options to setup the the frame are a lot, so you can do many different things. I am not sure how useful the remote will be as you can configure the frame from the Internet. The stand is the cable itself and it works great. The frame does not look cheap or cheaply made. It connects to the Internet for all the pictures, but seems to store them locally, so if there is an outage it will still work. One big feature is the ability to put the frame to sleep at night, and another is that it will shut itself off until it detects movement. When it turns on you can set it to cycle through newer pictures first. One thing I did not like was the speed and motion of the panning motion when some pictures that do not fit the frame are shown and I think they should be configurable.

The Internet service is FREE as long as you don't need more than 10GB, which is more than adequate for most people you will gift this. Just delete pictures from the service before it gets full. You can give permission to other people to send pictures via email or the app, which is nice as it displays a nice greeting with the name of the person that sent a picture.

I bought this for my mother and I set it up before sending it to her to make it easier (just plug and play). After using it for a bit I definitely need to buy one or two or three for myself.

We were in the market to get a few frames for our home and offices. A few things we were looking for in digital frames were as follows.

1) Display, IPS preferred
What's the point of having a frame if the content looks horrible? minimum of XGA resolution on up to 15" frame. Of course the frame has to be attractive.

2) 4:3 aspect ratio
Most of our photos are in 4:3 ratio. I can live with some pre-cropped photos with black bars, but I wouldn't be happy with majority of photos displaying with bars. Yes, there is the 'fill frame' option, but I wouldn't want photos to be cut off by the frame.

3) Motion sensor
The life of the backlight on these screens will be significantly extended with a motion sensor. NixPlay motion sensor works very well and instantly turn on as you walk by. You can configure the motion timeout in combination with the preset schedule. I expect the screen to last a long time considering the frame is really on for a few hours a day on our current setting. (10 minutes timeout with 11P-6A off schedule)

4) Web Interface
Before purchasing these frames, I looked at another popular company's products. I signed up for free cloud accounts for both companies and compared the web interface as well as the mobile app. Mobile apps are pretty basic for both, but NixPlay had much nicer/advanced web interface. This was a major item for me.

5) SD card or USB ports preferred
I hope NixPlay stays for a long run, because the cloud service works well, and it really is convenient. However, I would also like to know that if this cloud service goes away someday, I will still be able to use these frames. I believe it currently requires the first time setup via WiFi though.

With above considerations, we purchased the following frames.
1) Seed 8" - These are attractive frames and the screen is great. But...due to the lack of SD card/USB port option, we might return this. It also lacked contrast adjustment. It has the integrated stand/power cable option which is clever and functional, I still prefer the regular stand.

2) Edge 8" - We love this frame. I think this is the best one that NixPlay offers at 8". Meets every item listed above. IPS display, motion sensor, XGA resolution @ 8" looks GREAT, and has SD card/USB ports.

3) NixPlay Original 15" - It does not have the IPS display, but as a wall-mounted frame, photos look fine at a normal distance. Display is bright and has contrast adjustments.

Being an IT professional for over 20 years I definitely appreciate well-engineered products. I believe these frames and the cloud service are well-thought-out. WiFi pairing worked as expected, and pairing with the online account worked flawlessly. Web interface is modern, and offers decent set of features. Nothing good or bad - these frames seem to run on a modified Android OS. Remotes can be finicky, but we rarely used it. Larger frames seem to have a space for storing the remote, which I thought was a nice feature.

Wishlist
1) Local storage option. Designing for simplicity and for majority of customers work well on these types of products, I get that...However, many people now have NAS at home with terabytes of space. DLNA? Adding an option to allow SMB or NFS share access would make these frames really useful. If they had this option, I would have no problems with frames lacking SD card or USB ports. Android already has these features built in, so it shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

2) More cloud storage? Perhaps if they increase cloud space for 10GB PER FRAME, not per account, there might be incentives for people to buy additional frames. I would.. Without resizing, high quality JPEG photos from 16MP camera would fill up 10GB at roughly at 2000 photos. mark.

Here's the thing. If you want a super simple way to see your digital photos I definitely recommend this frame.
I think the real star of the show is the software. Their web-based setup makes it's super simple to get photos from your phone (or Dropbox, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to the frame.
I haven't really had any issue with the cable/stand, or the software. I dig it.

I had no idea what to expect. We use it vertically, as most of the photos my wife takes are that way - so it's good. The cord is long, which works for us. The rigidity of it for the stand works great as well (I was prepared to pick up a little wooden photo/plate stand if it didn't work).
I was nervous spending the money on something that doesn't have any card slots or USB ports, but after a quick frame registration (you have to use the website, not the APP to pair the frame to the account) - we were adding ourselves as friends, emailing photos to the frame and scooting them over via the app. I'm tempted to pick up two more for the grandparents. Another VERY cool feature is the 'motion detection' -- if after 10 minutes (or whatever you select), nobody is moving around, go to sleep. It starts right up as soon as there's movement so you don't miss anything. I hope this will allow for better longevity.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems to me the ideal target market for this product is the technologically-impaired parents or grandparents of internet-savvy consumers, right?. (Or, probably more accurately, I'm willing to bet that MOST people who buy these frames are the internet-savvy types who buy this for their parent or grandparents so they can easily share pictures from their phones with their technophobic relatives.)

Once you get it all setup, this frame works great -- the frame is attractive, the pictures look nice, and it's totally configurable from the website. Very cool and convenient. I bought two of these and set them up for my parents and for my mother-in-law over Christmas, and have used the android app to send them plenty of grandkid pictures since then.

The original "Out of the box" experience, however, was an *awful* experience for one single reason; even though their most-likely end-users are internet-clueless adults, the developers inexplicably decided to leave out WPS support from their WiFi setup, requiring the user to enter their SSID and password manually. Well, guess what? Neither my parents nor my mother-in-law knew their wifi passwords! And I bet most people in this frame's target audience are in the same boat!

My parents at least had it written down somewhere, and were able to produce it after half an hour. My mother-in-law, bless her heart, didn't even know she *had* WiFi (enabled by default on her router when the technician installed it alongside her cable modem.) So, what *should* have been a simple two-minute setup turned into a **90-minute-long** fiasco where I eventually had to Google for the manual for her WiFi router and reset it back to its default config just so I could log in and set a new SSID and password. Which, of course, then required re-connecting her computer, and her roommate's tablet to the new WiFi setup, in addition to setting up the Nixplay frame itself.

At first, when I couldn't find a WPS button, I assumed it was just hidden somewhere in the menus, but when I called Nixplay support to ask about it, they confirmed that the seed frame does not have WPS support -- supposedly 'for security reasons' -- which is totally stupid; this is not banking software, it's a picture frame; what are they protecting against? Some neighbor's kid breaking in and re-connecting the frame to the neighbor's WiFi?

Omitting WPS on a product like this is just dumb, and shows a complete lack of thought about who their audience is and what features they actually need. I admit I haven't tried any of the competitors; it may be they are all equally stupid. But the next time I look at gifting a picture frame like this, I will definitely try some other brand of frame first.

Thinking it through: if the frame had a hardware WPS button, the default install could be as simple as two button pushes (push the button on your router, then push the button on your frame, then follow instructions on the screen to register the frame via your laptop. THAT would be the ideal OOB experience.
